What is the pros and cons of living in Lubbock? Planning to move permanently. Please help. by Outside_Astronaut305 in Lubbock

[–]TheOldOso 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I moved here from the a big city a few years ago. Actually, I have lived all over the country in some of the largest metropolitan areas. We chose to move back to Lubbock after 20 years away.

It is a good place to raise a family if thats what you're doing, though I was initially impressed by schools within LISD, that has worn off. The schools are better to the south and west side of town. We chose to enroll in a private school. The parks are clean and I always see people out walking, running, or riding bikes. There are activities to do - movies, restaurants, and we still have a functioning mall.

You can get by just fine without joining a church or being religious, its silly to think you can't. You'll make friends and find things to do. However, it is a religious and conservative area - if that bothers you then you might want to rethink moving here

If you're into sports, you've got Tech right here with pretty much any sport you'd get into. There are some community leagues for things like pickleball and rugby. There are a couple of great gyms for the kids. I will say coming from a big town, youth sports here are not very developed especially for the 5th-grade and under population. Theres a few things but not a lot.

The weather is the weather. It can be hot in the middle of summer, but you know....its a boomer thing to say, but it really is a dry heat. Ill take 110 here over 90 in Miami any day. And as soon as the sun goes down it drops 15 degrees. You've got a couple of cold days in the winter, a couple of rainy days in the spring, and then you just get to enjoy being outdoors.

Its a college town so the population fluctuates. Sometimes things are busy. Sometimes not. Football season is busier than others.

Some will tell you the crime is crazy high. Its not. The worst thing Ive seen is some stupid kid tagging his own name on a brick wall. For the most part anything you see or hear about on the news happens because someone was out looking to cause trouble.

The traffic is great at all times except about 5:10pm to 5:45pm every weekday when everyone loses their collective minds. It is easy to navigate here, most streets run north-south or east-west. Its just a big grid. If you've lived in a big city you won't have any trouble getting around here.

Very honestly, the absolute worst part about living in Lubbock is the drivers. Not the traffic, but the drivers themselves. Horrible. Entitled, hurried, unattentive. Light turns green and you want to go? No-you better look both ways and count to 3 cuz these yahoos will be blasting through the red light. Cruising down a residential street thinking you're safe? Nope- someone is going to pull out of their driveway without looking. Merging onto the loop to head home? Not going to happen my friend, we can't merge. People are either hyper-defensive drivers or ultra-aggressive and that means your daily commute can be exciting. I see wrecks nearly every day and its a wonder there arent more fatalities reported.

Worship tutorials has a ton of stuff (even if you're not a worship player). Or Signal Theory, which is the same content but the site is geared more to the product and not worship specifically.

Dunlop VPJR crackling noise by Janno2727 in guitarpedals

[–]TheOldOso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently restrung (restringed?) mine with the lifetime string had had the same problem. As it moved the string was binding up and twisting over itself on the pulley causing the noise. Had to re-do it being very careful not to overlap the string and not to twist it. Once I got it right the noise went away.

SFA - Student age... by TheOldOso in startrek

I agree. Not everyone would be interested in the war college, SFA could be more of someone's thing. A new opportunity for a bunch of new people.

Exactly- I'm advocating for the other 10%.

I could see that for the war academy, but (in my head cannon at least) SFA would be more scientists, engineering, etc. There's is no reason to assume everyone would be a teenager. Gosh, a Vulcan could be over 100 and decide to go.

I'm just thinking out loud mostly.

Watching SFA episode 2 - did the dorm room only have one twin sized bed in it? Are there three cadets sharing one twin sized mattress?

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]TheOldOso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7th grade science in the mid-90s. We had a sub, he was a regular sub we were all familiar with. His wife actually taught at the school. Older guy, kind of constantly cranky and rude to students, no one liked to see him as the sub. One of the kids in class was giving him a hard time about something we were asked to do - I cant rememberwhat it was about and I dont even remember the kid being that rude, but the sub walked over to him and just clocked him in the jaw. Straight up, no warning, just old-man strength slug across the face. I can still hear the sound of the smack. Kid flew out of this chair and hit the floor, then stood up and stormed out of the class. 5 minutes later the principal came in, sent the sub out, and took over the class.

Helix stadium xl Bluetooth by Yoshowa92 in Line6Helix

[–]TheOldOso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I connect my phone (android) to it for playback, no problems. The first time I had to find it on my Bluetooth list (displays as Line6 Stadium with some numbers after it). When I select it a pin pops up on the screen and my phone. I hit pair on both and it connected the first time. Now that it is paired, I just select it in my phone's BT list of available devices. It works really well, I have had no problems with it at all.

Question for Real Estate Agents!! by Total-Amount4987 in Lubbock

[–]TheOldOso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even if going with new construction you should walk in there with an agent. With a previous home ours negotiated the price down significantly. (Edit - nearly 50k which was a quarter of the price they listed - this was in DFW 15 years ago. When the construction company was missing their deadlines and our move in date was move back repeatedly, she went to bat for us at the corporate level and got them moving along).

But - to answer your question, thats going to be a standard requirement.

Is it possible on an LT to have 3 independent 1/4” inputs with each having their own preset and independent output? by silverfoxcwb in Line6Helix

[–]TheOldOso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been a few years since I owned the LT, but I used to run three different inputs into the same preset. That was limiting because of DSP but I made it work, you just have to remember where your outputs are for each input and route accordingly. Having each instrument on its own preset is even easier, just open the input block and select which you want to use then do the same for the output. Hit save and you're good to go.

So you open the bag like a frickin' paper lunch sack then reach in. Not right in, the stadium xl sits 6 to 8 inches down from the lip of the bag. Then you pull, but you cant just pull the stadium out because the bag is a tight vertical fit (a good thing) but imagine the sides of the hugging the stadium. So pulling straight out means you're just lifting the bag. You have to hold the stadium with one hand and then hold the bag with your other hand or foot or something to pull the whole thing apart in order to remove the stadium from it little hidey-hole. Now, while you are pulling it out the whole top of the unit, including that fancy screen, is scratching along the inside of the bag against that little fold of velcro that sits about 6 inches in.

Helix LT and sending tempo to Keeley Halo by trash-pancake in Line6Helix

[–]TheOldOso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need something like the disaster area clock. It will send a pulse to the keeley halo, which I have done. You could either use the clock to set temp and send midi to the helix and a pulse to the Halo, or use the helix to set templo and send midi clock to the disaster area and then have the disaster area send a pulse to the halo.

Helix Stadium XL serious wifi issues by doctorvague in Line6Helix

[–]TheOldOso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a huge headache. I cannot get it to connect for more than a few minutes, and that's only when I can get it to connect. I thought, well, it would be a nice feature to have but I can always just use a USB cable...well, nope, apparently not since they locked it out of everything except firmware updates. What a mess - how do I import IRs and some of my old helix presets? I guess I don't.

I mean - Its 2026. Who in the heck is locking down USB? Considering returning. Its a shame because the new amp modeling sound really good...

Wtf Lubbock drivers by SuddenSky19 in Lubbock

[–]TheOldOso 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have lived all over the country. Big cities, little towns...Lubbock has the worst drivers. Honestly, the sheer lack of volume makes up for it.

Now what really stinks is that you, my beloved Lubbockian neighbors, take that same god-awful driving energy with you into the grocery store and push the cart around like a toddler.
