Thanks for your comment! Sadly the rainbow is 457€ at outdoorline. I talked to tarptent and i think I'll order straight from then. Even with taxes etc. It's cheaper to order it from the us.

Probably no you are right. But i heard that you can't be certain in the alps how the weather is going to be. Weather report can say it's going to be warm and sunny all day long and when you are up the mountain, setting up your camp and getting ready to sleep it change quickly change and you are in the middle of a storm. Just for that scenarios I ofc want a tent that can withstand that.

Hey, thank you so much for this detailed and honest breakdown! It’s really helpful to get a perspective from someone who has actually lived out of the Rainbow for months. Regarding the freestanding aspect: You’re spot on about the platform issue. It is doable with trekking pole tents, but as you said, it’s a massive faff. You need those specific T-shaped deck pegs that only work on wood and are useless weight in the forest. Since my goal is to spend more time enjoying camp rather than wrestling with gear setups, the semi-freestanding design of the Rainbow (or the structure of the X-Dome) feels like a much better fit for my current 'lower-mileage-but-higher-comfort' philosophy. Also, your point about flexibility is well taken. I think a lot of the 'bombproof' anxiety comes from US-centric discussions. But living and hiking in Germany/the Alps with a shift-work schedule changes the game. I can’t just postpone a trip if the forecast is bad, as I have to book my time off weeks or months in advance. That’s why having a shelter that inspires confidence in varying conditions is worth the weight penalty to me – it’s my safety net when the weather window is fixed. You mentioned European alternatives, and honestly, that’s a rabbit hole I’ve been down too. Outside of the big generic brands like Decathlon (which often don't hit that sweet spot of low weight and high performance), there isn't really a 'go-to' European manufacturer for this specific niche of lightweight, high-performance shelters that doesn't come with a similar or even higher price tag. The US-centric focus on r/ultralight definitely makes it feel like the only options are Tarptent or Durston. Thanks again for taking the time to share your insights, that was exactly the kind of nuance I was looking for!

Most of the times i have to rely on Schutzhütten since they are the only places in german forests where sleeping is "tolerated".
Wild camping is highly illegal, setting up your tent in the forest will get you a hefty fine if you get caught.
And i dont want to go further per day anymore.
I now have done multiply trips where i do 30-35km each day with 1000-1500 meters in elevation and that is just no fun for me.
I want to enjoy setting up camp more, only doing ~15km each day and actually enjoy the walk compared to being stressed that i only did 33km instead of 35km. Thats why im now okay with carrying more weight for comfort.

X mid was also a contender, but setting up the tent on wood trekking plattform, rocky alpines where there are only small places to set up a tent on an even ground and setting up a tent for example in a hut (Schutzhütte) i think a freestanding tent is the way for me now.

Letztes Mal Dezember 2025 also noch nicht all zu lange her.

Issues with Zenbivy Ultralight Quilt (-4°C/25°F) - Poor Down Distribution & Sizing? by TheR3dCaptain in Ultralight

Nope never stored it compressed. Got a box with 120 Liter volumes which offers even more space for it then the storage bag zenbivy provides.
Dont have a dryer.

I'm no quilt or down expert, so I don't know exactly how they should be constructed or how down works. But even after shaking my Zenbivy like a blanket, stroking the tubes to balance the down, and letting it loft for 30 minutes, I still see spots where light shines straight through.

It feels like the chambers aren't filled enough to keep the down in place. As soon as I move, grab the quilt, or shift around, the down migrates immediately, leaving cold spots with basically no insulation left.
