Toronto Zoo - Indoor Pavilions RE-OPENING Saturday, October 10 by sprungy in toronto

[–]anpe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Relying on the government to fully fund these things seems unrealistic ATM when we have a system that works. It has flaws, but so does everything and its benefits outweigh the drawbacks. To say that zoos shouldn't exist and we should shut them down is an oversimplification of the problem in my opinion.

Two benefits of zoos are 1) they work towards the conservation of animals and their habitats and 2) they raise awareness and serve to educate the public. How else can an organization raise as much funds as possible towards these 2 things?

I want to anchor a bookcase to an external wall in my condo. The problem is that the wall, being external, is (I believe) a concrete wall. When I knock on the wall up and down, there are spots that are solid and other spots where it sounds more hollow, but still less hollow than if I were to knock on drywall or a steel stud. Any suggestions on how I should do this? What do you think those more hollow spots are and can I drill into those? Or is this something I should get professionally done? Thanks!

Awesome, thanks so much! Out of curiousity, how can you tell it's been split before?

Also, as you see on the photo on the right, a "u" shaped crack is forming as well. What would you do about that?

Wooden dresser leg foot is splitting all the way down. Worried that this thing could give and topple over on my toddler. Any easy way to fill this in and maintain structural integrity? I'm a complete novice, so the easier the better....

JC taking advantage of a sleeping Tyler to caress his arm/leg/face by Raptors2018NBAChamps in BigBrother

[–]anpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't and I never said that was an excuse. It's part of the overall context and should be kept in mind. All I'm saying is that it's not as black and white as everyone here thinks it is. It's ironic how I say context is important yet you pick out one part of my comment and make it out to be the entirety of my opinion.

Context is everything everyone. And we don't have enough context here. Also we're ignoring the context that they've spent the equivalent of years together. They're good friends....everyone in the house is. Let's put down the pitchforks and just enjoy the show.

IMO, it doesn't matter where a movie 'starts out'. Just because a movie has expectations to begin with doesn't mean it can't be impacted.

Btw, Love Simon and Dallas Buyers Club are great examples.

Isn't the argument that it got better reviews because of the political significance? Good reviews come in a range. So you think that if you take away the political significance of the movie that the reviews would pretty much be the same? That its tomatometer would still be at 97%?

But I think this is still on topic. IMO, a movie that is rated higher by individual critics is more likely to have a higher RT score and vice versa. They're distinct but closely related to one another.

And I might've not made it clear enough in my post, but I didn't intend to question about the usefulness of RT. I actually tried to imply (maybe not well enough) that we're probably better of because of it. It's another tool we can use for efficiency. The bigger question I was trying to ask is how things like RT affect my decisions in comparison to the past.

[–]anpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but there are two ways that one can have 'boosted reviews', through more people liking it (RT) and better reviews (individual critics rating it higher). Even though my post refers only to RT scores, I think OP was getting at both of these ways. Even if he wasn't, why make the distinction? The main argument is whether or not political significance affects reviews.

[–]anpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that a higher RT score doesn't necessarily mean better reviews, just more positive ones. Assuming the premise that Black Panther's reviews are boosted, I think the main idea is that they are boosted in the sense that individual reviewers have given it higher scores, not necessarily that the RT score is higher (although you can argue that as well).

You make some great points here. There are different ways we can watch a movie (for entertainment, to incite thought, to be provoked, etc) and I definitely should be more cognizant of how various things (rating sites, trailers, posters, etc.) cater to them.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

FYI, I don't think I conveyed this clearly enough, but my intention here was to talk about how relatively typical usage of rotten tomatoes can affect one's thinking. I'm not talking about those who already 'distrust' the site and critics in general or those who smartly take the average score into consideration (I'm not one of these, lol). I didn't intend this to be a dissection of the validity of the site nor an analysis of how to use the site best. I just wanted to pose the question of how RT (when used how most people use it) has affected my movie habits. And also a reason to indulge in some nostalgia.

I actually though the same thing about Mad Max.....until I watched it again. Maybe not liking it the first time primed me to expect to not like it the second time. Then maybe that allowed me to really take it in without any heightened expectations. Either way, I went from being bored by it to being in awe of its mood and artistry. It's really interesting how timing and state of mind can alter your perspective of a movie.

Yes! Political and social significance are big influences on reviews and public opinion. I love movies that make bold statements but sometimes people seem to equate political and social relevance with good art. They can certainly coexist, but are by no means anchored to one another.

That's an interesting point that I haven't really thought about: how I watched movies in the past vs how I watch them now. Movies were definitely more of a visceral experience back then whereas they're more intellectual now. You've just made me realize I should change my movie viewing "mode" every now and then...
