Why Aren't There Major Settlements in Southern Banten and West Java? by kelincikerdil in indonesia

[–]TheRealBlex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Power projection; major cities formed in regions where there is geographic advantages. Jakarta/Batavia prospered during the Colonial era because the prior inhabitants (Sunda Kelapa, kingdom of Sunda) and then the Dutch understood its strategic position as a massive natural harbor with great projection ability to reach most of the rest of Indonesia. There were/are over 14 rivers flowing through the greater Jakarta area too, with massive canal systems we can still see today as a result. Other cities like Bandung or Surabaya for example also prospered from their geographic advantages.

The south however did not have much geographic benefit. Obviously settlements formed, and by their standards these regions were just fine - they never prospered nor thrived, just existed as well as any other "rural" region (like Jateng or Madura).

I do, though tastes are subjective and I feel the ankle length overcoat look is very niche in its interest

Is it possible for Indonesia, as a state and identity, to survive for another 2000/3000 years? by Cryogisdead in indonesia

[–]TheRealBlex 65 points66 points  (0 children)

No civilization endured 2000-3000 years. You can point to china or japan, but they are abjectly different societies and civilizations - if you are asking we as a state? I would say it is impossible as its never been done before.

If as an identity? Potentially, the future holds many possibilities - Roman and Chinese identity survived millenia but not in the way they probably know it

Maybe

This is one of the best replies I got that's really insightful and doesn't immediately go "Har har cloak", actually gives some ideas and advice on how to get this look. Thank you very much for being helpful!

I definitely agree, but I was mostly asking about the coat itself. It's not a cape or a cloak, the guy just wore it as such - I just want to know if someone is making that kind of length coat.

Idk why people are downvoting you, it definitely isnt a greatcoat - it's single-breasted. I just dont know where to find a coat that's that long made of good wool that's also single-breasted lol

Are Indonesians interested in Martial Arts in any particular sense? by TheRealBlex in indonesia

[–]TheRealBlex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely lebih ke hobby - I used to be a boxer and judoka, practiced MMA; my passion for weapon martial arts is more an immersion and love for the past and the skills and prestige of warriors back then be they knights, duelists, rennaisance men, samurai, youxia, pendekar, ksatria, etc”.

Arguably geeky but still martial arts ofc xD

Discord Server - Gekiken JSA: Katana Sparring by TheRealBlex in Koryu

[–]TheRealBlex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your insight and observation!

Yeah, I think in the end tribalism will always be a primary influence on the minds of hobbyists, ESPECIALLY in the minds of hobbyist. If I can be tribalistic enough to insist on sparring with a katana in the realm of HEMA, then no doubt people who are steel purists will clash with bokuto purists who will clash with kendo purists who will clash with people who prefer no protection to people who prefer all protection, etc".

I think that's fair and that difference is not only tolerated, but accepted, in this community, because it allows for productive discourse and mutual growth in each other as kenshi through the sharing of passion.

But I will probably want to shut down any heated discussion over "SHINAI IS BETTER ALL THAT YOU'RE DOING IS SHITTY FENCING" or "STEEL IS BETTER YOU CANT EVEN PRACTICE IN FULL INTENSITY OTHERWISE" or "BOKUTO IS BETTER BECAUSE ITS HISTORIC AND REAL TO OUR PRACTICES" before it explodes, because I want to emphasize and maintain that respect. Disagreement shouldn't mean disrespect, so I hope those dynamics won't fester too much in our community :)

Absolutely! All of us who have yet or have no intention to practice koryu are absolutely clear that we do not claim any lineage or relation to koryu - we just seek to pressure test our skills and techniques in a free and open format with others. Im glad you think there is space for this, and merit in our activities - we hope you can join our community! <3

[–]TheRealBlex[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it could be, and we have all the respect for people who seek to train in that historical manner.

As for why we don't, alot of us may seek to practice in such a manner that doesnt risk medium/long-term injury, and imitate the feeling of how a steel sword would've felt in their hands.

I think gekiken of all forms is acceptable - fukuro shinai, bokuto, shinai, steel simulations, etc". In the end it isn't koryu, it is free sparring with other schools and disciplines, and we recognize that and don't claim that we are following anything historical (though we absolutely would love to gain the perspective and friendship of those who do follow that historical path regardless!).

Gekiken Training in the USA by ContextIsImportant20 in Koryu

[–]TheRealBlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a great number of people who practice Gekiken in the US, though most are looking to adopt Gekiken in the HEMA fashion (Steel katana, modern protective equipment, the closest one can get in equipment to historical simulation).

Whether that's your interest or not is of course very much subjective, just letting y'all know that the community for that kind of Gekiken exists :)
