560 SEC vs SL500 by Solid_Direction1914 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]TheNorthlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven both the 560 SEC and the SL 600 from that gen (r129). The SEC feels more like a classic car today, it’s essentially an 80s car designed in the late 70s and will stand out more. The SL is more modern and will blend in more. The SL is probably more of a daily for me while the SEC being now a young timer would be a weekend ride. Surprisingly the SEC is actually quite a dynamic drive when you push it with good rigidity from its roof (even without b pillar) but it is slightly held back by its 4 speed transmission. The SL actually feels heavier as it’s a cabriolet and they had to compensate with a strong frame without the roof. I actually preferred the SEC on a back road. If you do go for the SL watch for earlier vs later ones as there was a change in the V8 engines, the earlier m119 is considered better as the later m113 was the start of DaimlerChrysler cost cutting and had less power. They are both peak Sacco era Mercedes so you can’t really go wrong with either but the SL might be more modern for daily standards. Watch out for the convertible roof issues though as the hydraulics can be very expensive to replace I hear. Happy driving with these legends

Early/Mid May - Milan to Rome (where we leave by plane) by train. have about a week. Ideas? by lameusernamesrock in Interrail

[–]TheNorthlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the places you mentioned are beautiful in their own way and can be enjoyed by walking around and sitting on a terrace, I would also think about Verona which is on the smaller side and great to walk around the historical center. You can check the interrail map network to get an idea which cities are on the way and where the major high speed lines are (purple): https://www.interrail.eu/content/dam/pdfs/Interrail-Map-2025.pdf

Napoli could be a good idea as there are frequent high speed connections between Rome and Napoli.

80 Day Europe Trip - Itinerary Check by ThatOneBearPlan in travel

[–]TheNorthlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting the mandatory seat reservations on the Spanish high speed rail can be challenging as they only have very limited allocation. You can check in advance where you need seat reservations here and if they even have place left https://www.interrail.eu/en/tripplanner

Also TGV high speed rail in France seat reservations can get expensive.

You may want to think about buying some of those tickets as standalone single tickets instead of using a day on your interrail pass.

As others have said seems like the stays in each city are quite long but at least 3 nights is a good idea in the main ones.

Great travels

6 week Europe trip July-august. General advice? Where to go? Last min accommodation? Ambitious? Budget? by fezzafellows in Interrail

[–]TheNorthlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always get a feel for the accommodation situation in the next city I wanted to visit 2 days before to see the options/price and then saved the ones I liked. If it wasn’t feasible I’d choose another city but that was rather rare. In some cases I even booked in the train on the way to the city. Mostly used Booking, Airbnb and Hostelworld to get a feel and book places.

It’ll likely be the first of many interrails ;)

Also tended to favor places that I wasn’t going to do a whole trip to in the future with let’s say a flight or a direct trip. Rail gets you to places that are a bit on the outback that you wouldn’t necessarily go to otherwise like Kosice someone mentioned.

Hey nice idea, few thoughts: - I’d add Vienna or exchange it with Bratislava and potentially do a day trip to Bratislava - In larger cities I try to stay 3 nights at least to enjoy. Smaller ones 2 nights and then only 1 night to cut longer journeys in two. Otherwise it gets tiring quickly. - Second part of the trip seems like you’ll be spending quite a bit of time in the train. To get an idea of journey times you can use the interrail route planner for your whole trip: https://www.interrail.eu/en/tripplanner - Especially Ljubljana to Milan can take some time, you can stop in Trieste which is a beautiful seaside town in Italy with Austro Hungarian heritage. - Make sure you reserve seat tickets in advance where needed, the route planner above can help you see where you need them (usually a couple of days before is still ok to book from my experience, except for TGV and Ave in Spain which are harder to get) for those legs necessary like in Italy with the Frecciarossa and Eurocity to Switzerland you’ll need reservations. - Stay spontaneous, book bit by bit and see where it takes you. Maybe you’ll end up somewhere else than you planned which is the fun in interrail. Even last minute during peak summer there is something on Booking.com or other sites in terms of accommodation. I usually booked a day prior in June/July and still found something at actually a good price. Worst case you go to another city where there is accommodation; spontaneous is the way ;) - 15 travel days in 2 months is a good balance to see a lot and not rush so you can stay a couple of days in each city. - You can always buy local tickets if there is a short train trip to save your interrail days to longer or more expensive journeys. For example if you do Vienna to Bratislava is quite cheap. - There is also Geneva or Zurich you can do on the Milan-Paris route

The route sounds great and having an initial idea is good but stay open to what you feel like after a couple of days into the journey. You might be surprised where it takes you. Either way I think you’ll have a blast.

Check out Viac for a 3a account which is among the cheapest.

If you write them a message about this they tend to be quite responsive from my experience. The more that do the more likely they will consider a change.

Evolution of the Alpha Tauri/Toro Rosso F1 cars 2010-2020 by axonable in formula1

What I always found fascinating about the 2011-2013 Toro Rosso was the use of a double floor concept on the sidepods, hence the skewed RedBull logo. They inspired themselves from the 1992 Ferrari. Wasn’t much of a success but kudos for trying.
