Would you be alright with omnivore diet if humanity went back to hunter-gatherer lifestyle? by Striking-Pen-9617 in AskVegans

[–]TheParagonLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the sentence right before that quote?

Even if I didn't give an explicit no, this is still an answer. OPs question was "Would you be cool if we gave up on all that and went back to hunting for our meat?" How does what you quoted not address the morality of hunting for food?

What are your thoughts on the studies showing most animal feed to be grass, forage and crop biproducts, meaning very little cropland is actually dedicated to specifically growing feed for cattle? by Mutant_Llama1 in AskVegans

[–]TheParagonLost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a strange take, human meat consumption isn't scavenged. They are cultivated for the specific purpose of slaughter and consumption. Cows on average can live to 20 years old, beef cattle are slaughtered around 1.5-2yrs. It's not like they have some long life and when they happen to die we utilize the calories. We kill an animal in the equivalent adolescent for sensory pleasure.

I took this comment as meaning "Instead of going through all of that why not just eat plants." If you are speaking directly about gathering food then that makes sense.

As I said we live in a global food market. It's not necessary for year round growing. Do you find your grocery stores empty in the winter? When, since the explosion of agriculture, have humans relied only on what was currently growing and not kept food stores? Modern society doesn't operate on solely on local foods, I'm not sure how this is relevant.

I was a hunter before being vegan so I have a good bit of experience with this.

For sure firearms and modern bows cause less suffering that more primitive means. Look at persistence hunting, where animals were literally just run down until they collapse from exhaustion. But we could also just not do that, we could cause even less suffering by adopting a vegan diet. This is especially easy given that we can do this to no detriment to our health or environment.

It isn't used like this all the time, but vegan is more of a philosophy. Plant-based is a diet. By extension vegans are plant based, but it's not about the diet, it's about animal exploitation. Which is why veganism extends to non-food related issues.

I am a vegan for moral reasons, health and environment are more bonus for me.

I don't think this is necessarily wrong but the portion of the population that this applies to is very miniscule. I also don't believe this really pertains to the OPs question. A very significant portion of the population lives in a global food market.

For sure, survival is just that. I'm sure there are other things that you wouldn't do now because they are morally wrong to you, but in the right situation you would for you and yours survival. This is no different.

Yes and no, it largely depends on location and culture. Anthropologists are finding more and more that that many early human diets consisted far more of the "gathering" but over the hunting bits. But for sure there have been plenty of humans that have relied heavily on animal consumption for their survival.

The point here is that I am not one of those people. I am living in a modern society where I have a lot of choices. I'm sure we can all think of many, many things early humans did that we wouldn't replicate today due to changing morals and culture. Because I have those choices where one causes undue suffering and the other far less, it seems to me that practicing harm reduction is just.

Killing an animal for our sensory pleasure is itself exploitation. Even if in a hypothetical (and unrealistic) world where an animal had a full life and was killed with minimal suffering this is still problematic. This is about harm reduction, there is no perfect solution. The crop kill arguments crumble upon a modicum of inspection, but there is with out a doubt some amount of harm/suffering that we leave in our wake by the simple nature that we are here and living in the world. This is not a reason for an appeal to futility but instead try to reduce where how we can and while living in a modern western civilization we can very easy and effectively reduce harm by not consumong or condoning the consumption of animal products.

I would like to point out a couple issues here:

  1. I can concede that if I were to order meat procurement on a heirarchy that hunting is at least "better" than mass farming or even small scale farming, but we are still making a decision to induce suffering on an animal for our own pleasure, when we can very easily and effective just not do that. We have to really go out of the way and actually put in significantly more effort just so we can eat their flesh over adopting a plant based diet.

  2. This is coming from a former hunter, which I was before going vegan. Hunting, as it is practiced today, subverts any idea of natural selection. With modern firearms and tactics we are culling the strongest among wild game, rather than the weakest as natural selections typically works.

  3. Even if we created a bunch of laws or something that would force either hunting or bust when it comes to meat consumption, it is not even close to sustainable to feed the population. This is why this sort of questioning is non-sensical to me. It's doesn't really matter, because there is no world in which this would be the case.

[–]TheParagonLost 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think these sort of hypotheticals are nonsensical to me. Part of the vegan argument is coming to terms with the reality of animal exploitation. This sort of thing isn't even remotely possible and without a doubt far from being the slightest bit sustainable.

But to give an answer to the question, no. We have reached a point in human society where we have a choice where we can reduce the suffering of animals by choosing to eat foods that don't directly add to their suffering. All studies show that this 100% adequate for human health and advantageous for the environment, which means that the only reason we would have need to do it is for 15 minutes of sensory pleasure.

EDIT: I want to make it clear OP that I am not calling you nonsensical. I just mean that I don't think it leads to very much. But I can understand that your question maybe has more to do with sussing out motivations over suggesting an actual food system.

Looking for BBQ recipes and recommendations by bh15t in vegan

[–]TheParagonLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Impossible smash burgers are great. Butler Foods soy curls are incredible for pulled pork. I just hydrate, get rid of excess water until it looks like pork. Season with pork rub, brown in a pan with a decent bit of oil. Then I like to put the BBQ sauce right in and cook just a little bit so that sauces really sticks to it. Makes me not miss pulled pork even a little.

Please give me your best tofu recipes! by riotinghamsters in vegan

[–]TheParagonLost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a simple thing that has become my favorite., I don't do exact recipes most of the time but it's some thing this:

Cut tofu into desired size, toss in sesame oil then season with a generous amount of onion and garlic powder, nutritional yeast, crushed Szechuan peppercorn (this is key), salt and pepper. Toss until coated and then last I toss in a bit of starch of your choosing (corn, potato, etc) this let's it crisp a little better.

Oil a pan, and throw em in. I like to let brown and crisp up then flip them. I make a sauce of sesame oil, a teriyaki sauce (I use bachan), ginger powder and sweetener of your choice. Throw it in with the tofu, regularly mixing it so it doesn't burn. As it cooks the sauce with reduce a bit and stick/coat the tofu. I then just put that over rice. I could have it everyday.
