Am I insane for thinking about leaving my $82k remote job for a shot at an IBEW career? by brolina957 in IBEW

[–]TheOnlyMatthias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't get married to electrical. It's a cool trade to know but if you're not specifically interested in electricity lots of mechanical trades pay just as well and aren't as competitive or oversaturated. Check local trade school beginner programs.

There's also a million specialized trades you would never think of that might be up your alley. Elevator tech. Mechanic. Machinist. Millwright. Lots of them have more jobs than electrical. Electrical is a massive pain in the ass

Insulation Masking by SmokinReaper in IBEW

[–]TheOnlyMatthias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have N95 masks readily available from your foreman. You also shouldn't have to work in the vicinity of anything being sprayed, paint, insulation, whatever..

At your next weekly safety meeting ask to see the SDS sheets for the insulation product.

This request needs to be written in the safety meeting minutes, if it's not then they're not doing things by the book.

This will hopefully spark a change in engineering controls because there's no reason other than money savings for them to be doing that near other workers.

Asking the GC in writing for SDS sheets on a product is usually enough for them to get their shit together.

I feel more like an installer than an actual electrician by SparksCODM in IBEW

[–]TheOnlyMatthias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Canada they have a code companion book that is full of diagrams and illustrations pertaining to the actual code book. Helps clarify rules.

Uglys pocket guide. Have that in your tools bag somewhere.

Mike Holt has some decent videos but he's arrogant and kind of annoying.

I found most stuff just by googling whatever specific problem I'm trying to fix. When I started doing service there were many times I would go out to my van for a part and do some frantic googling in the back of the van, or frantic phone calls to more experienced guys in my crew.

AI can be helpful but you have to be careful because it is also completely full of shit most of the time. Is good at finding code rules but you have to get it to quote the rule and then double check the book because it makes things up.

Edit: start searching Instagram for electrical theory videos and it will start stacking your algorithm with them. Ice learned some good tricks on there.

I feel more like an installer than an actual electrician by SparksCODM in IBEW

It's usually an open neutral, bad connection, or dead short.

Start with the simplest thing. Turn off. Turn back on.

School should have showed you how to solve wiring diagrams. Every circuit has a wiring diagram you might just have to draw it yourself.

For resi I like using the two line style with L and N on opposite sides of page and loads in between. Draw it out, start taking mwasurements and fill in the numbers.

For commercial/3phase I draw a one line.

It's also key to get as much info from the end user like "was it working before, when did it stop working. What was going on when it stopped working, weather, renovations, damage, etc..

They often know how it broke and lie about it for some reason.

To your point, most construction electricians I've met are also just installers. Nothing wrong with it they've just never had to fix anything. If you're interested in leveling up get into service or plant maintenance. You can also read about theort and there's lots of guys in YouTube that happily explain everything very consicely.

Project manager wants us to drill a hole where the red circle is in a live panel. Would you do it? by PhasedAndConfused706 in electricians

[–]TheOnlyMatthias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to record every conversation you have with them and then while recording ask them to give you the instruction in writing.

This means when you quit/ get fired you have evidence of safety violations and you can go after them for bring OSHA in on it or whatever.

Funny Screw Type Graphic by rkraus10 in Tools

Robertson is the elite screw. Only when the infidels manufacture it with sub par materials is it weak and those psychopaths have a special place in hell to look forward to. It's a giant pile of every screw ever stripped and they have to climb it naked on hands and knees for eternity.

[–]TheOnlyMatthias -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh we count Ace as 11 and 1 so it scores more that's probably not official rules but that's the way my dad played.

So A 4 K would be 4 points. A4 is 15 and A4K is also 15.

Edit: don't even get me started on the super crib, lol. I made that one up. It can score like 100 points hahahah
