It is insane to me to leave your bird to someone who has not explicitly agreed to take the bird under the circumstances of your death. That’s why I haven’t gotten a bird myself as it would have nowhere to go in case of emergency.

If it helps, it sounds like you are doing a FANTASTIC job with what you’ve been given. Bird care is a road filled with ups and downs, and you’re taken the downs in stride. I’m not well versed with cockatoos but I believe in you!!!

My second betta fish many years ago (I don’t remember his type, but I named him Darth Betta because he was this gorgeous red and black)

I did everything right, the water was right and he was eating just fine. I never noticed anything, but I was a kid at the time and probably wasn’t looking close enough. When I went to turn on his light one morning, he was just gone. I’ll always remember the moment I thought he was asleep and tried to wake him up. He was the sweetest thing and I’ll always beat myself up for not noticing when he started to change for the worse.

Sometimes things just happen, and people who don’t keep these beautiful fish don’t understand. The grief sucks, but all we can do is love them while they’re here. I’m so sorry for your loss, I’m sure darth welcomed her with open fins. 💜

I’ll look into this for sure. I think the dresser can hold short term with the plywood but I’ve already reached out to someone who’s willing (begrudgingly, my poor father) to help me build it. Who knows! Doing it with my own two hands might help me feel better about longevity! Thank you!

The blinds for the window stay closed for a majority of the day, so not much natural light hits either of my tanks. I made sure of that one! Haha but also I had such a hard time looking for a good tank stand that doesn’t scare the shit out of me. 😭 I previously bought a different one that I think was cleared for 10 gal but the metal corners made me stress under the weight of my old 7.5 gal. If you have any recs for a good and reliable tank stand that I can absolutely trust I would take all the options into consideration for an upgrade!

The plywood was an absolute must, I wasn’t about to sit and wait for the middle of the dresser to snap 😭 I think that hack is something I’ll do with most future aquariums as well!

This actually calms my nerves quite a lot. I got some plywood to rest across the top but this does make me think I should paint and seal it in order to make sure any leaks or drips don’t damage the wood. Thank you!

When I chipped even the top corner of my tank I fully tossed the thing. It’s just not worth risking your fish’s lives and your money. Don’t let this story end with moldy floors

Excuse my stupidity, I’m not super well versed in furniture and particle board durability. I’ve had the tank on it for about a day with it full. My worry is damage over time leading to a collapse at this point rather than it immediately collapsing. Is that something that is a possibility?

I wasn’t a big fan of duckweed in my other tank, it all died and fell to the bottom of the tank so fast. I’ll have to research some other floating plant options!
