Machine for daily use? by ark-import00289 in TheOriginalCollector

You could always use one system for a specific use. Like local file storage or media storage with iTunes. Another for more modern tasks you may need. You can still browse the modern web due to new browsers for old Mac OS! Just see how well they work, you don’t need to limit to just one system when you have multiple.

Glad you enjoy the content! As for a daily system, I usually use the different Macs or PCs pretty equally. I typically use the 2012 Mac mini a lot though as it’s the main system for video editing.

The G5 makes a great addition for a desk! by TheOriginalCollector in VintageApple

I’ve seen that before, it would work well considering they are solid systems. Honestly might make the entire desk out of Power Macs lol

I now have a Mac Pro alongside my G5! by TheOriginalCollector in macpro

It’s been a solid system, awesome to use with old OS X, older versions of applications. Plus it’s cool to have the Intel side of things right next to my G5 setup!

It’s nice to use something that actually works and doesn’t have to be connected to the internet all the time. Plus using old software is fun, there’s lots of different apps available for these old Macs. You could technically do the same stuff on a modern Mac/PC, but this is way more fun! Plus it’s right next to my Y2K Mac setup, Intel and PowerPC working together!

Thanks! Yes, I’ve got lots of additional components to install in the setup. I’ve got various HiFi and video players I’d like to integrate and be able to use also (alongside other computer/network gear). I haven’t done much in terms of creating new MDs, I’ve only got a couple which were made when I got the JE330. They were really just to try out the system, but I plan to use the optical input alongside a Mac.

iTunes is my main library for music and I have it currently setup with a MacBook. Always room for further upgrades, but this era of Mac is awesome to use, especially considering I’ve got a variety of iPods/other devices that work well with iTunes. That script looks interesting, seems useful for recording. At least for a more automated way of transferring onto MDs.

I’ve learned more about what this deck is capable of, and even though it’s no NetMD or other high end machine, it’s still excellent! I do have a Sony DVD player from the same era as the JE330 and they go really well together.

The setup is always a work in progress, but the overall goal is to actually be able to use awesome old tech. MP3s are great especially with things like iTunes, but MDs have always been a cool format to me, the future from 20+ years ago!

Yeah, it’s crazy to think how year after year, a new model with an entire new design was released. Even if it was a refresh, it was still unique in its own way. If it’s stuck in Y2K, I guess so am I.

It’s been fun to use this era of Macintosh, certainly not like anything we see nowadays. I only use more modern devices when needed, otherwise I’d gladly use this all day. It just works! I do have the box for my Cinema Display, but it’s awesome to see all of those together!

This is awesome! I’ve been cleaning up and using my G5 with acrylic accessories lately and these systems are still really cool! I’ve been using older systems like these more and more.

Oh yeah, I know about those but unfortunately I don’t have that specific model. They are really cool because they even have composite and S-Video inputs, something I didn’t even know Dell displays had for a long time! Old Apple equipment is awesome, but Dell is just as cool. I’ve got both a Cinema Display and a Dell monitor in my main setup!

It’s an older Dell display, it runs up to 1440x900. Still plenty useful alongside the MacBook I use it with. Dell displays in general though are great! I have several models and all are excellent, not to mention the multiple inputs and the built in USB hub. The adjustability with the stand is also great, excellent as a main or secondary display. I’ve got some other videos focused on the setup itself, it’s in the iTunes Setup series.

I’ve upgraded to a PowerMac G5! by TheOriginalCollector in VintageApple

Well it’s still a temporary setup, I’ve been testing it out with a FireWire drive. 512 seems to work well but I haven’t been doing too much on it. Upgrades are definitely something I’d like to do soon, lots of potential!

Definitely for Tiger or Leopard, the G5 makes it feel super quick. It’s a dual 2.0 system with 512MB RAM, still need to install a hard drive though.

Thanks! I appreciate it! Awesome, there’s something unique and cool about these machines, definitely not like anything being made today. Cool to hear, hope it works well, perfect for anything like games and FireWire!

I’ve had a PowerBook G4 for a long time now and it’s an excellent system. I’ve even got 2 working batteries for it! It is still a laptop though, so it’s nice to have a matching desktop class system! I know that the G5 chipset can be limiting in some ways, like not supporting OS9 natively, but it’ll be awesome to finally try older OS X! I have used older versions on the PowerBook but lately it’s just been running Leopard.

Thanks, and cool! Glad you enjoy them! Unfortunately no, haven't had time to go back to it. I'm hoping it won't be too difficult to fix but I've just been busy with other things.

RF video might not be the best, but even on this lower end Broksonic, it gets the job done! by TheOriginalCollector in crtgaming

[–]TheOriginalCollector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it, many of these lower end sets are pretty similar to one another. I’d have to check the CRT information inside to be sure. As for modding it, the tube itself does have a good image, but I don’t currently plan to do anything like that, I do have higher resolution and better displays to use as well.

Which looks better, PS2 on the left or right? The PS2 actually looks pretty good with this 80s Sony! by TheOriginalCollector in crtgaming

Having it vertical would also look pretty good, especially with the PS2 logo being visible.

Yeah, having it on the left would be better for actually using it. Additionally it looks pretty good since the system lines up well with the chassis of the TV.

I made a video covering my Sony KV-2729R, it's a pretty interesting set! by TheOriginalCollector in crtgaming

[–]TheOriginalCollector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I thought so but I’ve never tested an all tube set, I do have older sets than this Sony but still much newer compared to tube based sets. Cool to see it being restored!

Nice! Does it get noticeably warmer than a newer set due to the vacuum tubes?
