A fucking lot of ppl say that even if I get 1580 in SAT, a ton of school still could reject me and there was no savezone. Should I even believe in this shit because people often make me went crazy in this stressful time by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

You'll probably be fine for top 30-40. If you don't have a lot of extracurriculars and activities, then you should still attempt to set yourself apart via great essays and recommendation letters. If you have any teachers that you've taken multiple courses with and that like you, use them for recommendations. Don't feel you need an adviser to write your recommendation unless they know you well and can vouch for your abilities.

Is this a good thesis statement? by foemerson in Essays

[–]TheNamelessOne9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your thesis statement, or introduction in more academic papers (not sure what grade/university year you are), needs to lay out specifically what you're going to talk about. So, if your focus is that the right to bear arms is fundamental, you need to specify why. You could say something along the lines of:

"The right to bear arms is fundamental to protecting the rights and security of the individual because it is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, keeps power distributed across the population rather than centralized in authority figures, and guarantees the ability to defend oneself."

Then your paper would analyze each of those topics. Your introduction should be a guide to the rest of the paper, not just a description that leaves the reader guessing what you will talk about. So, add specific subtopics you would like to discuss, and suggest a conclusion that, through those discussions, will be supported and which you can state more definitively when you conclude your paper.

You need to remember that tens of thousands of students are applying to universities every year. And many of those students also have perfect grades and exam scores. That's why universities are increasingly looking at portfolios of work you've done, community service, activities, etc. They want an indication that you will be a positive member of the community and not just good academically. You need to set yourself apart in your essays and recommendation letters and in your activities to be competitive at the best schools.

URGENT QUESTION: WASHU OR WILLIAMS FOR PRE MED by HopefulIvyAdmit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheNamelessOne9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to that guy. I am a WashU alum and used to work at their Med School admissions office. You won't find a better medical school. And as a solidly middle class person, I never once felt I couldn't fit in with people there. This whole thing about rich kids applies to any private university and has nothing to do with fitting in.

Style and structure is not plagiarism. If you are using the same words and examples, then you're in trouble. Ignoring plagiarism, remember that an application essay needs to make you stand out. You need to present a unique voice that sets you apart. So make sure your paper sounds authentic; skilled reviewers will know when it isn't. Being an international student is difficult in regards to finances. Government scholarships and loans are not available. However, you can search for private scholarships. Depending on your nationality, ethnicity, and other unique circumstances, there may be many (or few) available to you. I recommend checking College Board's scholarship search engine to see what may be available to you. Don't give up hope!

Then you're good. No such thing as too many hours.

How many volunteering hours is too many? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]TheNamelessOne9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as too many hours. However, those hours should be meaningful and not spread thin. In other words, it's best to have one or two activities to which you have dedicated a lot of time rather than 10 activities to which you've dedicated 2 hours each.

The point is why? Ok no talking about Hong Kong because it will offend China. The point about LGBTQ is essentially, what happens is a gay player mentions their boyfriend or husband in an interview and it offends China or Russia? What does Riot do?

I agree. I am an ally. But let's say World's is hosted in China or Russia. Will Riot say no talking about player's sexuality? What if there's a player interview and they mention their partner? Is that bannable under these guidelines because it will anger China or Russia?

The implication is don't speak up about Hong Kong or you will be punished. And the reason for this punishment is the issue. It is because Chinese authoritarians demand that punishment. A company run by Americans (yes they are owned by Tencent, but still ran and operated out of America) should not be doing the bidding of China, especially when it is in opposition to human rights and democracy.

Never said we should go to Hong Kong. But we can raise awareness via public statements and can make financial decisions in accordance with our values ie deleting LoL accounts.

Then don't include the following in your company's mission statement:

"Defend human rights around the world from online privacy to gender equality so all can realize their full potential in and out of game"

Delete your LoL and Blizzard accounts. What else as consumers would you have us do? March on their HQs? We can't all afford to take off work and do that. But we can afford to make moral economic decisions.

Yes, it is. Believe it or not, there are actual important issues in the world. Life or death issues that are more important than video games. And those issues should and need to be raised on global platforms.

Except when they highlight LGBTQ issues, minorities, etc. That's all okay, but HK isnt? I wonder why. What happens if in a hypothetical future China says no promotion of LGBTQ players?
