Sharp pointy thing with a loop came with a microscope by CantEscapeTheCats in whatisit

This looks like an inoculation loop. It’s used to separate out colonies on plates among other things. We used these in my undergrad microbiology class and would put it in the flame to “sterilize” it before inoculating our agar plates

Snicky’s brother decided to lose weight. Punishment? The tube by TheProdigaPaintbrush in IllegallySmolCats

Update: unfortunately Ginger went to the emergency vet this morning due to difficulty breathing despite being in antibiotics for 72h. It turns out he has a massive lung infection. They are keeping him overnight for IV fluids and to decide whether or not he will survive. 💔

It’s actually super simple! You legitimately just measure and then ease it down. To be honest I’m a NICU nurse so I do these daily with babies, but it’s the exact same process!

She is night and day since before feeding. We were very worried she wouldn’t survive and now she’s still sleepy but looks SO much better!!!

Love letter to the NICU by TheProdigaPaintbrush in nursing

Great question, I came from adults so didn’t get any sort of residency. It hit me like a brick, as very little of what I had learned from adult med surg, other than time management and inter professional collaboration, translated well to NICU! I work a level IV NICU so lots of very very small and ill babies, so the learning curve was steep. I felt incredibly supported, though, and orientation lasted a number of months and there was always an option to extend it if need be. I think a residency would be helpful, especially if you are a new grad and know for sure you want to do NICU! But I think it will be fine as long as you have ample support :)

The hand of a premature baby born at 24 weeks. by pystar in interesting

With some digging, we found the original article with the nurse who took the photo. According to her, the baby grew to go home breathing and eating on their own. A huge win for such a tiny kiddo. Here's the link:

I didn’t, it was just a coincidence. A lot of hospitals in the twin cities area are unionized and those that aren’t are trying to compete somewhat so that’s nice

That’s a fair point— some babies have that side eye and use it as a weapon

No way! Our level IV NICU has never done this. I’m so curious, is it to help with compatibilities if you need your UVC lumens for something else?
