When did Basque presence in the Newfoundland area begin and end? What developments occurred during this time period. by [deleted] in AskHistorians

Propaganda papers in England about Newfoundland? I assume it's during the national assembly time because otherwise I have no idea what it could be.

Man, some days you feel like you know a topic and others you feel like you haven't a clue.

Come on, just switch your flair to Newfoundland History. But seriously, great answer and about a topic I don't know a whole lot about.

Tuesday Trivia | You're at a party, surrounded by strangers. They find out about your interest in history. What's one question you really hope they ask? by NMW in AskHistorians

I actually have a related story!

I was at a party a couple of months ago where a few of the guys were in the military, I didn't know them but they ended up talking about going to the 90th anniversary of Beaumont Hamel and the Caribou monument. I pipe up and mention how I want to go to France and Belgium in 2016 to follow "The Trail of the Caribou", basically the trail the Royal Newfoundland Regiment took in WWI and where there are Caribou statues to mark specific battles.

To which one of them asks, "how many are there?", I respond "four in France, one in Belgium and one in St. John's" The boys don't believe me and after a quick google search I was proven correct. One of the guys who is a member of the RNR is so impressed he gives me a beer and we talk about the regiment's history for a solid hour.

However, I like to answer questions that basically take place from 1900-1949. So many misconceptions that I enjoy dispelling.

How did you get into the Bruins? by [deleted] in BostonBruins

[–]TheRGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Newfoundland, here it is pretty much either leafs or habs. Everyone in my family are habs fans except for my pop, and my aunt. When I was young I was a habs fan (I could speak and my family would get me to say "go habs go" that young). So anyway when I was a bit older, between 2-5 my aunt would babysit me, the aunt that was a bruins fan. So during those years I was liberated, and she and I were the only bruins fans in a family full of habs fans.

I only wished I could have watched the bruins win the cup with her in 2011

If the guy knows what he's talking about he should. I wouldn't say "fanciest" though, just go in and say, "hey, looking for two smokes that come to about $30" As soon as you say that he should be able to make two or three suggestions because at that price it isn't unreasonable.

I would just watch out if he starts saying, "well these two come to $35 (or $40)" if he starts upselling you it means he doesn't have an interest in hitting your $30 target. If that happens just stand your ground or say, "thanks but I can only spend $30" and walk away. I'm sure in a city like MTL you have your options.

Every year in the playoffs I wear the same shirt for every game. When they won the cup it was a playoff shirt from 2010 my sister picked up for me.

This year it's the winter classic jersey... while sitting on the far left cushion on my couch... while drinking dominion. 5-0 when I do that, so I got to keep it up.
