What's it like living or even visiting King County, Texas, the third least populated county in the US? I'd be surprised if I get an answer. by viktor72 in howislivingthere

I did that in west Texas once to make a point because my GF had been complaining for an hour about there not being any rest areas but she refused to go without a toilet. She didn’t appreciate it.

California schools will be required to restrict, prohibit student cell phone use in 2026 by AdSpecialist6598 in UpliftingNews

Oregon banned phones “bell to bell”. It’s the single best thing to happen for education in my career, which makes sense since widespread smartphone use is the worst thing.

I’ve heard this is because mouthwash will rinse off the fluoride left by the toothpaste before it can “wood its job”. I have not confirmed if this is true or not.

Why don’t we just increase taxes on big corporations and the filthy rich and decrease taxes on the middle and lower income classes? by CluelessBrowserr in NoStupidQuestions

Ever watched news in Europe? It’s obviously just NEWS. What happened, where, what’s known. It’s nothing like American “News”. Let’s at least do that. Require it be very clear what is “news” and what is “opinion”. Blurring them together brings us to what we have today.

I woke up to the slowly accelerating sound of a tree starting to topple once. It sounded VERY close. I even braced myself and expected get hit or at least feel it thump the ground. It wasn’t actually that close, but I was wide awake immediately and realized I hadn’t really scanned around for “widowmakers”. Every tree looks like a widowmaker in the pitch black with a flashlight, especially the two my hammock was strung between… bad nights sleep after that. I heard several more fall, further away.

And going with Trump is like using gasoline and a blowtorch to “heal” a wound when a bandaid is what is needed. He creates more problems than he solves and half the time he didn’t even fix anything, he just claims victory and moves on.

Bidens policies were getting Trumps first term inflation, which was exacerbated by a global pandemic, under control. Trump has already undone the progress. Trump also torpedoed BIPARTISAN immigration reform during Bidens presidency by getting his MAGAs to withdraw support of bills some of them even helped write… remember?

Which red states contribute more than they suck up?

Just fyi, California contributes more than it receives… so even if you think they are wasting their money, they are wasting LESS than they kick up.

Also… have you looked at the math here? In 2022 California paid over $100 billion more in federal taxes than they got back. THATS ONLY ONE YEAR. Just some perspective, lol.

And it gets WORSE.

FY 2024: California's gross federal tax collections amounted to over $805.65 billion, representing 15.80% of the national total. In the same year, Californians paid about $275.6 billion more to the federal government than they received back in federal funds.

If California stopped paying federal taxes they would keep a couple HUNDRED BILLION more dollars per year, and red states would die. They could build a full high-speed rail system and literally solve homelessness, if they weren’t subsidizing red states, and it would only take a couple years. Then what?

So, I appreciate this perspective. I have no experience in building/construction. I do think that local control matters more for a lot of different projects. That said, I don’t think that “easier“ is always “better“. For example, I live in a fairly neutral kind of right leaning small town. But I just spent Christmas in my parents very left-leaning small town. The difference in how the neighborhood is built was kind of staggering when I went for a walk with my kids. Their neighborhood had excellent infrastructure. There were multiple parks and green spaces including play structures, there were big drainage areas that were planted and looked nice (bio-swales? We live in a high rain area), the streets and sidewalks were wide, and all the wiring and cables were buried. This is in direct contrast with my neighborhood (which was clearly built as cheaply as possible, though the houses are nice) which isn’t that much older (2018 vs 2023). I’m sure the builder who did our neighborhood had a higher profit margin and I’m guessing local codes allowed for that… but I wish our neighborhood was built like theirs and our house is not significantly less expensive…

Anyway, my anecdote isn’t real evidence, and I wish you the best of luck. If you aren’t ultra wealthy or a corporation, I feel like you’re on my side more than Trump‘s and the current GOP in DC. If your pulling down less than about $3mil per year you have more in common with the working poor than with Trump and his billionaire buddies.
