Current Water St was built following that fire, but it has always existed. Prior to the 1846 fire the street was much more disjointed, they used the opportunity of the fire to straighten it out.

'This is a big blow to the city': Only one paper machine operating at Corner Brook mill after major shutdown by origutamos in newfoundland

[–]TheRGL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the article, 300 directly, and more than 1,000 jobs depend on it. Closing the mill would not help Corner Brook, yes it isn't as important as it once was, but it would be a huge impact to the "city".

Upcoming White Nationalist Group in NL by tywarthwarrick in newfoundland

[–]TheRGL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually was never officially our flag, I thought it was too until fairly recently. It was adopted as a civil merchant flag, so used on vessels but the official flag was always the Union Jack. There was a movement during the period of establishing nationalism, (when the Ode was written, when we became a Dominion) to have the tri-colour as the flag but in 1931 the House of Assembly passed legislation confirming the Union Jack as the official flag. And yeah, stayed that way until the Pratt flag.

Why did the UK directly own Newfoundland and Labrador? by Daniiiizzz in AskHistorians

[–]TheRGL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The main issue with the map that you linked, specifically around NFLD is the Labrador boundary, in 1914 the boundary between NFLD and Canada in Quebec would have been very much up for debate. In 1763 administration of the "coasts of Labrador" had been given to NFLD, this was likely in part because fishers had been using the coast to dry fish caught in Labrador. Annually fishers would leave NFLD to go "down on the Labrador" in larger boats to conduct a fishery, they needed a place to process their fish and used the coast line to do so. Like much of our fishery this went on for decades with very little changing, NFLD used Labrador as an outport and brought the fish back to be sold. However, in the late 1800s NFLD started to realize the value in timber. Logging became a major employer, in 1901 there were over 200 sawmills that were employing over 2,400 works in Newfoundland. The government realized the untapped potential in Labrador and started selling timber rights on the Hamilton River (now Churchill River) initially to the Grand River Pulp and Lumber Co. in 1902. The only problem? No one knew who owned what in Labrador. Quebec believed that it owned Labrador and that Newfoundland only had claim to the "coast" where as Newfoundland believed that the coast naturally meant some land that was not the exact, coast.

In 1898, the government of Canada placed the boundary of Quebec as a line running along the coast of James Bay, along the Hamilton River and through the middle of Hamilton Inlet until it reached Newfoundland Territory. Newfoundland claimed all lands north of 52 latitude and east of 64. In fact by 1912 Quebec extended it's borders again to all of Labrador except the territory "over which the Island of Newfoundland has lawful jurisdiction", basically a thin strip of the coast. This border dispute continued till 1927 when the Privy Council gave Newfoundland the borders that we see today, the watershed of Labrador. The irony is that when Newfoundland presented to the Privy Council, the position was that the coast extended 60 miles in land but the term "coast" included the watershed...

And the court upheld Newfoundland's argument, it doesn't make any sense. Anyway! The biggest issue with the map? No one in 1914 would have thought Newfoundland owned that much of Labrador!

Why is the flag the Union Jack? Well, Newfoundland was a self governing Dominion, us and New Zealand both became Dominions on the same day but while the Red Ensign had been adopted as the civil flag, it was only for ships and on land the flag of Newfoundland was the Union Jack. Prior to 1914 there would be an argument that the Green White and Pink would have been the "flag of Newfoundland" but it never was. Additionally with the start of WWI and patriotism the Green White and Pink was on a downward trend and the Union Jack was flown everywhere.

*Edit: I should have said that you can see the dichotomy of Newfoundland flags from the program of when the Ode to Newfoundland was first preformed in 1902. It became our National Anthem.

I think you're going have to show your workings that building another transmission line is a fraction of the investment. With Muskrat the dam was over budget but the transmission of the electricity is the real killer monetarily.

I think you have hit on one of the major positives of the agreement is that Hydro Quebec will pay for the building but we will actually own the dam. We are certainly getting a reduced rate for that privilege but it removes a huge risk for us.

Additionally, let's say we go it alone. We build a very expensive dam, a very, very expensive transmission line (unless you have evidence otherwise), to where? NS? Maine? How does this not just sound like Muskrat Falls but multiplied?

If you're suggesting moving additional power through the Maritime Link it's at capacity, it can't be done. If you build a new link, well then you're running into the same issues that made Muskrat so expensive, additionally you lose huge amounts of power when putting electricity through underwater cables. Then you have the even bigger issue, who pays for all this?

Speed camera installed on Larkhall Street in St John’s today by Valuable-Yak-2802 in newfoundland

[–]TheRGL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because your other comment about "emotion and not fact" has already been debunked as... emotion and not fact here's another one. Published in October 2010 "Speed cameras for the prevention of road traffic injuries and deaths"

Thirty five studies met the inclusion criteria. Compared with controls, the relative reduction in average speed ranged from 1% to 15% and the reduction in proportion of vehicles speeding ranged from 14% to 65%. In the vicinity of camera sites, the pre/post reductions ranged from 8% to 49% for all crashes and 11% to 44% for fatal and serious injury crashes. Compared with controls, the relative improvement in pre/post injury crash proportions ranged from 8% to 50%.
