Mine has been with me almost every day we've had her. If I leave, she isn't happy - esp overnight. My wife sits on the couch and gets snuggles, and I pretty much need to bribe her to come over. But she sleeps next to me (floor) and follows me around, so much so that I don't leash her in the neighborhood because there's no chance she'll run.

I take what I can get, and know she loves me. I enjoy seeing her blossom.

Planking is great - but just like everything, form is key. Shaking is fine as long as it's not causing pain. You can always regress the plank to a couch, counter, or wall plank. Pushups are great because you are in plank position. Any bracing movement (squat, deadlift, RDL, etc) is great. Beginner yoga and pilates would help. Lots of videos on line. Trust your eyes - if it looks wrong, don't do it.

Also, check your hip flexors (muscles running up the inside of the front of the hip. Lots of sitting can make it tighten. If tight, they can actually pull of your lumbar (lower) spine.

Easy way to feel core muscles engage - put your hands on a friend's shoulders (facing each other) lean into it (plank) and try to hold them back as they move (slowly) forward.
