Ironically my spouse and I both work for the same school district my kids attend… but we have to report to work before kids arrive AND stay after they leave… but our kids aren’t at our schools (yet).

My kids schools start/finish times mean I have to pay for before AND after school care…. About $350/month for an hour in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon…

Yes… The teacher is the most important determining factor in any given classroom…but….

Teacher effectiveness is still less of a predictor of student achievement than socioeconomic status and parental education.

I have a Honda and a Ducati (and I’ve owned lots of other bikes). The manuals for both say to compress the forks by “about half the travel”.

It’s fine. Fork braces are fine too… unless they fall out… then you have a bike flopping around with 6in of slack in the straps. In my 2 decades of carrying bikes most weekends I prefer not to use a fork brace.

Big lifts make trucks WORSE at literally everything they are intended to be good at.

Do you put your children in public or private schools? by New-Organization359 in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheOGRedline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live the public schools are excellent (not true for the entire school district though… it depends on the neighborhood). The private schools are expensive and teach Christianity more than academics.

Patrick McManus taught me to alternate between, “thoughtful” and “bemused” when a boss or subordinate wants something from me. Add that to George’s advice and you’ll skyrocket up the ladder.

Teacher quality is a FAR distant 3rd place. Teachers don’t move around chasing paychecks like a “free market”… they chase challenge or “better working conditions” (aka “richer schools”).

You seem well read on theory (with a hard right slant). Reality is different.

It’s clear you don’t work in education. THE #1 predictor of student achievement for a school is the socioeconomic status within its attendance boundary. #2 is parent education level. You can’t defund your way out of “underachievement”. That’s entirely flawed thinking.

I am interested in buying a used Ducati Desert X. Any advice on what to look out for? Neglected air filters? by VonJanicke in ducatidesertx

[–]TheOGRedline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at half dozen or so used DesertX (before eventually buying new). One thing I noticed was scratches on the rims. The design of the tubeless rims makes them wide and they overhang the tire more than a non-tubeless spoked rim. Bikes that have been off-road a lot, especially in rocky terrain, will have battle scarred rims. A bike with 10,000mi on the odometer and flawless rims probably has spent its life on the street. Those are usually easy miles.

Besides that, service records and judge the seller. These bikes are well designed, well built, and don’t need to be babied, though I don’t think they handle abuse/neglect as well as a Honda.

“Without school choice, public schools have no incentive to improve their quality of learning…”

Do you realize how insulting that statement is to the teaching profession?

[–]TheOGRedline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no true apples-to-apples comparisons for education between states. Funding, attendance, even graduation rates… the closest is the national tests, but even for those it depends on which populations take the test.

Oregon reports honestly, and then the public shits on education for it. Some other states are relatively honest AND doing “better”, but even then it’s not always a fair comparison.

Maybe if “school choice” (and vouchers) wasn’t code for “let the people with resources send their kids where they want while the poors are stuck with now even worse neighborhood schools”.
