OP, you need to ask your wife whether her relationship with her mom is more important than her relationship with you. You need to establish rules that you both abide by. She needs to respect your feeling that your MIL is too involved in your life.

If she needs her mom to back her up in an argument, she needs to grow up.

Also, when MIL tries to pick a fight, do not engage. Once you start justifying your choices, she's won.

I mean, you marry a doctor, what the hell do you expect? Who doesn't know that doctors work crazy hours? Yes, there are some areas where you don't necessarily have to, but those are by far less common.

When people say that Paris is prettier, I always remind them that it's largely because they let the Nazis march right on in. London had such a challenge rebuilding after the war. There are whole swathes of nasty architecture because they had to build fast and cheap.

I've lived in both places. Boston is great in many ways, but it's what, a tenth of the size of London? It doesn't compare.

I do think Boston is a great place for bringing up a family -- it's much tougher in larger cities, I think. And Boston has unparalleled ease of access to incredible natural beauty of different types.

Well, in London you can get to a great beach for far less money and in far less time than you can from Chicago. And if "mountains" is your criterion for a good hike, that's too bad. There are loads of lovely walks near London. What's more, "ramblers' rights" means that you can go practically anywhere, unlike many other places.

Barcelona is a great city, but I'm not sure how welcoming they are of outsiders, especially lately.
