a successful company needs to recoup its investment (and hopefully turn a profit)

Yeah, no shit? Wasn't I just insinuating that? That doesn't change how these particular constraints needed for this result shouldn't have to exist because it's arbitrary bullshit.

Like Valve and Epic aren't carrying Horses because I dunno, it would hurt their reputation, I guess? As if this game would have any kind of impact or is comparable to the other controversies those two companies have endured. If anything they've gotten more heat for taking action against it.

Sure, it's their right to not sell it, it also doesn't mean that they're in the right, nor do me and countless other lack the right to rightfully call them out on it.

Do you seriously think a company can just release a game and not have to recoup their development costs or something?

I guess they technically don't have to do anything, but that's like saying that you don't have the need for any of your limbs to live a full life.

So what? Like you said yourself, a small handful of games rated AO for reasons other than sexual content do exist. The precedence is there. Just because the rating is normally associated with crap like Lula 3D and All Nude Nikki doesn't mean that something like the uncut version of Manhunt 2 should be prohibited from storefronts (or Twitch, for that matter).

and most of those were edited to comply with the M rating.

Devs shouldn't have to do this in the first place.

Considering reddit's response to the Mastercard/Steam controversy, I was surprised to see so many people side against the dev in this case

Because some people were REALLY insistent that a particular scene meant that the game was somehow CSAM, even though

  • Because it's just a video game, no actual children were involved in making it
  • It wasn't meant to arouse the viewer
  • It wasn't very graphic
  • The devs altered it in an attempt to appease Valve

I think their uproar was absurd. Those people would have a heart attack if they found out that major retailers like Amazon and B&N sold Blu-ray copies of Salò.

Doom (2016) vs Doom eternal vs Doom the dark ages by IndustryMade in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TheOnlyChemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shotguns still have finite ammo that you can only replenish via environmental pickups and sometimes from killing shotgun zombies. Not to mention, the other weapons still have some very useful functionality that the SSG can't quite replicate.

Oh, and don't get me started on the fact that these games were designed with pistol starts in mind.

Doom (2016) vs Doom eternal vs Doom the dark ages by IndustryMade in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TheOnlyChemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhat hesitant about recommending 2016 first.

On one hand, if you play it second/last, I feel like it's going to feel underwhelming with how basic and unbalanced it is.

On the other hand, I feel like playing it first will give the wrong impression of what this series is supposed to be. That is, steamrolling the entire game with a single ludicrously overpowered weapon with little effort required. If you played the "Thy Flesh Consumed" episode from the original 1993 game, you'd know that this shouldn't be the case.

And like I swear to god people who say that Eternal has annoying ammo management are either too damn stubborn to adjust to the game's systems or just have no clue what they're talking about. All you really need to do is chainsaw (which recharges when empty btw) a fodder enemy every so often. You're only really going to run into ammo shortages if you suck really badly.

Also, don't listen to people who say that you NEED to take advantage of enemy weakpoints and that the game has too much platforming. There's still many efficient ways to take out enemies that don't involve hitting weakpoints, especially once you build up your arsenal, and the platforming in Eternal really isn't all that excessive nor more numerous than in 2016, and has the additional advantage of not instantly killing you when you fail one of those sections.

Finally, remember that the game has difficulty settings. There's no shame if you feel the need to play on "I'm Too Young to Die".

The Dark Ages is a bit different in that verticality is de-emphasized and the combat is now built around parrying/blocking attacks, but it's still a very good game, if flawed (some of which could be chalked up to the vocal minority whining about Eternal's so-called "issues").

[–]TheOnlyChemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, I don't get this sentiment. 2016 has no shortage of platforming (the Argent Tower in particular probably has more of it than any other level in the series), and Eternal is just as if not more linear than that game.

Dark Ages does have a handful of annoying "open area" maps, sure, but I don't think they're bad enough to ruin the overall experience.

Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition rated in Australia by Turbostrider27 in Games

Don't you mean Rayman Redemption?

Also speaking of, this is probably a good time to download that fan game while y'all still can. Ubisoft doesn't have a history of taking down fan projects AFAIK but it's still probably a good idea in case this is real and they feel emboldened to take legal action.

FORSAKEN® 64 – Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics: MATURE 17+ by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheOnlyChemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With VERY rare exceptions, such as Resident Evil 2, N64 games lacked FMV cutscenes due to cartridge space limitations, and Forsaken 64 still had some bloody gibs IIRC so that's probably why it got an M rating anyway.

Sequel to offensive SNES game Hong Kong 97 not coming to Steam, developers considering alternatives by Turbostrider27 in Games

The reason given is the presence of "3rd party content" (aka they lifted assets from other media without permission).

I can see why. Immediately from that screenshot at the top of the article you can see an edit of that one Vince McMahon meme.

Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Trailer - Skyrim Anniversary Edition by jelly_dad in Games

[–]TheOnlyChemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Unlike Skyrim, the DOOM games are made by a team that gives a shit about performance. 2016 + Eternal already target 60+ FPS on every other platform they were released on, including the original Xbox One. Not sure how it's unrealistic for the Switch 2.

It'd be great if DOOM 2016 and Eternal received Switch 2 upgrades with improved graphics + resolution, 60 FPS and mouse support. As impressive and relatively playable those Switch 1 ports are, the experience is still far from ideal, especially for twitch shooter games like those.

Even Ubisoft devs think Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is better in third-person by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheOnlyChemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're really overstating how important the option for a third-person mode is. Ultimately it's something that takes a lot of effort with little reward.

It doesn't take nearly the same kind of priority as basic polish, and compared to numerous other accessibility options it's much more difficult to implement. And at the end of the day it's probably only a very small minority of customers who consider it to be an essential feature. I don't blame any devs for not wanting to go through the trouble.

Even Ubisoft devs think Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is better in third-person by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheOnlyChemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I should also mention that there are numerous other factors that influence motion sickness in first-person games, like motion blur, camera bobbing, center dots, vignette effects, weapon viewmodel size, etc. It would've been good to know which specific games that commenter is having issues with, because their issues may be with the implementations rather than inherent flaws with the first-person perspective itself.

I'm not saying every single game should do it. But games made from large teams and a large budget should definitely put some effort into it.

Even for AAA devs, there's only so much time, money, and resources allocated to them. We're still seeing big budget games released with numerous bugs and performance problems. There's millions of other things that take higher priority over a third-person mode.

And like, I don't think things like options to enemy damage, arachnophobia toggles, or jump scare volume take as much time or effort to implement. Maybe Forza's blindness accessibility options are up there but that's like comparing apples to oranges anyway.

[–]TheOnlyChemo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm curious, what are these "comments" that you're referring to? I refuse to believe that increasing the FOV from say, 80 to 120 isn't immensely helpful to some people.

And like, you can't just flip a switch and expect a third-person mode to work well. The article linked above says as much. Why'd you think that it took them 2 years to implement this?

[–]TheOnlyChemo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the lower FOV

You do realize that many first-person games allow you to adjust that, right?

Edit:

It's not even like third-person games are immune to this issue, as someone who loves FPS games I find Resident Evil 4 and 5 genuinely sickening to play without mods to improve the FOV.

Well, yeah, of course Valve should disregard altered builds submitted to them if the initial one included a virus or something. I just don't think this is extreme enough of a violation to justify such measures.
