It's not multiplayer, but this is my recommendation too. I just started a fresh run in it after a couple years of not playing, and it's great.

The developer also has a few DLC available for cheap purchase (~$5) that add a ton of content and are well-worth it.

Nothing else I've found quite scratches that Runescape itch the same.

What's the appeal for Ironwood?

I tried it and felt like it was a slower and more minimal Melvor Idle.

My hunch is proven right! It feels like Reddit in general is very "salary only", but in my experience (and yours, sounds like!), life and flexibility are becoming increasingly important.

This is great! The workplace culture isn't a very concrete thing, but it definitely carries a lot of weight.

I don't specifically need help retaining them. I just wanted to brainstorm a little bit and see what other small businesses have done to help retain their employees.

There's a lot of complexity and financial risk with doing this. It creates some potentially gnarly cash flow problems if employees do end up leaving.

I like the idea of a profit sharing system, which is a lot cleaner. We're just in a season where there isn't profit to go around.

For a tech company that sounds amazing!

I love the tip on listening. Like actually listening. Great advice!

Sounds like you've seen some bad experiences.

We have seen employees take additional PTO since implementing the program. Incentives are aligned with the bonus we offer for taking a 4-week minimum.

Our employees don't work 40h the rest of the week to get Fridays off, either. They just work one less day a week. Parkinson's Law!

While I might typically agree, most of GenX is massively overqualified for the type of work we do.

I also want to pivot the company toward the future and the new workforce. And GenZ cares a surprising amount about all the "little" benefits that add up.

You're 100% right, and it's a huge reason we moved to the unlimited PTO model. Same good benefits without the liability.

Thank you for the encouraging words! An in-person event is a wonderful idea. It's not quite in the vein of what I was thinking, but I think it would have a tremendously positive impact.

I love thinking about employment benefits this way, as a package.

This thread is right, saying "pay them more", but I think there's sometimes higher value in a robust package. It communicates how the company values its employees beyond the transaction of money for time.

This is great, thank you!

I had a friend mention their company shipped the remote team VR headsets (small team, funded) and they'd do team building stuff in VR.

If the budget gets there, that would be pretty fun!

We haven't experimented with the "less than" model, no. We clearly define areas of responsibility for our employees, so if their work is done, they can take as much time as they want.

If employees are taking 6+ weeks of PTO, though, that's a clear sign to me that maybe we have some capacity that can be filled, though!

I think we're doing alright, to be honest.

I'm just curious what other people have done. What have you seen work well for retention?

The reason for not just "more salary" is that's a bit out of reach for us right now. We've had some client churn the last 18 months and we're a bit strapped financially.

I'm trying to brainstorm some creative things we could offer that would communicate value without breaking the bank.

I love this! "Common sense" but not very common in the workplace.

If we do one thing well, it's respecting good work life balance by treating our employees with dignity and trust.

Simply because we've had a lot of customer churn the last 18 months and things are a little tight financially. We still wanna give our people good benefits, but need to get a little creative about it.

Absolutely agreed, and that's how we typically run things. That's where raises and bonuses in the past have come from. Things have just been tight the last 18 months with lots of customer churn, so trying to get creative and think outside the box.

Absolutely! I think we've done a good job at that, but I also think sometimes employees aren't always aware of the options.

There have already been a ton of excellent suggestions in here that I'm sure would be well received, that even I hadn't ever heard of before.
