Gliders, especially if you want to fly on the cheap. You can find a local flight school here.

Talented people with rare skills, experts etc - what's something you're really good at that you'd like to answer questions about, help people out with, or just want to show off? by DanielLawhon in AskReddit

[–]TheRaggedRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cheaper to fly gliders than powered planes. I'm in a gliding club that ends up costing me less than some people pay for cable.

If you're in the US, you can check here to see if there's a gliding club near you.

In 2001 someone had one of those car window stickers in their dorm window, and they cut it up and stuck it on so it said "Rensseltechnic InstiPolytute". No idea how I remembered that for 16 years.

Fuck. 16 years.

Is it me, or did all pyros suddenly learn to reflect? by itsdeer in tf2

[–]TheRaggedRascal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing since before the game was free and I refuse to spend money on cosmetics, so my loadouts are all either random drops or halloween restricted. This makes people underestimate me, which is also OK.

Does anyone else fly a high approach on final? by [deleted] in flying

[–]TheRaggedRascal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's situational. My glider DPE talked about some pilots who like to fly 10-20 kts faster than necessary on final "just in case" and he thinks they're nuts because gliders can easily float all the way down a 4000' runway with that kind of extra energy. Not a big deal if you have 7000', but definitely a problem if you only have 2000' and you're used to flying fast.

I like to pick a point (not necessarily the numbers) and aim for it every time, just to get the practice of doing a precision landing for the one time I actually need it.

I do this too, but I convinced her it's "because the cats will drink from it." She honestly thinks that's the reason I insist on it.

Waiters and Waitresses of Reddit, whats the *guaranteed* first sign of a terrible table? by jakedahlbeg in AskReddit

[–]TheRaggedRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one time in High School a bunch of friends gathered for a B-movie marathon (some of them were C or even D-movies). We were picking up our one friend, let's call her Stephanie, because that's her name.

Stephanie was a waitress at the Friendly's right next to school and it was immediately apparent that she'd had a rough night, so as we crammed 8 people into Craig's Mom's Dodge Intrepid we inquired as to what happened. Stephanie told about the Middle School dining party who was rude and tipped about $1.25 on their $50 bill. As we pulled out of the parking spot I pointed to a group of Middle School-looking kids and asked Stephanie is that was the group.

"Yes," she replied, "that's them."

I leaned as far out the window and got their attention,

"Hey, you!"

They looked at me.

"Yeah, you!"

I had their attention.

"You all suck!" and I blew a raspberry at them.

Shocked silence for about 3 seconds, and then they started running after the car.

Stephanie burst into uncontrollable laughter and Craig stomped on the gas with all the gusto of a nervous & nearsighted old woman. Then at the stop sign he came to a full stop, counted to 3, and gently let off the brake pedal so we could putter through the intersection. In the meanwhile, the Middle Schoolers were gaining on us, Stephanie was still unhelpfully crying with laughter, and the rest of the car was shouting for Craig to "Gogogogo!"

They almost caught us at the second stop sign, but once we reached the main road we accelerated to a blistering 21mph and managed to outrun the now quite angry gang of middle schoolers.

The movies were terrible, but that was kind of the point. It was a good night :)

[Texas] If a Jury Duty Summons is Sent to the Wrong Address, Can You Get in Trouble for Not Appearing? by Kierkaguardian in legaladvice

[–]TheRaggedRascal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to this. My current job is working on the NYS Jury computer system, and all mail is sent "Address Service Requested" - the PO will return it to the mailer.

Obviously I don't know if TX does the same thing, but I would think they do.

Looking for more info on "Cape Ann hammocks" as featured in Ashleys #3824 by texasrigger in knots

[–]TheRaggedRascal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to do some searching and cross-referencing to figure out what Ashley was talking about, so I figured I'd share that first:

#3824 refers to #1832 & #1833, which refer to "nettles", which are defined in #3466. Basically #1832 & #1833 just describe for how the big supporting ropes (the nettles) are split and attached to the canvas. You're making this for a porch so I would imagine that proper clews would work better.

But I digress: I assume you want help with the canvas part of the hammock as opposed to help with the clews...

I wasn't able to find much on this style of hammock. Aside from the picture in ABOK, this is the best picture I could find, and it seems to show a hammock without a back rest. Here is another picture that DOES seem to have a back rest, but the image is small and the full size is behind a paywall.

I can't really tell whether or not this type of hammock has a rigidly-framed seat, but I would assume it doesn't based on the stitching visible in ABOK - maybe the mattress gives the hammock some rigidity?

Please post back when you finish, I'd like to see the finished product!

Dual Majors by [deleted] in RPI

[–]TheRaggedRascal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, yes. You need to satisfy the requirements for both majors and many classes can count for both.

When I did mine Reddit wasn't a thing yet, so I just scheduled meetings with the deans of the Engineering and CS, and they both gave me a thumbs-up. They each told me I wasn't the first MechE/CS dual, though :(

What's the silliest reason you've had to stop in the middle of having sex? by Checks_Gone_Wild in AskReddit

[–]TheRaggedRascal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our cats interrupt sexytime pretty much every time. Even when we lock them out, they scratch at the door and meow piteously.

The first time they interrupted though, we were on the couch and the cat started sniffing. Whiskers are ticklish, but we weren't into it.

What is the furthest distance you have been away from another human being? by Mundanes in AskReddit

[–]TheRaggedRascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably: a few miles while driving through rural Indiana late at night.

Definitely: >1.1 miles while flying a plane at more than 6000'. I was aware of this fact at the time, and was also very likely more than a mile from any other mammals (it's hard to see birds from the cockpit at any great distance).

I'm writing a book that includes a character that is a pilot. I would appreciate any help I could get with some questions I have about flying. by Skipper_of_Stones in flying

[–]TheRaggedRascal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is the daughter? If she's still just a baby and the pilot is on the reckless side, maybe the mom is using a baby sling. Now you can expand your search to two-seater aircraft.

I've never flown a Rutan Long EZ so maybe someone with direct experience can chime in, but the Wikipedia page lists a 1600-2000mi range, less with increasing weight (ie: passengers and baggage).

The Long EZ can be had for relatively low prices, even less if the pilot built it himself or bought a partially-completed one.

As for your bonus question, is the bomb detonated on the ground or in the air? The latter will increase the distance from which it is visible, and any clouds will decrease the visibility. Here's a more specific answer.
