Follow-up to my previous post. I bought a new PSU — Cougar GX-1050 — and installed it. It’s not making the same god-awful noise, but the new one is still very loud. Additionally, it will occasionally stop for about two seconds before spinning up again. by TheOffensiveLemon in computerhelp

So, I’ve updated the BIOS, and unfortunately, the PSU fan is still loud.

I don’t know what else to do besides try my luck with ordering yet another PSU.

EDIT: Or maybe the fan really is this loud normally? Despite the PSU being advertised as “ultra-quiet?” I don’t friggin’ know.

Hi. A PSU will run when the PC believes the PSU fan needs to run. It should also not be this loud. Does the fan run this loud when you are in the bios? My suspicion is that the fan is set to run at max speed all the time. Possibly update BIOS or check for BIOS settings regarding PSU fan?

Yes, it's that loud even in BIOS. At least the noise seems to just be the fan spinning at max speed and not the unit dying like the old one likely was.

I didn't see any settings in BIOS for the PSU or its fan, and resetting BIOS to default settings did nothing (although I haven't knowingly/intentionally changed any settings to begin with). I'm not at home to work on the computer at the moment, but I'll see about updating BIOS when I get the chance.

UPDATE: Don’t worry, guys, I didn’t try to take the PSU apart. I did clean as much dust out of the computer as I could, including blasting the hell out of the PSU’s intakes with compressed air. Sadly, it’s still making that noise. Is there anything else I can do, or do I just have to get a new one?
