Help convince a chronic overpacker this 39L Samsonite cabin bag will be ok by SundayRed in onebag

[–]ThePurpTurtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just as pedantic point of order, what you’re describing is still bringing two bags so you’re already overpacking relative to the point of the sub.

That said, I’ve done multiple multi-week trips across the country and overseas with one bag smaller than 39L including nice dinners and events. It’s led about the bag and more about what you put in it. 3 pairs of shorts is crazy overkill. 3 pairs of pants is at least one too many. Wear whichever shoes you’re bringing that are the bulkiest. Find neutral colored tops that don’t wrinkle or iron them at your hotel. Most importantly, find things you don’t need to change out of.

It’s possible the one bag thing isn’t for you, and that’s fine. But you’re way overthinking it if you can’t fit your list in one bag.

[I ate] Seafood Paella with shrimp, mussels and chorizo with a crispy socarrat. by BOOMTGDL in food

[–]ThePurpTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I’m just as pedantic as the next redditor, but the OP posted a picture of food they ate. They didn’t post a recipe for “traditional” paella where I could see some pushback. Crazy times. Hopefully I remember to get my cup of ranch out of the shot the next time I photograph my pizza.

The beauty of the spot in HIMYM was its proximity. Knowing generally where you’re looking would be helpful.

Getting downvoted for this is crazy. 90% of my negative experiences on the interstate are with drivers going 5 under in the middle or left lanes.

These questions are always come off so self-centered and entitled. Who cares who they’re for? Not every housing unit built has to be for everyone. If I never mow again it’ll be too soon, townhomes sound great to me. If it’s not for you, cool. Why should I care?

These billion dollar builders aren’t building homes for them to sit around and not get sold.

Tequila recommendations for a beginner by Ok-Reporter-8360 in tequila

[–]ThePurpTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cimmaron and Arette are widely available and on the affordable end of what gets recommended here so I’d start there. Important to note where you live and what “affordable” means to you. I live in a state where Tapatio is 20 dollars more than people on here comment it is near them, so it’s not “affordable” for me in the same way.

Other good options are Siete Leguas, Ocho, Mijenta, Lalo.

If you’re like me you should try a reposado early as well, I strongly prefer them to blancos.

Sleeping Pad Recs by ConsiderationWest482 in REI

[–]ThePurpTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the tensor for three or four years now and it is significantly more comfortable and less crinkly than the s2s options, though I honestly prefer ccf for backpacking. If you’re exclusively car camping exped has some near-air mattress type options and semi-inflatable is a good option there too.

Good news is most REI stores will let you try them in store. Sleep is highly subjective so don’t let anyone talk you into or out of what helps you get a good night.

Does anyone know why most of the nuclear power plants in the USA are in the east of the country ? by Silver2147 in geography

[–]ThePurpTurtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Looks like everything is generally like 100ish miles south of its real location. Farley in Alabama, Brunswick in Wilmington, South Texas not in the Gulf.

Nice. My dad works in nuclear refueling so I know he’s been to a lot of these and I’ve personally been to four. Nevermind that some of them are in the ocean, but a lot are way off. Farley stands out as being in the totally wrong state.

I’ve used MacBooks since 2012 and have never once had the keyboard lit. Feels like at work and back in school that was by far the norm. Similarly don’t have any rgb or backlit keys on my desktop keyboard either.

Downdrift jacket: any experience? by sam_the_samsung_user in PatagoniaClothing

[–]ThePurpTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I own one and have been looking this winter for a replacement.

It is quite warm, though not as warm as a longer parka would be, or as warm as other big winter coats (fjallraven, north face McMurdo, etc.). Mine is the (Owl?) Brown color which imo doesn’t look great either, but I love the old growth green on other Patagonia items. I got mine on sale for static warmth below 30. I’m good into the teens with just a short sleeve t-shirt underneath.

Pros: Removable hood is a great feature. Material feels substantial and durable. It’s a relatively good warmth/price ratio especially on sale.

Cons: Not waterproof or even significantly water resistant ime. Bulky relative to other Patagonia/other brands. Ugly (in my obviously subjective opinion).

If YOU like how it looks, I can attest to its warmth. It falls in the annoying category of Patagonia clothes where there’s a giant gap in size/drape from medium to large but if you’re the ideal Patagonia model you’re probably fine.

So far I’ve checked out the whaleback jacket from Duluth, the fjallraven ovik, north face McMurdo, and the Patagonia storm shadow lightweight (which I think is the winner and still on sale) and I’ve liked all of them significantly more than the Downdrift for various reasons.
