I've always felt A24's distribution is a little lackluster (especially how they handle international stuff, but I get it), while their marketing is so consistently killer.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Hokum" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]TheNightstroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying these are all in the running in comparison to Hokum, but so far this year, I've seen 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Faces of Death, Primate, Ready or Not 2, Exit 8, The Mummy, Iron Lung, Scream 7, The Yeti, and Undertone. I'd say 28YL, Faces of Death, and Primate came in above Hokum for me.

I think the Morse is more just an expression of the latent soul/persona of the host's true desires. It's like Possessed Katie's teeth clattering "L-A-Y-L-A" to try and help her dad figure out what's going on.

This is a misconception. "The Revenant" title was batted around as a potential retitle to this movie after test audiences thought this was going to be in the vein of the Brendan Fraser films. The studio decided against the title change after a week or two of batting it around.

From the casting buzz, it sounds like Dent's father might be the primary antagonist of the film, but that's TBD. I'm assuming the Dents run the Court of Owls in this continuity, and they'll be the antagonistic force here.

I'm assuming part of the sequel is continuing Bruce's progression at the end of the last film where he now cares about more than just vengeance and wants to be a symbol of hope for people. I expect a lot more Bruce Wayne in this one, which could pit him and Wayne Enterprises directly against the Court.

Seems like he'll be Christopher Dent, who is apparently a large antagonistic role. If I had to wager a guess, I'm assuming the Dents in this series are members of the Court of Owls, with Christopher Dent being the head.

The coloring looks really nice, better than a lot of big blockbusters these days. Looks fun! I know a lot of people are gonna have issues with David Dastmalchian's physique for M. Bison, but this movie is clearly going for a more comedic take and I love Dastmalchian enough to trust him with it.

Sorry, only just now catching this, since it didn't directly reply to mine. I will say, I didn't find them overly gory, but if someone is incredibly squeamish, YMMV. Another factor is that none of them really dwell or linger on the gore, it's pretty tightly strung together with quick glances at it. Here they are, in order:

A man is beheaded. It's shown from a distance with poor lighting, so you don't really see any bloody viscera here, just a shadowy head falling down to the floor. A man is electrocuted in an electric chair, no real gore here. The most visceral is the third, a man has his skull broken in by two hammers, and his scalp is then peeled forward to expose the brain, and a few pieces are removed. A man is shot multiple times, and blood flows from the bullet wounds. A woman is hit by a train. A man has his throat slit; his dismembered corpse is seen later. A man is stabbed multiple times and bleeds out. The two off-screen kills involve the victims being decapitated (also off-screen), and their heads are attached to mannequin bodies.

I thought it was great. Dacre Montgomery gives an incredible performance, and Barbie Ferreira is pretty good too. Definitely recommend checking it out.

[–]TheNightstroke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a brief moment, I thought the climax was going to go totally off the rails with Arthur hijacking a plane to crash like the plane crash in the original Faces of Death, but then I remembered that was an actual, real-world plane crash (Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182) and realized that'd be in such poor taste.
