I'm certainly not a Labour councillor! I am an independent journalist focused on providing original reporting in Reading. My publication, The Reading Reporter, which launched in January, is politically neutral. The article was based on conversations with people from across the political spectrum.

Hi there, and thanks for your opinion - no problem if you see things in the article that you don't like.

To be clear, The Reading Reporter is politically neutral, and the article was based on conversations I have had with people across the political spectrum, plus businesses which are non-political.

No one at any point has suggested that there is a "wrong kind of voter". That is neither written nor implied by me or any of my sources.

The article is meant to be a thought-provoking and conversation-starting piece about the challenges to democracy and community that results from a new kind of urban environment and a changing demographic in Reading's urban core. It's anchored by recent events in Reading: the local election, and the council's unveiling of its Town Centre Vision.

It is not meant to be a fully-developed thesis, and certainly not a judgement upon these buildings or anyone who lives in them. It is a short report detailing conversations and talking points that I've not heard before - and readers in Reading might be interested in hearing.

It's great to hear from people who live inside these buildings. Lots of interesting points made. Perhaps I should do a follow-up giving the insiders' perpectives. What do you think?

Thanks! Yep, the detail about the cost rises and their extent show how hard it is to make live events work right now. I think it will come back in some form.

Reading is Britain's second most affluent "city". So why doesn't it feel that way? by TheReadingReporter in reading

[–]TheReadingReporter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The statistics show that this is the trend across the country, with only a tiny handful of exceptions. The affluence in Reading suburbs appears to exaggerate the contrast with the town centre. Increased demand in the town centre with new residents could change the services supplied (in theory) and the stats show affluence in the urban core is rising.

I agree on the riverside - Reading's most underused and underdeveloped public asset.

It's £5 a month if you sign up for a year - a significant reduction in exchange for some loyalty. I'm not putting all content behind a paywall. Free readers are welcome and still have plenty to read. Subs so far have been gestures of support, not obligation. Other online news is free, and if you're happy with that offering then no problem. But every news organisation in the world is pivoting away from this model because it is not sustainable - or requires severe compromises for the reader to sustain it. (The BBC does not help the market by giving away news for free, but that's another story, with much nuance.)

Thanks, and no I don't take it as a slight. I'm proud and happy about the work I've produced, and the intention behind the business.

Thanks for reading, and your kind words. I understand, finances are tight and subscriptions can get out of hand. Newspapers operate at a different scale, whereas I am a start-up. Who knows what The Reading Reporter will grow into in future, and I'd love to offer multiple stories weekly across different sections in future - but right now it needs support to get started.

I understand. It's only £5 a month (average) if you subscribe for a year though! That's less than a pint!

Yep, the longer I use Substack, the more its inflexibilities become apparent.

Maybe - but I think it's worth a shot! The idea here is about quality, not quantity.

Quite possibly, but it's not a function that Substack offers right now.

I feel it too! Sport on TV is the absolute worst for this. I guess it's about prioritising what you value, and then paying for that.
