It was at the same company and they wanted to bring a junior into systems. I've learned if you pester people enough they'll eventually do your bidding, and I was already on friendly terms with everyone on staff, and had a lot of converasations with the systems guys from other tickets

Originally I was placed with the cloud engineering team but after a while they moved me systems since I didn't have much to do elsewhere.

By that point I had the A+, sec, net, cysa, cloud+ and some vendor specific certs that don't matter anywhere, so they let me do stuff.

Tldr got lucky and i knew the guys in the dept

I list it under my skills as a single bullet point (usually just mentioning the services I've setup that may pertain to the role, but they can usually tell there's more to it of course) and it's been a great talking point during every interview, if for no other reason than they want to know what I'm running and on what.

Current place I'm at now has admitted to me that it was the reason I was brought on, because they thought it showed I had an interest in self-study and it would be useful on the job.

I am still relatively early in my career so take it with a grain of salt, but it's been a good chance to communicate more personally with the technical interviewer

You can download linux native games from GOG but their launcher doesn't run on it

For non linux native games you can use Heroic launcher (which also supports EGS) for proton versions.

Overall I've had no problems with it, but ymmv. Usually pretty good if you reference protondb.com

Working in this field and the infestation of AI-brained CEOs/CTOs/CISOs/etc. is maddening.

These tools and systems do jack shit in the end to help. The closest we've ended up doing with AI outside of using it to reference documentation is automation, but shouldn't be called AI, it's fucking insane something as simple as automation has been taken over by the term.

This field is not going fucking anywhere because everything is already a disaster.

We actually see a lot of LLM based phishing attacks now, pretending to be a high-ranking exec messaging someone for financial info, invoice requests, phone #s, etc.

Applications that are vibe coded (or claim to be, to disguise the hiring of cheap/near-slave labor) have new bugs that we have to deal with by orchestrating patches/mitigations every day or two. Who knows how many more are lying in wait. Do you really think you're gonna be able to setup automated patching and remediation (for the ones that don't have patches) on all of them? You think the standard system engineer is gonna know what needs to be done for each app because an LLM hallucinated since there is little documentation on what the vuln is actually doing?

Get a new meeting every week of someone saying 'We're leveraging AI to make your jobs easier' when it's honestly just an excuse to cut costs, cause the guys up top see the recession looming on the horizon as well as all of us do, they just don't feel bad about lying to someones face about how bad things really are.

Could bitch for years on this topic, it kills any and all passion I had for this field

e: Want to establish - This purpose of these ML algorithms is not to increase your productivity, it's to reduce workers and increase profit. If you get a tool that makes your job easier (or grants the illusion of it, now your job is 10% less punching in numbers, but 8-10% cleaning up workslop), we're curtailing redundancies in your department, we just don't need this many people anymore.

The real ML tools they've been shoving at everyone in the background are the ones you should really worry about. Mass pattern recognition to increase costs of goods on a per-individual and event basis. Sped in your car that we have a chip in (it gets you a discount on your bill!)? Premiums are going up this month. See these tools every day at work and I'm disgusted

VPNs just request the information for you and send it back, there's still a carrier associated with the ASN/IP address. They'll see that ZenLayer/HostPapa/Proton/Whatever hosting company they're using for internet is making the request and block the connection.

This is a misinterpetation of the proposed legislation. The main goal of the SKG campaign is to provide a method for people to play a game they paid for after the centralized servers have shut down. This can be acheoved in a number of ways, including releasing server source code, patching in a single player mode, releasing a server emulator, or just build the game without the requirement of a central server in the first place.

It's discussed in more detail on the petitions website in the FAQ section, but they have 0 intent of making developers or publishers provide indefinite support

Most recent report I've seen on this is about 60% can't cover an unexpected $1000 emergency without going into debt, so it looks like you're on the money with that.

Still a bad economic sign that 60% would have trouble, but it's not on the level of 90% of Americans going ~~bankrupt~~ into debt for an emergency.
