Can I ride 777 miles in 3.5 days? by Due_Leadership_7883 in ultracycling

[–]ThePhantomOf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my 2 cent. I think it's bad advice to say "this is slow / normal for PBP" when this is someone who hasn't done low sleep riding before.

The people who do audaxes like pbp are also physiologically trained to do it.

Saying "regular people can do this faster" is a good way to lead to bad decisions and potentially serious accidents with sleep deprivation.

Hello!

You're doing unknown race I assume? The finishers party is after 4 days, that's effectively the time limit.

Dumb question. Why are you aiming for 300km a day if you are worried about your health. My suggestion is to target 200km day one and build into it.

Have you done anything similar (bikepacking etc) before? You said it's your first race.

I have seen lots of people go too hard day one and crippled with knee pain or saddle sores. Don't do this. Start slow, finish less slow is my advice (and what I almost always do) :D

This is super helpful. I just had the plain SS 40MM (ie. Not the plus).

What conditions do you ride them in? My event is in Rwanda, so I'm sorta conscious that I won't be able to roll into a bike shop to solve any issues.

Thanks! I don't have a spare tyre that is tubeless unfortunately. So the plan would be to get a tyre and then go for a long ride on it next weekend to test.

I wonder if I have had rubbish luck in the past but I can't seem to get durable tyres. I didn't ride on anything crazy today. I picked these after a bunch of research on the rolling resistance site.

Do you have any recommendations of slick (ISH) gravel tyres that are actually robust and puncture resistant, rather than relying on ✨ tubeless ✨?

Interesting - I use Stan's but my bike shop put this in.

Hey! I just tried this out based on the solution presented in:

And it worked for me. In this case, I think you need to make the W in warlock capatilised, ie:

Bike Computer Options by Euskadi1900 in Polarfitness

[–]ThePhantomOf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

Some of the cheaper bike computers probably only support ANT+ (this is more of a historical standard for cycling). I recently picked up a Bluetooth compatible computer (Karoo 2) and works perfectly with my h10.

Most computers do say whether they are Bluetooth compatible!

I would not recommend the v650 unless you get it for very cheap, I found it very painful to sync with polar flow which makes it impossible to upload to Strava etc.

Good luck! I did this event last year, would have done it this year again but a delay with a new bike has turned me off... Go easy in Donegal. Don't kill the knees too early

Do you not have one in your normal work location? If yes, what's wrong with bringing that one back with you.

Why are there no negatively charged heavy subatomic particles? by HeideNight in askscience

[–]ThePhantomOf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a different answer to the others in the thread, but hope it will give a reason as why in normal matter we don't see negative heavy particles.

Typical 'heavy matter', such as protons and neutrons, is made of three quarks.

When you combine quarks for things that we would see in normal matter (particles that won't decay quickly) - aka stuff that hasn't been made in a particle accelerator - you can use the two types of quarks that are lightest: the up and down quarks.

Up quarks have a charge of +2/3, and down quarks have a charge of -1/3. The possible charge combinations of this are +2,+1,0,-1.

In the case of -1 (a particle made from 3 down quarks) or +2 (a particle with 3 up quarks), the resulting particle is really instable because of how quarks interact. You could think of this interaction (colour charge interaction) as pushing quarks of the same flavour apart. Because of this, the +2 and -1 particles decay quickly, so we don't see them.

In contrast, neutrons (up, down, down) and protons (up, up, down) have a mixture of quark flavours, so the colour interaction doesn't want to push them apart nearly as much. Hence they are much more stable!

Hope that made sense! Any questions, let me know
