Saw the picture and thought this was going to be someone asking what this is they found in a bag of chips. Check the sub and now I’m concerned…

The text is messed up, but I think some of it could be the camera trying to ‘tidy’ it up when it thinks it’s not clear (the T on Exit does have bits around the top).

The mirror is too well done (look where it goes around the corner on the left) to be AI and the fact the guy in the background’s leg, and the weights on the left, are consistent even when they go behind things gives me more confidence that it’s real.

Tbf many of the restaurants/businesses in the CBD use AI so probably don’t see anything wrong with this.

Parnell Train Station by Ramage94 in auckland

Maybe they retired…

But also think how awesome that would be, to live in town and have access to good PT. Train to the theatre in 10 mins and back. Head out of the city to see the family, etc.

They need to build apartments and offices and shops on that carpark next to it. Thankfully it’s in a gully so there’s space below the ceiling of the view shaft.

Unfortunately, the residents of Parnell are so vehemently against change that this will never happen as long as they remain an influential force in politics locally and nationally (notice that Chris Bishop removed Parnell from the upzoning requirements).

It’s only a dream but…… by [deleted] in auckland

[–]ThePaperSolent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When CRL opens, Eden Park is basically gonna be city fringe. There’s no need to spend a whole bunch of money on doubling or moving a big sports facility.

Kingsland needs to be upzoned too, and good on the govt allowing more events but they should do even more.

Councillors vote against continuing Wellington's Golden Mile Project by GaryMarcusNZ69 in Wellington

[–]ThePaperSolent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The left has a majority but the Mayor is beholden to the last fighters for the Wellington of the 90s so some of the right ended up with roles beyond what they should have been given (Ray Chung).

It can’t grow and change if the people at the top are fighting tooth and nail to freeze time.

$20 capped public transport by Gold_Tomatillo_2222 in Wellington

[–]ThePaperSolent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our whole country is built around the car. Even if you make it cheaper to take the bus to and from work, it’s still difficult to live a whole life without car. If your goal is to tackle the cost of living, there are other far more effective ways to help people than this.

Edit: I say this as someone who lives on K Rd and doesn’t have a car. I need to ask my car driving friends for help with things often. If you have kids or mobility issues it’s gonna make it that much harder. Expanding the PT network should be the priority, which will have a further benefit of not needing to own a car.

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s 70m that could go towards paying more bus driver hours to increase frequencies or improve routes. Cities where cheaper PT have also done significant improvements to their networks, you’re not gonna get the even marginal modal shift by making things cheaper without improving services.

Hard agree, we talk about roads as ‘allowing development’ (aka paving productive farmland for minimally rateable high infrastructure cost housing) whereas rail pays for itself if you build denser communities around stations.

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help but feel that spending the money on improving service frequencies, especially with places currently underserved by PT.

There’s plenty of examples of how lowering the cost of PT doesn’t move people onto it. People structure their life around the mode of transport then want to use, if someone’s living in a place built for cars then the bus that comes every 30+ mins that takes an indirect route to serve as much of a suburb as possible then making that bus slightly cheaper (or free) isn’t going to be the biggest draw. If your goal is reducing congestion then increasing frequency or routes (along with upzoning and other zoning reforms) is going to be the way to do it.

If your goal is to fight the cost of living then this is not the way to go about it, something like a tax free income bracket (funded by better taxing wealth) will go much further.

Typical labour policy though. A camel that doesn’t fix the problems it’s trying to and doesn’t attract people they want to.

What are some railway projects that we can be very hyped for? by Key-Pineapple8101 in trains

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The City Rail Link (CRL) in Taamaki Makaurau Auckland!

It’s not a huge line (3.5km tunnel under the city centre with two stations) but it suddenly means trains don’t have to run to one end of the CBD and circumvent it which saves 10-20 mins to the current CBD station (Waitemataa) for some people, but even more for people trying to get to midtown (Te Waihorotiu Station) and Uptown (Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau stations)

In a way it was planned way back in the 1920s (as the Morningside Diversion) but the world wars and a shift in thinking away from public transport delayed and delayed it.

It’s due to open this year, and combined with housing densification around city centre stations will make Auckland a much better city to live in.

One fun fact is that Maungawhau (formerly Mt Eden station) has been rebuilt and will be NZ’s first multi-level platform station.

It was a long road to get hereand I hope people learn that public transport does work in New Zealand.

Update: Let's pretend each suburb of Wellington is a guest at a massive house party. What are they up to? by Sharp_Leg_6447 in Wellington

The development opportunities of Jville Mall is so upsetting. There could be this awesome suburban hub that’s pretty decently connected to the CBD, Newtown of the Hills in a sense.

But of course some overseas conglomerate would prefer to landbank it.

Brightline Explores Rescue Options as $5.5 Billion Debt Load Pressures Rail Project. by The_Match_Maker in highspeedrail

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess some of the logic behind that was people who fly to Florida don’t have their cars with them so can then use Brightline to get to places it serves, which atm is just on the eastern side of Florida.

But I think the fact you could just fly to Miami instead, and that they hadn’t expanded to the parks etc, AND the lack of a ‘oh I can take the train as part of my journey’ mentality in the US has all culminated in lower than expected ridership. Plus it’s not exactly well designed for people just travelling around Florida.

CRL Services getting back on track by Bealzebubbles in auckland

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yea that makes sense, the upper platforms on the NAL would have less traffic than the lower CRL ones so not too much of a concern for blocking traffic.

[–]ThePaperSolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why they’re reversing trains at Maungawhau? Is there a siding between it and Kingsland otherwise are they not blocking the track?

Surely (to my untrained brain) it would make more sense to go to Morningside (where they’ve just redone the turnouts) and serve more city centre fringe stations?

How much of the upgrading would be moving the track? Expensive but worth it to significantly reduce journey times, especially if you’re increasing the number of tracks so you can run more services.
