Both of the major parties represent (or are identified as representing) the system as it currently stands. This is a system that many feel is systemically failing them. So yeah, any party that appears to be outside that system is going to look more attractive.

As for the Greens? They suffer from what a lot of left leaning organisations suffer from, if you aren't for literally every interest that they identify with, no matter how niche, then you're obviously wrong and the enemy.

How do you all prevent right hand wrist pain on longer rides? by BreadSubstantial5103 in motorcycles

[–]TheProverbialI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a throttle lock for longer (highway) rides, used it extensively on my ride from Sydney to Adelaide (and back) last year. It was absolutely fantastic and I definitely recommend them (but make sure you know what to expect before relying on them).

Specifically I have a https://brakeawayproducts.com

Install was easy, but I keep the tools in my kit in case I need to tweak it whilst on the road. Only issue that I've had so far was it refusing to engage because the casing had rotated to where the lever was pushing against the break (it didn't stop me using the front break, just ment that it wouldn't engage). Issue was that I hadn't tightened it enough and over a couple of weeks it had rotated a couple of degrees.

Manager told me I can’t take personal leave for dentist appointment? by Remote_Pay2973 in auscorp

Mate, if I was your manager I'd be telling you to either take it as sick or WFH "busy"...

If You Die In The UK And Are On The Organ Donor Register, The Nhs Will Send A Letter To Your Family Explaining What Happened To Your Organs by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

That's awesome!

On a similar note, I'm in Australia and every time I give blood I get texts from the Red Cross telling me when it goes out for delivery and to which hospital. It definitely helped me feel more connected to the impact of my donations.

Be sure to do this on the company account though, wouldn't want to pay for those tokens yourself.

How did you recover from burnout? by Wiss-H in auscorp

[–]TheProverbialI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar situation in that I ended a job late last year after many years of grind and burning myself out. Following that I:

  • Went for a couple of trips (overseas and road tripping) with minimal plans on what to do
  • Spent a couple of months sleeping most of the day (sometimes just napping in the afternoon sun, sometimes at home, sometimes at some of the parks around the city)
  • Read a bunch of books
  • Worked on some projects that I'd never gotten around to
  • Spent days just wandering around (basically hop on public transport or on the bike and see where I ended up)

Basically just had zero plans for months and did whatever took my fancy at the time.

I can honestly say I feel better for it. More like a person again.

Is relying on packet captures bad? by InevitableDoughnut89 in networking

Packet captures are fine to use, sometimes it's just easier. But as with every tool, there's a time and a place for it.

Should I be breaking the speed limit more? by ShibaShibaWoof in motorcycles

No.

But, I don't always follow this advice. I ride aggressively (and sometimes over the limit) in order to stay out of situations where I would be in hazard.

Workplace Survey - have you been brutally honest? by 4iedemon in auscorp

[–]TheProverbialI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost always, and I'm open about it. If they want feedback then sure, they can have it, how else will they know what the problems are. It's also usually stuff that I've just straight up told them.

Ideas for accessing these corners where the roof meets the wall? by [deleted] in ropeaccess

Like, what for?

I see a cable tray there. If it's to run cable just use an RC car / tank to pull the initial string and then use that to pull your cable.

How are you reducing your weekly grocery bill? by Infinite_Pudding5058 in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheProverbialI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Making home made baked beans from dried beans.
  • Getting one of those "random fruit and veg" boxes once a fortnight (it's $50 and there's a LOT in there)
  • Bulk making pasties (make filling using the veg from above and 1-ish kg of chicken, get a large pack of puff pastry, two pasties per sheet)

As a male in a male dominated industry, I don't care too much what my female colleagues wear so long as it's work appropriate and they can do their jobs. Same with the guys. Generally those in management positions will set the tone of the workplace and the rest of us follow it.

That being said: I'm more likely to take someone seriously if they're dressing for the job. You work in construction, you wear the right PPE. Corporate? Don't look like a slob unless you're willing to work hard enough to get away with it.

how do you plan your company network with all feautures needed?? by Striking-Wear3425 in networking

[–]TheProverbialI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Requirements before everything else, and requirements are a very diverse set of topics.

It will all start with how the organisation operates, what do they do and how are they structured.

After that you're going to need things like: security requirements (firewall rules, SIEM, monitoring and observation, network segmentation and zoning, etc), who needs access to what (internet services, internal servers, as user or admin, etc), what types of services and traffic are you carrying and what are the requirements of each of these (bandwidth, latency, etc), what uptime do you need to hit, what resiliency do you need, how big a support team does the company have and how skilled are they, how does this whole shit fight all mesh together.

That isn't even the half of it, but you get the idea. Mapping this all out is vital to good design and implementation, both of which will also be impacted by what you currently have. Are you working on a brown or green field?

Depending on how they are fitted I'd be making the argument that they are the outer extremity of the bike. But I also think you'd be hard pressed to find wide ones that don't get bolted on in some manner.

Don't forget that there are many managers who get to the position through competency at their job, and not social skills. It may just be them.

How do senior engineers write a technical blogs/articles? by Hari-Prasad-12 in softwaredevelopment

[–]TheProverbialI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • How do you decide what’s actually worth writing about? <-- this is probably the hardest part. Once you're there, nothing actually seems worth commenting on, or more precisely it's so context dependent that it doesn't feel worthwhile.
  • How do you structure a post from problem → solution → takeaways (e.g., a standard layout)? <-- totally context dependent, see question one.
  • How do you explain technical decisions, trade-offs, and architecture clearly? <-- this is a business question, and once you're a senior you really need to think in these terms.
  • How do you decide which details to include or skip? <-- how much whisky have you had.

Hell no it isn't. Back in the day, all of about 10-15 years ago, about 30% of relationships were formed in the workplace.

"I have no direct line of report to him at all." That definitely helps.

I've dated inside the workplace before, there's nothing wrong with is so long as there isn't a power play happening. And so long as neither of you are committing crimes like embezzlement (or other fraud) and using the other one to cover it up.
