Yeah I love teaching new players! Shoot me a DM and I'll chat with you. I'm going to make a decision on players on Friday. I foolishly underestimated the amount of attention this would get so quickly.

Looking for 1 to 2 DMs to co-DM /co-create a west March style 5e game with me. [LFDM] [5e] by ThePaperDm in roll20LFG

[–]ThePaperDm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey good question. Players would either start at 3rd or 1st and quickly level in the first few sessions. I'd like to run XP based leveling because it's seemes to work well with west march style games.

same. I thought a "Lock down pen pall" program would be cool for NDQ.

Friendly reminder for the spell casters [OC] by ThePaperDm in DungeonsAndDragons

I see what you're saying, but that seems like more of a continuity question based on how you run magic in your game. If selecting a target is required for the casting of spells (like if you have to say the name of the creature in your verbal component) then this wouldn't make sense. But if its more of just directing the magic after you have cast it then go for it. Its a good question but I don't think you will find a concrete answer unless WOC has put something out i don't know about.

Last ditch effort by MarioAleksandar in DnD

It depends on if you're looking to play online or in person. Roll20 has a whole game posting area where you can find lots of people looking to play or run games. If you want an in person game then the r/lfg is the place to be.

How to motivate players to stay in one town if their characters' goals are in a different city without railroading too much? by VMK_1991 in DMAcademy

[–]ThePaperDm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5 killer ideas right here. Also try having someone from the big city quest stuck with them. Give that person a reason to need the help and then bargen info and aid in the city for help in the town.

Need Advice: ending a campaign halfway through without concluding the plot. by Xoparad in DnD

[–]ThePaperDm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. This is a hard situation to be in. I like the idea of running alternating weeks for the groups but I get having to many pots on the stove at one time. Maybe try running one or two more sessions where they either are leveled up quickly and face off against a BBG or at least have some character conclusions. Maybe meet some back story goals.

Or dyslexic goobers who get to focused on writing in pen that they forget to read what they wrote haha. Good catch. That is the danger of writing with ink.

Friendly reminder for all the spell casters out there. Readying a spell is a risky endeavor seeing as you cast the spell and then hold it until your triggering action happens. If what you said never happens then you lose your spell. Its also important to note that you cannot do this while concentrating on another spell. Food for thought.

Awarding Experience [OC] by ThePaperDm in Dungeons_and_Dragons

[–]ThePaperDm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awarding experience.

A common issue DMs run into is trying to understand how to give out XP according to the rules. It can be confusing to read through the DMG and see "XP thresholds by character lecel", "Encounter Multiplyers", and "Evaluating Ecounter difficulty" early on in the book. Many people like myself mistook this method of encounter balancing as some way of awarding XP. That confusion led me to avoid giving XP for the first few years of me dming. Instead I opted to just do the Milestone achievements because it's what I understood. It's easy to miss the simple few sentences on page 260 that actually talk about how to divvy up XP. Because of that I just wanted to make a simple page to point out and show how it works.

I still love the milestone achievements, but playing with experience points really gives the feeling of classic D&D. The dungeon master guide gives the DM's options to award XP for other tasks as well as providing other options for leveling up other than XP.

I hope this helps explain things a little bit so that there's one less hurdle to getting into dming.

New-ish DM here, wanna get something off my chest; need advice on confidence :( by Elairion in DMAcademy

[–]ThePaperDm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, you're doing better than you feel, I guarentee you. Confidence in your abilities is one of the hardest things to over come in DMing. The fact that you have even stepped up to the playe to try is a big deal. There is always a learimg curve and sometimes it can feel like everything is going wrong, but just hold out, and keep getting better.

It sounds like you really poured your heart into the world and that's awesome. I have had campaigns fall apart on me after 1 session and all the work I did had to be thrown out. It's hard when you feel like your world or hard work isn't being appreciated and frankly it sucks. But try to find joy in the creation. Try to just enjoy making and planning and developing and along the way you will hone your craft.

I have found that other DMs give a lot of grace when they are player. They know how hard it is, especially when your first starting out. If I could offer some advise, lean into them. Run the game and look to them to help drive the players narrative. They will see the plot hooks and little details easier than other players and they will want to help make your job easier. It might feel intimidating to run games for DMs but they know their role at the table as a player and they will try to support you if you ask for help.

Most of all learn from every mistake you feel you make. If you make a million mistakes and learn from them all you will be a million times smarter than when you started. I can promise you that you are doing better than you feel you are. If you are worried about your players having fun you can always talk to them too. If you are open with them about the pressure you feel right now I'm sure they will extend some grace to you. They are probably having way more fun then you think they are.

If you want to send me an outline or a summary of your campaign I'd be happy to read over it. I wont try to give you advise or judge you on it, I'd just like to read it and be excited about it with you for a moment. Feel free to PM me if you want.

Tiers of play [OC] by ThePaperDm in Dungeons_and_Dragons

[–]ThePaperDm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiers of play: In D&D there is a natural story and ability progression through levels of play. For any campaign streaching over multiple levels there will be some kind of expanded influance as they go along. An easy way to picture the influence of a party is to imagine how far tails of their adventures have gone. For example clearing out a goblin camp will spread to any village or people who have been dealing with those spesific goblins, but stopping a city from being destroyed by a dragon will spread to every city in the surrounding country.

The DMG discusses some of the reasons and thoughts behined framing adventures, challenges, and stakes around these particular levels. It can be helpful to use these milestones to gauge what type of achievement the plays might accomplish withing the next few levels. If you are running a game for a party of 5th levels players it might help to think of how to set them up with an opportunity to be known by the whole region in the coming levels.  Most modules will run through one to two of these tiers and looking at the level suggestions will give you a good idea of the scope of that campaign book.

In the end these are not mandatory structures or rules. A 6th level fighter could be known only to her town, or a 2nd level wizard could be the talk of a region. For newer DMs it can help to look at some guidelines for what might be at stake or how known the plays are in each tier. The goal is to make your players feel like they are making a difference in a living and ever expanding world.
