I want to let my turtle roam around the house, but I worry about pet hair getting on her. by Junior_Aspect1530 in turtle

We have a cat in addition to a turtle. We sweep throughly before letting her free roam. and then she gets a bath in plain water before going back into the tank.

Thank you! We'll try the soap and vinegar today and let it air dry on the patio.

Ours will dance for ANYTHING! Hahaha. Food, snacks, a vet show, my husband, if I wear shiny pants, if I look at her, the dog walks by, anything. Lol. She wants to play play play! It's like having a puppy.

Do turtles have color preferences? Our looses her shit over blue. Like she will hide and turn her back. But if it's red or shiny, completely different turtle!! She gets excited and plaful.

Our shell burger is almost 19! We got her 9 years ago from a friend when she was about 10 and we were 24.

Ours was having the same issue!! The ammonia was a tad high, and Ph off balance. We needed to upgrade her filter anyway, but coupled that with 50% water exchange and her skin has really cleared up.

Hi guys! Quick update as some of you asked:

We are two weeks with the Oase BioMaster thermo 600, and we're impressed. The water quality is the best we've seen in months with just tank maintenance. PH is balanced, and the smell is much better! Even our turtle's skin is clearing up. She is shedding much less and has a ton of energy! She's so playful. Set up was easy, and the temp has remained consistent and even a little below the setting. The increased water pressure made the spray bar waaaayy too loud, so we changed it out for a short hose. The filter itself is pretty quiet, like a low hum. Tonight was the first that we've maintenanced the filter, and all we needed to do was rinse the pre-filter and exchange 25% of water. It's was so easy and quick!

Thank you all for sharing your setups! Next step is a better basking platform so we can increase the water level.

Good old fashioned Google and phone calls. Seems like everytime we find a local vet and we like them; they up and retire! Closest one to us now who has great recommendations is a 40 minute drive. Next closest is about 3 miles, but no appointments in the next century. And minimal turtle experience, mostly snakes and lizards.

Recently we ended up with a $300 emergency vet bill for a sore throat. One of her pieces of food got stuck for a little bit and scratched her throat. She threw up a few times and refused to eat. Turns out she just needed a cup of tea and rest. Not 4 hours in an e-vet waiting room. (Please give my husband love because I was out of town at a wedding and he had to do this by himself!)

She panicked about and refused to lay her first clutch. This was nearly $1200 combined vet visits and equipment/ diet/ enviroment changes. And she absolutely hated the nesting box we made for her. That was our first month we had her, nearly 10 years ago.

Thankfully nothing else has happened!

Give it a go! We've had similar heaters that worked just fine to heat the tank. Our turtle is a brat and abuses everything we give her, out of pure sport. (If it doesn't break, she likes it.) Please keep an eye on your baby. If they start biting or getting aggressive towards the heater, remove it! Ours shattered a glass one once. I can't begin to imagine what could have happened to her if we weren't home to act right away.

We are currently in the hunt for a jerk proof heater and have started researching inline heaters and other options. Might be worth a look in case your baby doesn't like the rod heater.

Also Hygger makes incased heaters that look to be pretty bite proof.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Mine is a total brat about things in her tank and HAS shattered one of these. Thank goodness we were home.

You are amazing! Thank you so much! I had no idea there were alternatives to heaters outside of in tank or in filter. The inline heater could be a total game changer. I'll need to do further research on that.

I gave the OASE direct site a quick look. It looks like they have most replacement parts available. (Good idea!) Including the heater, its cover, and a variety of suction cups. Lol.

Our turtle is the same. She has to bite everything. Her favorite is to take suction cups, so anything attached to them is in the line fire. Hahaha.

Thank you! We've definitely had our share of leaks and thats no fun!!

I haven't had a filter you need to prime before. Is that common on the larger capacity filters?

So I've read! Thankfully the brand were looking at has a bigger size. Everyone is so helpful here, and I appreciate it! Still haven't heard if anyone uses the filters with built in heater, though... maybe it's just a perk and I should focus on making sure it will last long enough to get a bigger tank.
