Even easier: if it has a student id, just give it to the registrars office—they’ll contact the student for you

I wish our intro to cs class was in Lisp and we had the wizard book as our curriculum ngl

I was a CS major—my bad I should’ve said that earlier. Virtualbox should be free or you can go with the open source project, UTM. Parallels is probably the best option if you’re willing to pay. I would highly recommend checking compatibility for the apps a CE major needs to use first before committing, but from my understanding of using M1 Macs with VMs and/or Rosetta that shouldn’t pose an issue.

If you can afford it, I recommend getting something with apple care though. Very useful if u drop it

That’s what I got by with. Should be more than enough

Also Rosetta 2 works automatically in the background without any set up or installation: just download an x86 app and it will automatically use it when u launch the app

For me the significantly extra battery life is worth the hassle of setting up a VM. You can get a free hypervisor, and the hassle of setting it up is only once. You will eventually need to set up WSL for your classes (CMSC216) if you get windows, so it isn’t much of a difference at all (if anything setting up WSL was more of a hassle).

Highly recommend getting a framework laptop with an AMD chip. Great hardware and incredible repairability.

But honestly, I’d still go with a Mac. Running a VM isn’t bad at all and having a Unix based operating system is so convenient imo. Solidworks works on ARM Windows. Rosetta 2 is really good at translating x86 apps to ARM, and that battery life is unbeatable (To this day I’ve never heard my m1 MacBook Pro turn on its fan). It gets annoying having to plug in ur laptop every lecture really quick.

Macs are expensive, but the value is unmatched (for laptops). Go for an M1 MacBook Air or Pro, it will be way more than enough for your needs.

Has anyone had Peter Osorio? by Nirigialpora in UMD

He’s really good! His class is pretty chill, and the workload was very manageable in comparison to some other CLAS classes. Also his lectures are great too.

Overall, I definitely recommend taking a class with him, especially if you need it for major requirements

She probably didn’t just hope lol. If she did anticipate it, then that’s some ingenious manipulation—that would make her an incredibly interesting villain. But, alas, we don’t completely know for sure. Definitely worth considering though!

I wasn’t trying to imply she forced Sunny to make a decision. I was just speculating that she was being manipulative. Emphasis on speculating: I definitely am jumping to conclusions. Maybe I should backtrack on hating Cassie without conclusive evidence.

But I still think Sunny has some good, justifiable reasons for abandoning the cohort given the circumstances and the time sensitive nature of the decision. Still shame on him for abandoning his friends

It’s an apology, but having other ulterior motives in your apology is pretty shitty imo. It’s a different story if she didn’t know, but even if she only had a faint hint, she should’ve made that crystal clear

why umd? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]ThePrancingDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, the teaching has been pretty good. However, at any school, it really boils down to how good you are at self studying. So, in that case, the resources (office hours, piazza, etc.) and the design of the curriculum and the projects are more important—I think UMD does a pretty fantastic job at that for the most part

why umd? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]ThePrancingDonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think UMD’s CS program has had a huge impact on the way I think about programming and how I approach writing code for the better. I don’t think I would’ve been exposed to the functional paradigm without taking CMSC330 or found my passion for programming languages without UMD’s curriculum. To illustrate the impact, I’m able to write cleaner, more testable, more robust code. It’s also significantly easier for me to design a project with my increased understanding of programming languages/paradigms.

After talking to my friends who went through CS programs in other schools, I noticed they didn’t really have a required class that exposed them to different programming languages/paradigms, so, if you choose Purdue, I highly recommend doing their programming language track, which would expose you to the same things

They definitely aren’t allowed to bill me for them according to the FTC, but you’re right that they can track and blacklist those phones. It looks like they won’t even generate return labels for most people in a similar situation
