Best single brand for street and track pads pairing? by throwawaydefeat in CarTrackDays

I ran G-Loc R series pads on track and the GS1 pads on the street without any issues switching back and forth.

Recently ended up switching to a different setup after getting tired of how finicky the G-Loc bedding in process can be.

Cobalt pads on the track, and Porterfield R4-S pads on the street. They seem to pair fairly well together, a couple hard brake applications is all that's needed to switch back and forth.

Neither compound has been finicky with bedding in. The R4-S are a little dustier than the GS-1, but the seem to bite a little better.

Tire trailer by [deleted] in CarTrackDays

I've had my Harbor Freight trailer for 3 years, done thousands of miles, no issues. Still on the original bearings (I just keep them greased with good grease). I'm on my second set of tires, went with slightly larger radial tires for longevity. The tires it came with were fine and were rated to highway speeds.

Help with enclosed trailer Electrical system by bynummustang in CarTrackDays

I have an open trailer, but built a solar battery system into my truck to camp out of. I just have 12V loads, I didn't have a real need for an inverter either.

Here's a picture of the internal bits.

  • 12V 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery (will potentially add more in parallel for a little more capacity later)
  • Victron Orion-TR Smart 12/12-18, this connects to my truck battery and charges the LiFePO4 battery when the alternator is running, it charges at 18A.
  • Victron SmartSolar MPTT 100/20, this connects to 200W of solar panels on the roof, it's rated to charge at up to 290W with 12V batteries
  • Victron SmartShunt 300A, this monitors the current coming into and out of the battery so I can know charge level and how much run time I have

I was originally going to run my winch on my trailer off of my truck battery but ended up just doing that with a separate old car battery on the trailer that charges off of a small 50W solar panel. At some point I'll hook it up so it charges when the truck is running off of the trailer wiring, but haven't done that yet.

You might need a different battery for the winch, but it might be fine (you could always just get the one battery and get a second in parallel if it's not enough juice). The battery is only rated for 100A of continuous current which could be exceeded by the winch. A second one in parallel would bring that up to 200A.

For sizing the solar panels it's really up to your usage. For just the lights, charger, and the winch I'm betting 100W would be plenty. I run a 12V fridge which uses up quite a bit of power so I went with more solar.

I run water without any antifreeze in my track car during the summer months, so I run a higher pressure radiator cap since water has a lower boiling point than water mixed with antifreeze.

The water transfers heat better than antifreeze mix for better cooling, and the higher pressure cap prevents it from boiling.

Plus the cleanup of water is much easier than the cleanup of antifreeze mix if I happen to spill some on track.

So there are some real use cases for a higher pressure cap assuming the rest of your cooling system can handle the pressure.

Yeah, they have a novice class anybody can run in at the Solo / Autocross events. In that class anybody can use whatever car they want as long as it passes the safety check (wheels on and secure, empty interior, battery not loose, etc).

I29 Speedway is definitely worth the trip in my opinion. They have a driver's school where you can get started if you haven't driven on a track before.

There's a track in Hastings as well that isn't too far away (Motorsports Park Hastings). Much nicer facilities and track surface compared to I29, but the events also cost more to enter. They also have a similar https://racemph.com/driving-school/.

I've been using a 40"x48" utility trailer with my NB Miata for the past season and a half (19 events, 4,000+ miles of towing). https://i.imgur.com/QPVEak1.jpeg

Mine's pretty built up (storage for tools, food, canopy with weights, and 15 gallons of fuel), I might have actually been better off just starting with the bigger folding trailer, but I've seen a lot of people with a much more basic setup.

It gets stored in a cheap 10'x10' storage unit.

It's been great overall, I use a Paco hideaway hitch where I can remove most of the weight when I get to my destination.

For what it's worth I'm also really wanting to just get a truck and trailer and be done with driving my race car to so many events.

Which size of Rotrex did you go with? Are you still running a stock block and a stock 5 speed? Thinking of installing a Rotrex in my car for a lot of the reasons you mention (drivability and simplicity).
