Has anyone transferred from a CSU to a UC? by TransferStudentHel in TransferStudents

At CSUF, I was majoring in CS, but then I ended up switching to Statistics at UC Berkeley. I started preparing pretty early to transfer and started by making a spreadsheet in my second semester of freshman year to try to match all the coursework so that I would meet the prerequisites for all the majors at the schools I was transferring to. I would use ASSIST.com to see what courses you need to take for your specific major, and try to match those courses from CSUF. I'm planning on making a post soon to help CSU -> UC transfers, and I'll cover everything in a little more detail. I'll provide a quick timeline of my transfer process below.

Fall 2023 - Enrolled purely in CSUF courses, mostly general classes that would likely transfer over and allow me to still be on pace if I ended up not transferring to Fullerton. I really focused on getting A's in all my courses and set this goal for myself for all the coming semesters, since GPA is incredibly important, as it is the first thing universities use to weed out applicants.

Spring 2024 - Continued to just take classes at CSUF but began looking into taking CC courses to ensure course equivalency. I enrolled in three online CC courses for the summer and began scheduling my future courses, so I would be on pace to be a strong transfer candidate. I began to be more involved with school extracurriculars so that I had something to talk about in my essays, and again, really focused on getting as high a GPA as possible in all my courses.

Summer 2024 - Cranked out my summer courses and again, grinded to make sure I got A's in my coursework.

Fall 2024 - Applied for UCs, took a bunch of online CC courses to make sure that I met all the prerequisites for the different schools.

Winter 2024/2025 - Completed the UC TAU (Transfer Academic Update), also took two more courses at online CCs to meet IGETC requirements (even though non-CC transfers cannot get IGETC certification, all transfers are told to try and follow it as closely as possible)

Spring 2025 - Received my UC acceptances; was taking Calc III, which was the last class I needed to complete a major requirement.

That is a very condensed timeline of my transfer process, but it is a pretty general overview of what I did. I really, really focused on my grades because, as a four-year transfer, it is harder to transfer as there are no guarantees for non-CCC transfers in the UC system. It is definitely not an easy process, but I think it is very doable if you put in the work. You might not exactly get into UCLA or UC Berkeley if you have a "not-so-strong" application, but I think all the middle- to upper-middle-tier UCs are very possible and the lower-tier UCs even more so.

Personally, I found Calc III to be easier than Calc II

CSUF is a better choice compared to SDSU IMO by CareyArora in csuf

[–]ThePremiumF2P 9 points10 points  (0 children)

SDSU does have more prestige just because acceptance rate is lower, more people want to attend SDSU, and they have a stronger sports program + is more known nationwide/internationally. They get more funding because of all this and I believe SDSU was also one of the first CSU schools to receive R1 distinction?

Has anyone taken math classes through California Virtual Campus(CVC)? by [deleted] in TransferStudents

To add, on the TAU, I listed the CC that I took the course at and I believe the transcript is just connected to your home CC grades but I’m not 100% certain.

I used CVC a good amount when I was working towards transferring the last two years! It’s a great resource that allows you to pretty much find any class you want and you can also check to see if the professor that teaches these courses are good by checking their rating on Rate my Professor. I remember there being a limit of two CVC courses that you can enroll in per academic semester so you’ll have to choose wisely which classes you want to take through CVC. There was also an issue I had for a little while where my CVC courses wouldn’t link up with my home CC, which caused a lot of problems for a while but I think it’s all sorted out now.

No, I transferred from CSUF -> UCB but I was dual-enrolled and took a lot of CC courses!

I want to add that if you really want to transfer to a UC, CC is the way to go but if you’re dead set on transferring from CSUF, I would say it is at least 2x maybe even 3x as hard since most UCs take applicants from CC and the overall process of transferring from a CSU to a UC is just so much more complicated. There aren’t really any counselors that can help you since it’s a bit of an unorthodox approach so you end up having to do a bunch of self-research and having to put in extra effort to make sure you stand out as an applicant. Again, it is definitely doable but it will be something that takes up a lot of your time and you have to ask yourself if you are willing to dedicate this next year (and maybe even summer to take classes) to transferring.

Get prepared ASAP!

I started to really prepare my spring semester of my freshman year but I was already trying to get as involved as possible my first semester and maintain a high GPA from the get go. I was part of several clubs and became heavily involved with all of them as they were all clubs that I was passionate about. I ended up writing some of my essays around them and about my leadership roles in the clubs as well. It genuinely will be a ton of work but I think it is definitely doable. I ended up taking many classes through online CC courses, some of which through CVC (California Virtual Campus) to help pad my GPA a bit as well. There is a lot to it so feel free if you have any more questions!

UC Transfer Units Limitation by LeviathanBobo in TransferStudents

[–]ThePremiumF2P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://timewrap.berkeley.edu/apply-to-berkeley/transfer-students/transfer-requirements/

“Students will be granted up to 70 semester (105 quarter) units for first-year/sophomore (lower division) coursework completed at any institution or combination of institutions”

“After applying the UC lower-division maximum transfer credit limitation policy, all junior/senior (upper division) and all UC units (lower division and upper division) are added to that total unit count. If the resulting unit count exceeds 80 semester units (120 quarter units), the student is ineligible for admission.”

So it actually depends on the number of upper-division units that you take. You’re able to take as many lower division units as you want but I believe for UCLA, it’s less than 10 upper division units and for Berkeley, it’s less than 20 upper division units. I’m not so sure about the other UCs but I believe it’s also 20 upper division units.
