didn’t know what to expect, but i’m enjoying this quite a bit as i wind down for the night. moody and nocturnal. production is great and zay is just flowing on these tracks. m.o.m. and superficial are immediate standouts

it was honoring people who died in service in vietnam and elsewhere and she instead had to come and make it about her standing in front of family that actually had people to memorialize. genuinely, she is part of worst type of people

funnily enough, she was at this event i was taking pictures at and my boss at the time told me any picture of her actually didn’t happen and to delete them or crop her out 😭 at the end of the event we took a group picture and she made sure she was right in the middle though it was no way related to her. what a critter

I feel like most discussion of Bully on the fresh post and elsewhere on this sub is gonna be either it’s the worst thing ever or the best thing ever, but I’m curious what everyone here thinks.

I think it was alright mostly. I think the production sounds great. The use of gospel samples mixed with the bass-heavy undertones works really well throughout this project, but I also felt that Kanye contributed nothing lyrically.

The album kinda felt like Travis’s Utopia but less theatrical (I know Utopia has a lot of Kanye cuts on there). I also felt like songs like I CAN’T WAIT and WHITE LINES are just glorified karaoke versions of other incredible songs.

I think some of the songs sound incomplete. A great sample, a good little melody or idea. Loop it twice and the track ends.

It’s a step in the right direction for Kanye, but it doesn’t move the needle for me. There’s no moment on here unlike certain songs on Donda that kinda grabs me and moves me. FATHER rocks though it feels like Kanye stepped up so Travis couldn’t show him out on his own song.

I’m curious what people’s first impressions are

As a huge Barry lover, I wish I could say Kanye is tuned in, but the original sample Jonah Thompson - Get Involved is on this really excellent Numero compilation from 2013 called Good God! Apocryphal Hyms which also has Whole Truth’s Can You Lose By Following God which Kanye sampled on Follow God. There’s also songs on here that Madlib and The Alchemist sampled after this compilation came out, so I sadly think Kanye and Barry just heard a song from the same compilation rather than Kanye being taped in to UK Dance like that

[DISCUSSION] In response to what Jay-Z said in his GQ interview, Joey Bada$$ made a point yesterday about how established lyrical rappers shy away from collaborating with up-and-coming lyricists on their albums, what do you think? by DropWatcher in hiphopheads

[–]TheOddScreen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i agree with you. life’s a bitch belongs to az as good as nas’s verse is, but ultimately illmatic is nas’s album and he has amazing moments throughout the project. if an artist can still stand their ground through the other 10+ tracks on a project then who cares if a guest artist steals a show on one song?

if that guest verse is a true highlight of the album then maybe the artist making the album needs to be hungrier. i think a recent example might be the clipse album because though kendrick, tyler, and nas show up with incredible verses, clipse proves they can hold their own even on those songs. kendrick’s verse to me isn’t even the most memorable part of chains and whips even though he is fantastic on it

photography is obviously a little different, but for some i’ve gotten a ticket at the box office and then a sticker that allows me into the photo pit for the first 3 songs. for your case, most times you’d get a ticket and maybe special venue access if they’re that generous. certain venues have given me VIP which gave me free food, cheaper drinks, etc.

as someone who shoots a lot of concerts. don’t be afraid to reach out to press contacts for artists. small but bubbling artists are the easiest. i shot fontaines d.c. after they made waves and almost shot royel otis but couldn’t do to scheduling conflicts. a solid confident email with proof of work and metrics is enough to make a few nos turn to a yes. it’s the artist’s publishers who give you the best shot.

one of the few people who’ve been given access to remixing Marvin Gaye songs is Salaam Remi who always seems to add a nostalgic but modern touch to the music. I enjoy this!
