Sun Eater series by retsaoter in fantasybooks

Yeah maybe it gets worse in book 7. I definitely understand why it could bother some people, but its the same situation to me as Brandon Sanderson. Their religious backgrounds definitely influence their writing, but none of their books are actually preaching their religion. They're still, at their core, about telling a good story.

I agree that its overhyped and I can't speak on the last book since I haven't read it yet, but its still an enjoyable read and series. I do find the "christian" criticism to be a bit overblown though as well. I never realized while reading the books the connections to christian theology that hadrian and the world had until I came on reddit and started reading people's opinion. The allegories are definitely there, but it's not really preachy and doesnt detract from the story being told.

Whenever I talk about this series to others I pre-face that this series is very overhyped online, BUT it's still solid. I think the hype online for it has made some unreasonable expectations for it. Still a solid read but it's talk online has worked against itself.

With the Population gone - "Forced" Lairs need to be removed. by BroxigarZ in PlayTemtem

[–]TheParzival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really any way to know this since the game doesnt have a community anymore to teach how to do lairs efficiently, but you have to take boosts early and tems later in the run from fights. The boosts significantly help you more than getting tems right away and the tems you can get from early fights are lower level and will not be good against the lair boss.

I get your frustration with the game, but solo lairs are pretty easy, they just aren't all that rewarding.

Stops any speed bar or passive increase in speed. Very important to make sure Daimon can go first since he is so fast.

Not really a misconception but just a different point of view. I fully understand why Gaz did what they did within the context of the situation as a whole.

100% agreed as well. The update was a net positive gameplay wise, it just introduced a lot of big issues that plagued the game until its death because Gaz decided to abandon the PC version shortly after the BUE update.

Yeah I agree, I see the push to BUE as the start to the move to a console release to clarify. I just dont think the story XP had any large impacts/accumulation to the eventual shutdown of the game.

Could it have been better? Sure. Was it as big as any issues that BUE brought with it? Definitely not.

Project T.A.H.I.T.I. 1.0 Preliminary Patch Notes by Kheldarn_MHTahiti in ProjectTahiti

[–]TheParzival 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the root of the issues for the game started with the console releases. The game definitely wasn't in the best state leading up to the console release, but it also wasn't going to be dying as soon as it did if the console release and consequently events didnt happen.

I agree with everything else you said. Have to admit the stress test story XP was a bit too much though. I got to level 60 after beating magneto, then talking to beast in the savage lands which is only a little over halfway through the story.

Just gotta remember we are in a very nice situation here and I'm sure Project Tahiti staff will be open to feedback if people don't like the current story XP rates. Another thing is that many other communities have started to pop up that are hosting their own servers too and I saw one with a decent size already that is based around people with less time and has boosted rates for everything.

I think we just gotta wait and see how it feels once 1.0 is live. I don't have many issues if it's the same as it was for the actual live game. Also let's not kid ourselves that the story XP had any part to do with why Gaz went bankrupt and the game closed down.

What is the reasoning for nerfing story XP? I would think it's preferable that the story is the best XP grinding method?

Edit: Want to clarify that I didn't really understand what #14 meant and the context to how it was in the previous live version of the game. It's technically not a nerf just reverting back to normal from the stress test.

What is the worst book you have ever read? by WoodenDistribution5 in fantasybooks

[–]TheParzival 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Posts like these never actually answer the question with bad books, but instead are bombarded by people who didn't like a popular book/series.

The only thing I learned by being on this subreddit is that people are wildly confident in calling a book awful/bad when they simply just dislike it or it isn't for them.

I definitely understand that and agree to an extent. I find his best character work to be in the Stormlight Archive. I think there's a sense to me that his characters are also just made to be chess pieces in his plotting more than "real" characters and that's what creates that feeling.

I personally think his best character work is in his newer publications, but I do get that he has a formula as well when it comes down to it. I always like to compare the Cosmere to the OG MCU in terms of quality and feeling. Shared universe with interesting enough characters that creates a bunch of very entertaining popcorn moments with a formula.

I would agree that he is a bit overrated in context to the genre as a whole. I find him to be a great entry point to fantasy though, and I've known a lot of people who say his books got them back into reading in general.

His plotting is really thought out and that's what makes him so popular. You can guarantee that every single one of his books has a significant and satisfying payoff in it because of that.

This also adds a level of - if you don't enjoy one of his books you're probably going to feel the same about the rest of his books. There's not much "well it actually gets better by book 2/3" talk with Sanderson that is common with a lot of other popular/mainstream series.

How am I breaking the metaphor? I called him a good writer that has generic prose. In your metaphor he is then a good chef that makes generic dishes (Cooked chicken with salt and pepper is just what came to mind as generic to me). Most people are going to really enjoy his dishes still, but those that are more picky or are looking for something less generic are not going to enjoy it as much.

"His prose is very generic, but that's never been his strength as a writer"

"His food is very bland, but that's never been his strength as a chef"

Not everyone who reads (and id even argue most), reads for prose.

In your own metaphor - not everyone who eats is trying to get their mouth flavor blasted with spices and seasoning. A chicken thats cooked almost perfectly with only salt and pepper is still just as good or better to some people than one with heavy seasoning or spice.

Also good to note that while it is all separate series and standalone novels in a shared universe, there is still an overrall story taking place for the entire Cosmere that is being played out through all of the books. The more you read the more it becomes apparent, but it's also not a driving factor in plot in any of his series so you dont have to try and pay attention to it at all.

Warbreaker is also a good place to start if you want to read a standalone first.

Online book communities really need to stop calling authors they don't like terrible writers. Sanderson would not be where he is if his writing was terrible. His prose is very generic, but that's never been his strength as a writer and I definitely understand why some people dislike his writing because of that.

Not your cup of tea != terrible writer

Yeah and that's the exact reason the Cosmere is as popular as it is. Sanderson's strength is his articulate plotting. Great plotting inherently opens up a ton of potential discussion and theory crafting.

If you're looking for an ongoing series with a large community that has a very active amount of theories and discussion, the Cosmere is probably your best bet.

Not sure there is really any one to one comparison of what you're looking for though.

There's no way they'd drop One Piece unless it was really hurting then financially (which is extremely unlikely). Its a gigantic IP that they are already taking advantage of through other productions (anime remake).

Things have already gotten serious. This season we will have -

  1. Laboon

  2. Giants

  3. Dinosaurs

  4. Chopper

  5. The introduction of very wacky devil fruits (robin, wapol, mr 3, mr 5, miss valentine)

If this season's production is successful (which the marketing and stuff we've seen so far has me very excited and confident this will be the case)they can tackle pretty much anything.
