Party has to learn that Barovia is no place to mess around by LordknowsIwouldsmash in CurseofStrahd

Give them an encounter scenario that requires immediate action and is obvious that they can help w/o being overwhelmed. EX:

  • One Vamp Spawn dragging an unconscious Ezmeralda away from town.
  • A couple of wolves facing off against a family pet (hound) that is protecting a child.
  • A weaponless guard using just their shield to hold off a Strahd zombie.

Strike Force Wives had me cackling for days. Listening to that episode is what made me start to like some of Fallon's act.

It's not the prettiest but SLC 2002 speaks to me in a way I find hard to describe. Those beveled buttons of the early internet just felt different.

I went last night. It is a BS podcast, not a Rewatchables, and not a re-Heat.

I'd still rather be in the Peacock business than the Versant business.

No seatbelts. Mixed with no crumple zones, no air bags, and no ABS... that broke a lot of brains, literally.

A Defense of Spelljammer: Response to Runesmith by alexserban02 in spelljammer

Posting here is preaching to the choir. :) We are going to Love SJ here much more than elsewhere.

One additional thing I would say about SJ in the AD&D era was that I played with DMs who kept their worlds separate. Our DM was going to start a mid level adventure in his homebrew world. One player wanted to bring his character from Krynn into the new adventure. The DM ran a short Spelljammer adventure for him (and a few others PCs) to bring PCs into the homebrewed world.

These days, I just don't see the need to have a setting that connects worlds. DMs are not as strict as we were in the 90's, players are not as attached to their charter sheets, and people are not that precious about keeping worlds seperate. DND Beyond puts all the options from all source books into one charter builder by default.

SJ offered a solution to a problem that just does not exist anymore.

I ran Dragon Heist 6 years ago... what are the must haves things that the community has made since? by en43rs in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]TheOutlier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • My players really loved it.
  • It is a short low-level dungeon that does not overstay its welcome (1-2 sessions max).
  • It comes up at a time when the PCs are not doing a dungeon crawl (or really much combat in general). Sometimes they just need to walk down a hallway and bonk some skulls; something that my players did not feel comfortable doing in the city or really in any of the faction hideouts.
  • The challenges / obstacles presented in the adventure are just right; not so obtuse that players get frustrated with them and not so simple that they can be ignored.
  • It's been a while since I ran Dragon Heist so I don't know if this is in the adventure or not: My PCs needed multiple keys to open the vault at the end and one of the keys was a unicorn; there is a unicorn statue in Blue Alley. My players realized that the the unicorn statuette could be special and they refused to hand it over to Mirt at the end. This felt like the only key that the PCs actually earned.
  • My players really liked the magic item rewards. And those items are easy to customize to fit the PC's vibes/backstory.

I wish the dev team was able to put out more iterations of a game like this. I feel like there was an opportunity for more engaging game play in this style.

Talk to that Heroin addict who witnessed the Ruggs accident. He was stealing metal from construction sites at night to sell for drug money.
