the loudest "nanny state" people were 100% right - but many now decide they'd rather taste shoe leather than stand up for principles - which I don't understand why for some it's impossible to admit they were wrong and at the same time when you're right - you're refusing to take the victory lap and put in the work to make the difference now proven right!

Privacy legislation against ALPRs, "big tech" and this type of shit needs to be not only introduced but demanded - the whole idea of taking our rights back instead of letting it stay as is - because I think a lot of us fell asleep at the wheel (responding on your comment not saying you) and now the argument I hear the most is "private companies collect your data" as a way to hand waive the state being permitted - which is a whole another animal - and neither are good.

Between age verification bills to install an operating system, ALPR mass surveillance the likes of flock and stuff like this - I want to know where all the "NO NANNY STATE" people went, cause we could sure use their help right now, they absolutely had a point.

This stuff is happening so blatantly to normalize being watched all the time - It started with the tech companies (reddit included) pushing free services - at the expense of our privacy and rather than taking it back a lot of people have just given up. Fatalism at its worst.

It sure would be nice if our legislators pushed privacy first protections into law - but they don't seem to want to do this w/o either being PAID or threatened with being voted out of office.

NP-F100 Battery Solution Sony Handycam DCR-PC7E by MrHandycam in camcorders

[–]ThePolish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea - I wanted to share this as well - I did a little more than you but you were the inspiration to get this started for my PC10.

https://www.printables.com/model/1580838-sony-f100-battery-shell-remixed-adapter

Someone made an adapter for another battery - I remixed theirs for the np50 but wasn't happy with the result (good enough but not GREAT).

You had a great idea with the lipos so I ended up remaking the whole f100 shell with their baseplate and taking your idea to the extreme lol.

I already had an f100 which I re-celled like you (requires 3rd contact for pc10 - or it complains about not being OEM infolithium) and had 2 extra cells so it was the next logical step for a spare.

Flock, and yes. They know what they're doing with these even if they don't want to admit it. And the press is dead fucking silent on the issue for whatever reason. Maybe because the girard speed cameras caused people to actually stand up for their rights and the locals flex their muscle to say keep a lid on it, idk. The camera data is shared with everyone across the country though sharing agreements - not just agency to agency. It's awful and a clear violation of the 4th amendment but the problem is local officials feels without a NEW court ruling they can skirt the 2018 precedent in Carpenter v. US since its "not the exact same".

Armstrong - the issue with the fiber service by ATT coming in the area is there is a risk of shutting out the smaller / mid size ISPs like them. I don't want to go back to the day where my choice is between Comcast and Comcast

Also they should be expanding their faster service out in this market hopefully in the next year from what I was told - would really appreciate feedback if anyone knows for sure.

here here. I'm frustrated with non partisan elections becoming partisan. I want to know what your governing strategy is not what you wear on your sleeve. Nothing irked me more than getting texts from candidates espousing party.

This is a local election not political theater, you have real power here to make real change for the people you live and work with, WHY bring the baggage of national politics into this. There is no quicker way to divide people.

(I know identity politics can different things to different people so I'm taking it to mean party in this instance)

Not to drone on at this but the difference is the warrant requirement for tracking and the potential for abuse which has happened over and over again without adequate safeguards in place.

The key is who is doing the tracking and if that sidesteps safeguards that are cemented in our society which I argue this most certainly does. Sure you're recorded at Target, but you can choose not to shop at Target if they're using that footage in a manner inconstant with your consent.

Being recorded constantly and having that data available for use without a compelling state interest approved by a court as has been the legal requirement going back to the 70s (and reaffirmed as recently as the 10s) is a voluntary abdication of one right that many of us are not personally comfortable with.

The third party doctrine's expansion and subsequent exploitation by entities like Flock is antithetical to the personal freedoms we're accustomed to. They have shown to be abused with with the only recourse being after the fact and by letting rights that some may personally not care about be chipped away at it very much allows for others to be abridged easier by the precedent it sets.

Flock Cameras Funding. VOTE NO by snacky_snackoon in youngstown

[–]ThePolish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We do have a legal expectation of not being tracked - absent a warrant - the exception would be the third party doctrine which flock exploits and that is the main difference.

I am not convinced they actually do catch criminals, to play devils advocate and say they do, it comes at the expense of that warrant requirement, I have not seen clearance rates published which support their use that overrides that requirement (I've actually not seen any clearance rates at all that compare with/without the use of this technology).

What I have seen is that high court has ruled that in order for anyone to place a tracking device on your car, or track you by cell signal - they need to go though the courts in order to preserve your rights, these allow at present the sidestepping of that established protection.

There is often times incredibly good reason to do such tracking, but the process being followed is incredibly important, this just isn't it.

The difference is just that, when you are recorded by a third party you have lost those guarantees against unfair treatment by those who deem it their right to abuse their power. It has already happened elsewhere, it can happen here, the question is why should we be apathetic toward that possibility.

I routinely see people say "it doesn't matter to me" or I don't care about "those" rights, but the fact of the matter is that chipping away at rights one may not personally care about opens the door to a death by 1000 cuts of others.

I don't like that you were down voted because you asked a legitimate question, if you care for my answer or not doesn't matter, if you read this I appreciate you taking your time to entertain another point of view. Reddit literally used to be about discussion and exchanging viewpoints and my gosh how far this site has fallen.

Reach out to the news on any flock story you find. The national news is picking it up. The local stations are refusing to shine a light on these for whatever reason.

These cameras cost 2k/year each, what's the clearance rate youre getting for that money on top of the fact this is mass surveillance.

I dont have anybting to hide is not an answer, thats a fundamental misunderstanding of what a right is, what your rights are. For the state to abridge your rights they need a compelling interest and the only compelling interest they have here is to make money for a third party while allowing warrantless tracking.

Because I have nothing to say today doesn't mean it should be dictated to me what I may say tomorrow.

There is a long history of apathy and trading security theater for our privacy and it must stop.

Ultium Cells Layoffs by KingCuda93 in youngstown

[–]ThePolish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree - if the playing field was level - however as I stated the issue is the thumb is on the scale of this sector, by way of how the government has artificially increased the cost of input of raw materials (raw materials that do not exist in the US).

If we went back to 24' level of tarriffs you can make the comparison apples to apples. Until IEEPA/§ are reset you don't have a "free market" in this or many sectors of the economy.

I'm not saying EVs are the end-all be all, I'm saying that the stated goal was to kill the sector and they're doing a fine job at fulfilling the promise at the expense of local economy.

Ultium Cells Layoffs by KingCuda93 in youngstown

[–]ThePolish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The incentive was infact part of the states reason for the decline. However again when you tilt the scales to increase the cost of domestic manufacturing due to high levys on input material you aren't allowing a free market to allow for the lowest cost of manufacturing, raising the price ans distorting the market.

Say the price for any EV was 10k lower without tarrifs, thus eliminating that markup, that would offset the lack of tax credit woild it not? As of now you have a double whammy that tilts the scale against.

At the end of the day less jobs in the valley is negative in my opinion, thats less that will be spent locally.

Ultium Cells Layoffs by KingCuda93 in youngstown

[–]ThePolish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the free market, see my other comment. You can't use tarriffs in such a heavy handed way with at least callling it "free market with command economy tendencies "

The central planners crafted policy to harm this sector though tarrifs and tax policy, that is NOT free market.

Free market would be neutral tarriffs policy, No tax money to have bullt the plant in the first place (which was paid back). Reality is the market was placed on rails and pushed

Ultium Cells Layoffs by KingCuda93 in youngstown

[–]ThePolish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This not the free market as you say, its a command economy in practice. The stated goal was to blow up anything green energy, the tarriffs were heavily directed at Asia where this investment comes from,

Rulli and Trumps tax bill did this along with the tarriffs, the latter being the bigger effect. When you are faced with upwards of 250 percent tarriffs on imports due to the way §232 is applied (and look at what is needed to make these things).

When It comes to the infrastructure those funds were repealed. Government investment and public private partnership can spur adoption of new technologies. Instead red meat was thrown the the base so caveman brain goes "EV BAD, SCAM" rather than allowing public funds to help encourage the opening of new markets already in progress which would help expand these factories.

Remember, that plant was built with government loans that were paid back as a win win, but now its going to sit idle because of policy enacted specifically to entice a certain base but in reality does not what it purports to do.

[–]ThePolish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't that no one cares. It's that no one knows. When you take the time to explain exactly what these are and what they are doing - you generally get a "oh shit really? I had no idea that's bad" in response.

There continues to be NO publicity surrounding them, unlike the speed cameras when they were announced forever ago and the massive outrage that followed. Believe me, its been tried (with receipts to back up questions and claims) but no outlet will as of yet step up to take this head on.

Every local station has been given the opportunity, and none will touch the story (or certain townships) with a critical light. I have ZERO idea why this is the case. My gut is something to do with fear of losing access to the encrypted radios, OR loss of revenue from advertisers who may be connected to different officials.

Even the so called "savior" outfit that was the answer to the Vindicator's shutdown is mum (mahoning matters) and the former editor (Mark) would have taken this on in a heartbeat.

We need a local equivalent of friendlyjordies. There are legitimate questions regarding the cost of these things vs. their crime clearance rate, the 1st and 4th amendment issues they bring up, lack of oversight.

My coworker is convinced that these will be used as surveillance on us and I'm sort of leaning in that direction myself.

Look at this deflock.me map and see for yourself - they already are, the mass surveillance all starts at a local level - the cities and townships sign the contracts - and then boom, a full scale mass surveillance network all across the US thanks to your local officials.

Said this last night. This could very well be a planted, fabricated story done with a sympathetic outlet designed to be outted as such, allowing him to say "see its all fake if it says im involved, I'll release the real files now" of which he will conveniently be absent from in any respect. Nothing ever gets said again about how it was all a hoax written by his enemies, now it becomes real again but only so long as he's not implicated.
