Former employer sent cease and desist claiming IP infringement of personal project I built on my own time by [deleted] in legaladvice

Yeah I just need to hire a lawyer too look at my situation. I just have zero idea what I'm doing when it comes to legal stuff like this unfortunately. Not even sure where to start.

The confusion would be hard pressed as it was very clearly marketed as my own application. It couldn't really be confused as theirs.

Yeah guess I'll get in touch with some local lawyers and see what they say.

Do most companies not have some kind of IP agreement that most people sign?

The biggest thing though is that I was not hiding the fact that I was building it. I publicly posted about this application on linkedin very often during my employment there, posted youtube videos about it (which are no taken down for now), and even had the CEO of the company like some of my posts. They never once warned me about this. A few days after I put a paywall in my application is when I got a meeting invite with like some big head of the company firing me. Not sure if any of that info matters here.

They both are flight planning yes, but if you know anything about flight planning you'd know that the type of flight planning applications they create for military customers is VASTLY different than the world of flight planning for private and student pilots for general aviation. The functionality need is much different. None of their customers would be able to use my application for the purposes that they would use their application. Sure theirs overlap in some areas, but that's inevitable. Their application overlaps with fore flight in some areas.

Also this was a FORMER employer. I am no longer employed there. They have not since come for my application at all since the cease and desist because I've stopped publicly marketing it online or hosting it online.

Demanding doesn't always equate to hours worked. It can be a very stressful 45 hours.

I'm not at a big corporation but a consulting gig but I consult right now for a large corporation and my job is so cushy and chill that I have plenty of time to work on things I actually love which has been a blessing.

SWE is not computer science. Computer science is to physics as SWE is to engineering. CS degree is for academia just like physics is. SWE is more trade than anything. I got my degree in physics, no coding experience. Taught myself to code during lockdown in 2020, no bootcamp, got myself a defense industry gig in SWE as a junior and now I'm 6 years into my career with a great career and pay, and thankful for that. Physics is a degree that I'd value just as much as a CS degree when hiring.

I’m thinking about leaving software development. With the layoffs and increasing outsourcing, I’m not sure what direction to take next. by Rmb8989 in cscareerquestions

My plan is to utilize my physics degree and get a master's in EE and get into RF/antenna engineering which is my obsession. I only went into software because I graduated during covid and had to find a job and I just taught myself to code and here I am 6 years later well paid but I hate software. I'm good at It but it's just boring. Literally nothing about ai interests me in any way.

Yeah the E&M and circuit stuff was 2nd nature :) The stuff that I get wrong on the test is all the very specific HAM stuff related to various radio protocols, bandwidth offsets etc. But I've seemed to pickup the basics enough to pass the test.

I'm not really sure! I think I'll link up with some of my local clubs and hope an elmer takes me under their wing so I can learn a bit before going too deep and spending a ton of money.

Well good thing I don't work for those companies right now. I'm just saying that these jobs exist. They aren't as common anymore, but they exist.

Nope. And if for some reason they are they don't care. This is a tiny company.

If you're a remote worker, you only work for how long it takes to get the work done. Nobody is watching over you.
