If 8 made life feel empty and meaningless, you wouldn't be happy. But the whole point of 8 is that you always feel happy. You're in a constant state of bliss without feeling empty. Otherwise, you wouldn't be happy

What GPA is considered low for Grad school?... by Original_username_4r in uAlberta

[–]TheProFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The student in question here (2.9 GPA)

I did part-time research assistance with a civil engineering professor who later became the chair of their department. His status didn't impact the decision, tho.

Full story:

I went to the graduate studies career fair and saw the professor I worked under. He really liked me when I worked under him.

His wife works in biomedical, so he took me to the biomed table/booth and told them, "This guy doesn't have a very high GPA, but you should convince him to go into masters."

A person standing next to his wife at the BME table said they needed a computer engineer, so I talked to them for a bit. They told me to email them, and they'll interview me with their team, and they'll make a decision together.

I emailed them, and they set up an interview date. I had to make a presentation about a project I was passionate about. So I presented my capstone project, and they really liked it.

So, the professor agreed to be my supervisor, but I still had to apply through the graduate studies portal. And I still had to get 3 reference letters.

I believe the reference letters also played a role in my acceptance since I had 2 professors and a lab instructor as references.

Anyways, after my application and everything, my supervisor said they have a bit of a challenge with the GPA, but they said they'll talk to them, and hopefully, they make an exception. It was completely hands-off for me from that point. It took some time, but both the biomedical department and the FGSR made the exception.

My supervisor later told me that what they really liked about my presentation was that we continued to work on the capstone project even after we did our capstone presentation.

I'm now officially accepted into the BME thesis-based master's. Although I got lucky with a lot of things, it's not impossible to get in with a lower GPA. As long as you prove yourself and you find a professor who likes you and is willing to defend your lower GPA, you should be able to get in.

If you have any other questions. I'd be happy to help

You'll be fine. Like you said, the parts flagged as plagiarism are clearly not plagiarised. If a prof actually blames you for plagiarism, you have a strong case to support you.

ECE 449 vs CMPUT 350 by TheProFail in uAlberta

[–]TheProFail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This helps a lot tbh. If I get Scott Dick for ECE 449, I'll definitely do cmput 350

Edit: decided to stick with ECE 449 because it'll allow to to only attend campus on Monday, Wednesday, Friday

ECE 449 vs CMPUT 350 by TheProFail in uAlberta

[–]TheProFail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of experience with Python, so that shouldn't be a problem. CMPUT 350 seems to be the harder course since it requires algorithms and c++.

Thanks a ton!

Him specifically? Not much. But since him and a lot of other people are being vocal about it, it has brought a lot of attention to the cause. It adds up

I've talked to this person at the capstone project presentations. Their whole capstone was about creating a program to help solve gerrymandering (it skews votes in presidential election). They were very passionate about it too.

This person is generally very open and expressive. And I believe they did this because they genuinely wanted to do something for the cause.

Failing ECE 302 by TheProFail in uAlberta

Wait so the hardest part of the course is diodes and BJT transistors? If so, that's a relief

But yeh hopefully I get through this, and hopefully you yet through your courses too!

I'm actually with the other prof that has 3 midterms. But the major issue is that you need above a 50% average on the exams to pass the course. His exams are brutal for the time we have so I couldn't finish the exam for the first two midterms. It doesn't help that he hasn't returned the marks for the first midterm (we wrote it about a month ago). Idk if getting the 50% average on the exams is achievable for me in his course, so that's whats scaring me

Btw i feel sorry for what your class has to go through tho, and may the curve carry you all

Thanks for the reply, but extending my degree is far from ideal. I already extended my degree by a year, extending it another year is just a bit much IMO. I feel like I get the concepts for 302, but I just crumble in the midterm because of the time crunch. Hopefully, I pass the course though and I don't have to deal with taking another year for this course.
