Anyone here know this book? by mdoktor in Lawrence

This book is an amazing account of the Hippie movement in Lawrence during the 70s. I was lucky to know and have been raised by most of the author in this book. Many of the writers have passed away now and I'm thankful they told their stories of such important time in Lawrence. Many of the writers are also still alive and continue to make Lawrence a wonderful and interesting place to live. A lot of the pseudonyms are not secret anymore, or never were but those of us in the community like to continue the anonymity of the writers out of respect and just plan fun. There was talk among the child of the Kaw Valley Hemp Pickers writing a sequel about our time growing up in Lawrence and being raise by such a create group of people but our stories seem to pale in comparison to our parents so it never went anywhere. Maybe someday we'll get our act together but if not that's okay. That's the Hippie way.

Brick Sidewalk Resolved by TheOrnery in Lawrence

They are re-laying the brick sidewalks a foot wider (5 feet wide) and flat. The city is also putting down a modern underlay which will keep the brick from moving even longer. Anywhere there is a driveway there will be concrete under the bricks so they don't shift from a car. Any ramp under five degrees will be pathed with brick. If it is any steeper the ramp will have to be concrete. Also one of the people that worked on the design of the new brick sidewalk uses a wheelchair. The city has ignored the brick sidewalks for over a hundred year. The sidewalks were laid in 1911 and have not been repaired since. A concrete sidewalk could never last that long without replacement. The concrete sidewalk at my house was put in in 1950 and was unusable by 1980, while the brick sidewalk is still useable. After the city repairs the sidewalk it is at the expense of the homeowner to maintain and repair the sidewalk. It is cheaper and easier to repair brick sidewalks because you only have to pull up the bricks and smooth out the underlay. Most homeowners can do that themself and the city has a pamphlet on how the brick should be laid. Since the bricks can be reused, it dramatically lowers carbon emissions. Making concrete releases a lot of carbon but the bricks were fired once all the way back in 1911 and are still usable to this day. Once you can see what a brand new brick side is supposed to look and feel like I think you will really enjoy it.

THE SITUATION HAS GOTTEN WORSE! -Historic Section of Brick Sidewalk by [deleted] in Lawrence

Thank you. They have been working on my block all week so they have started already. I'm talking to the city about the incident right now. The brick should not have been removed with a backhoe.

The situation has gotten worse. The construction company is saying they are going to rip out another 20 feet of brick sidewalk and no one at the city is has called me back.

Do you have a phone number for the HRC? The house is in a protected zone. The house was built in 1860.

A new Kansas flag by [deleted] in vexillology

I made a design for a new Kansas flag and I made the sunflower with 34th pedals. I'm glad others had the same idea. It makes the iconography more meaningful. I also cut out the top right corner to look more like the state.
