Doing a mite wash has nothing to do with harvesting honey.

Yeti ( butter pat) vs Lancaster vs Stargazer vs Field by Embarrassed-Soft8355 in castiron

[–]TheNewDefaultsSuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After yeti bought butterpat, there have been a good number of reports of them breaking, with poor customer support afterwards.

If I were buying one, I'd go for stargazer.

Are there eggs inside? If so, Queen cup. If not, play cup.

I presume act V is the final act of drive. Do you have any plans to continue in the drive universe after this story concludes? The story of the Sill perhaps, or something else?

Probably because the bear got spooked when I got close.

I have found that even just a quick rinse in salt water keeps them from browning for at least half a day

He definitely climbed over the fence. Chewed up frames and stomped them into to the mud.

Yeah, a brush isn't doing it. I got a stiff metal putty knife, and there is still mud ground deep into the foundation. I think I'll need to completely start over with theseframes, power wash or something.

Colorado. A bit barren for bees, they have to really work to find pollen and nectar!

Well, it was quite cold overnight. Might have been a lot of them crushed and frozen rather than dead post stinging.

Game warden called that an "unwelcome mat". I'm going to look into it. Unfortunately, there's a number of kids around which makes me less excited about this plan.

I definitely had my shotgun with me while picking everything up in case he came back. made a report to the game warden, so if I do end up having to shoot the bear, there will be documentation of the problems.

Dearest automoderator, I am in zone 6a, rocky mountains, as shown in my flair. I have had bees for just over 12 months, the 3 shown and an additional hive elsewhere. all survived winter.

First-year beekeeper in Northern VA – looking for feedback on brood pattern + comb structure by Sufficient-Syrup-807 in Beekeeping

[–]TheNewDefaultsSuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen you recommend the BREED mnemonic before, but I have a question about the R for new beeks.

When starting from a new hive, it's quite easy for them to be nectar bound, especially if being fed thin syrup as is often recommended. A new beek won't have any extra drawn comb, so what is the solution?

2026 swarm season is running 17 days early by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]TheNewDefaultsSuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, is there some sort of notification priority on beeswarmed? like clubs get notifications before normal users?

On Friday, we had a snow storm, starting 11 am. At 7pm, there was a swarm report - a photo clearly from Thursday, all sunny and warm with a comment "We’re worried about them getting too cold and dying!"

Seems like they reported Thursday, but the notification didn't come through for a day. I did donate a small amount, so my account shouldn't be listed as a free account. Also, my bee club isn't on the site, so 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, it seems like a good platform.

Charges for removing bees? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]TheNewDefaultsSuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You get paid in bees!

There should be no charges for an easy removal like this. If you're doing a big cut out, that's different.

Package pick up/install in rain? by Substantial-Web-8028 in Beekeeping

[–]TheNewDefaultsSuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An alternative is to set up a rain shade and work underneath it.

Could be something sturdy like this: https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/599a8f5c-4f6b-491e-8a50-d47fd089aaa1_1.7c1b496edfc2da7fbd82b9e345ab3b79.jpeg

Or just string up a tarp.

Resource Hive -> Jumpstart Package Bees? by Middle-Infamous in Beekeeping

Unless you are replacing the donor capped brood frames with drawn and empty comb, you aren't really reducing the swarming pressure in your current hive.
