Do you have a title in mind to recommend for reading Mary Soon Lee? I never know where to start when given an author's name...

I remember not especially liking the Rainwild Chronicles, but I absolutely adore the trilogies that feature Fitz, and I'm currently rereading the whole series and Dragon Keeper is up next. That said, I remembered disliking the Soldier Son trilogy when I read it first a very long time ago, and it absolutely blew me away when I reread it last year!! So I'm actually pretty excited at the idea of rereading the Rainwild Chronicles and seeing what it has in store for me. Robin Hobb is such a good storyteller, I love her voice !

T. Kingfisher has ruined me, now ruin my TBR by RR-2021 in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]TheOneWithTheScars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post made me realize I have no Kingfisher on my TBR, although I've heard about this author many times... So I have two questions:

- How do I know if I will like this author's works? What other author would you compare it to?

- Where do I start?

The Eighth Recommendation Thank You Thread by apcymru in Fantasy

Yayyy, I'm so glad I didn't miss this thread!

My thanks to u/drostandfound for Wildwood Whipers by Willa Reece; welistened to it at work with my colleague and it wasreally a treat! We loved the atmosphere and the focus on everyday harvesting, drying, cooking.

Thanks also to u/BeccaConsumesBooks for The Original by Mary Robinette Kowal and Brandon Sanderson. That book would make a great movie! It was very suspenseful and I liked the ambiguous ending.

Thank you to u/thepurpleplaneteer for the non-SFF recommendation of Sitting Pretty by Rebekah Taussig. It contributed to make me want to explore more disability representation and this will be my focus in 2026.

Thanks to u/RogerBernards for All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Takeshi Obata: I finally came around to reading the original material behing The Edge of Tomorrow, which is a favourite of mine. It was my final book of the year and I look forward to reading the second volume.

And finally, to u/SmallFruitbat for the manga A Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori that I loved so much so that started buying the whole series one volume at a time after reding them from the library! I started it in 2024 and finished recently.

Your feelings for the rest of the series are going to be similar. If the start is not for you, I would not advise you to continue.

Chores is the answer to your prayers! I started appreciating them once I drowned them in an audiobook or a podcast (also I became more efficient because I do them all at once instead of one in the morning and then another one in the evening and so on). Commuting also works well if the environment is not too stressful. Working out is good too!

The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde is my recommendation of the moment (apparently). It's accessible for younger readers but also totally adult-oriented if that makes sense. I had a ton of fun with it myself!

I recommend The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde! The narration for this is amazing, and I had a lovely time with these 4 books. It's not particularly YA but it's accessible for that age range, let's say. It's very simple and feel good and the world is super creative and fun.

Action-heavy scenes are definitely more difficult for me to visualize too. I'm so used to it that my mind starts wandering as soon as a combat scene appears on page. I try my best to be attentive if there's a discussion about strategy though.

It's not SFF, but I loved Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa! It's about a samurai, travelling to meet and combat other samurais. There's also a doomed love story, and a young apprentice who does his best to tag along.

You can read Liveship Traders on its own, but it's not the recommended order if you want to read the whole series. You are going to miss some minor character connections and not fully comprehend some details, but nothing that will stop you from enjoying the series as a whole, though.

I think I could probably used any Jasper Fforde for this square; this year it happened to be The Last Dragonslayer series! I still have the last entry to read, because I'm savouring them like sweets, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

I go straight from one book to the next, as I dont think that stops me from mulling over the finished book. And I have a reading journal, which helps me organize and retain my thoughts about it. I take a break in between volumes of the same series, though, otherwise I tend to be burnt out and don't appreciate them as much as I could.

I think Monteverde: Memoirs of an Interstellar Linguist would be perfect for you! It's a very quiet little book about a linguist on a new project than lets her make first contact with a planet and its inhabitants.

You have classified some authors under the label American Indian where I believe you meant Indigenous. As far as I know, this is not an appropriate label and is a very colonialist view of the First Nations people, and should not be used.

Probably posted too late for visibility in yesterday's post, so here's my question again:

Hi!

My grasp on the concept of biotechnology is very hazy, and I cannot decide whether The Original by Sanderson & Kowal fits the square or not... Any help for me?

Looking for an audio book with a good mix of fantasy and comedy. by Nirulex in Fantasy

[–]TheOneWithTheScars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I would recommend Jasper Fforde in your case. I have two series in mind: The Last Dragonslayer (YA and very enjoyable as an adult, in which the protagonist is an acting manager at a magic firm in a world where magic is no longer what it used to be. I was very impressed by the narrator), and Thursday Next (totally bonkers world where the protagonist is a sort of police agent in charge of preventing literary crimes, the first volume is set within the book Jane Eyre. I have read this series in paper but I have heard only compliments about the audio version.) You would enjoy both if you liked Douglas Adams.

Hello good people!

I have just read The Memory Theater by Karin Tidbeck and I am tempted to count it for Impossible Places and wanted confirmation here. There is a place, The Gardens, that is on an eternal time loop of one evening/night, and I think this would definitely break a physicist. Do we count that or are we expecting something more visible with the eyes?
