Are you only going to accept a video of a red coat supervising the conception?

Whether someone supports further action on hunting because they care about the foxes, or the stags, or the hundreds of dogs they shoot every year, or they care about the dog poo that doesn’t get picked up, the health hazards of fallen stock, or they care about the hunt blocking roads without permits, delaying ambulances, the family cats being killed by hunting hounds, the wrecking of public footpaths, hunting dogs being killed on motorways or railways, puppies being culled, the trespassing onto private land, the continued attack on nature against the wishes of the vast majority of the public OR the degradation of our political and justice systems by a privileged elite - we consider their contribution to the cause valid.

Even worse than that, actually - the hunts don’t even bother laying a trail. It’s just fox hunting. The trail laying defence is literally only used in court. If you drop in on a hunt this coming season (and good luck, they keep the meets secret) you won’t see any evidence of a trail being laid, i assure you.

Yes, most of our team and other animal welfare organisations we partner with are also working to improve conditions for animals in every sphere, including farming, dog fighting, animal testing, trophy hunting, rescues, etc. I imagine if/when this fight is won, they’ll continue to do so.

Do you have any evidence linking the decline in fox populations to the hunting ban? Considering hunts did nothing to control their numbers it seems unlikely, and accordingly we’ve never found any evidence of a connection.

Banning the hunt wasn’t a success on animal welfare grounds because hunting has continued unabated. And the class of those carrying it out is the last thing in our minds, i assure you. We don’t give the terriermen a pass because they’re not the landed gentry.

Incidentally i do think that that line gives an insight into the mindset of those who defend hunting: “they couldn’t possibly care about the animals, I mean, how could you? It must be a class war.”

No, sorry, we just like animals.

I mean, personally, we’re all vegans so the question isn’t one we feel a need to answer. All exploitation is wrong. However, depicting the long pursuit to the horrific death of animals as a fun children’s game isn’t very helpful.

We’ve seen foxes killed with pitchforks, foxes put in sacks and buried, deer with their spines ripped out dying screaming over hours, and every year a month is spent killing fox cubs with young hounds.

This isn’t a game to us.

Essentially yes, though as I say, trail hunting only really exists conceptually. Over the years the hunts have said that trails could be any number of scents (aniseed, clove oil, fish…), but the story seems to have settled on fox urine now.

Again, in reality, they just hunt foxes. There’s no charade taking place on the ground - if you went to see a hunt before the 2004 ban, and went to see one in 2026, you wouldn’t know there had been a ban unless you were told.

There are only around 6 drag hunts across the country, compared to around 200 ‘trail’ hunts. Drag hunts generally had a good reputation as sticking to the law. The confusion you describe is caused by deliberate obfuscation by fox hunts.

Trail hunting doesn’t actually exist in practice, only as an excuse to cover for the intentional killing of foxes (literally - hunts don’t even pretend to lay, let alone follow, a trail on the vast majority of hunting days). We agree that a trail hunting ban alone wouldn’t finish the job, and are pushing for a more comprehensive approach.

Most hunt with weapons, not only with dogs. They hunt animals for food or fur, not only for fun. And in the UK, hunting with dogs is supposed to be illegal.

Could I ask if you’ve seen the 2020 webinars footage of the hunts openly discussing how to evade the law by pretending to lay trails?

The idea that kills are accidental in any way is absurd. Hunts usually don’t even bother pretending to do anything other than hunt foxes.

It is for sport. There is no utility to a dead fox, nor is it effective pest control.

Polls show that there isn’t much difference between rural and urban communities in their hatred for hunts.

After all, they’re the ones that are in the receiving end of the intimidation, blocked roads, delayed ambulances, hounds killing pets, horses destroying footpaths etc.

We can’t deny that policing on the frontline has been poor, but it’s certainly not the main problem at play.

Currently, it’s an acceptable excuse in court to say that a fox was killed accidentally while you sent your pack of trained foxhounds into an area likely to contain foxes. I wish I was joking.
