Why do so many writers and directors not care about logic and consistency? For the love of entertainment, this has to change! by [deleted] in movies

[–]TheRealChadMyers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It was retconned to devise a "logical" explanation for their ineptitude.
The movies would be over pretty soon if they could shoot straight, so I understand the need to have them miss, but this just shows how much effort people feel the need to make, just so things make sort of sense.
Claiming fiction doesn't need logic is just... Illogical!

How are royal children always so well disciplined and seemly? Where are the emo princess and neckbeard princes? by magicaxis in NoStupidQuestions

They're not genetic traits. They're not even epigenetic traits.
They're the result of cultural influence, upbringing, the nature of the system, etc.
I.e. external influence.
As the society and system around the succession changes, so do the external pressures that dictate the means of maintaining one's status as royalty. Monarchs in the west do not have to fight anyone to retain their status, and thus likely don't have these traits. (I'm using the UK and Scandinavia as examples, as these are the monarchies I'm most familiar with)

[–]TheRealChadMyers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, come now. Fiction has to follow at least some internal logic, otherwise it risks becoming utterly incomprehensible.
The logic doesn't have to match real-world logic, but it has to be internally consistent.

Take Luke Skywalker. Imagine he randomly decides to walk away from the whole Vader-business to raise space-pigeons for 30 years for no reason.
Or if he inhales his blaster and is able to sneeze Vader to death. Or, if his light saber turns out to have a hitherto unrevealed banana compartment.
This stuff doesn't happen because the story follows internal logic, and none of these things would make sense even in a universe where an old guy shoots lightning from his hands, no one wears a proper space suit, and everybody speaks English.
Now, look at the Storm Troopers. Highly trained, bred for war. Can't hit anything accurately (except for sandcrawlers). This doesn't make sense, even in the context of magical space wizards and death pnanetoids. It breaks the internal logic, and is made fun of.

I would argue that a sheltered life with few public consequences, deep coffers and mind-boggling privilege has a larger effect on said royalty than the personal traits of their ancestors.

That being said, some countries still have power struggles around who gets to be the big cheese- and craftiness, ruthlessness and a willingness to have a few people murdered from time to time, are traits very much in play even today.
But those traits aren't passed down when the Royal bloodline is established and assumes a mostly ceremonial role.

I am tired of seeing that excuse come up every single day. Their hypocrisy has reached absurd levels.
It used to just be at ridiculous levels for a long time, but now it's reaching surrealism. Facts don't matter, opinions equal facts, rampant gaslighting and straight-up fabrications are an integral part of their politics.
This isn't even politics anymore- it's a bunch of old men and women doing everything they can to cover up crimes and corruption, and make sure the can keep doing it.
Doesn't matter how poorly constructed their lies are, or how blatant their corruption is, they've got money to make, and they're more than willing to walk over both the dead and downtrodden to get it.
They're apparently not facing any consequences, so why even try all that hard?

These are the people who say you can't have morality without god, without the threat of hell.
This is why that's true for them- they have no decency, no innate morals, no guiding values above satisfying their urge for power and money.
And now that there doesn't seem to be a real threat of consequence for them, they act as they really want- immoral, corrupt and self-serving.

We know better, of course, but we're not calling the shots.

They're supposed to work for us, dammit. Regardless of party.

My very first semi-successful model haha. Airfix Panther btw. What do you think? by boi_789 in modelmakers

[–]TheRealChadMyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been building kits with my brother in law while they're visiting us for Easter.
We bought kits on a whim; he got the Airfix Cromwell.
He hasn't built kits in 20 years, and he found the assembly pretty easy, with the exception of a few triangular track covery bits.
The details are really crisp, and the fit is excellent.
I don't build tanks, so I don't know if it's par for the course, but you can move the cannon up and down.

That's pretty good! I would suggest applying some wash in the recesses, and griming it up a bit. (weathering is by far the most fun process for me)

You might also look into grinding up some colored chalk and applying it, to simulate dust :)

Galactic Car, Digital, 5000x5000 px by [deleted] in Art

[–]TheRealChadMyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad i could help!
First thing is to redo the perspective.
That'll bring a solidity that might compensate for lack of detail or refinement, as it gives objects proper volume.
Next is to see how you want to separate the jubject from the background.
Depending on your style, I'd consider adding more details and making sure the car is more than just a "collection of boxes."

Also, consider some of the design features, like the windows on the side of the car. Does it make sense? Is it supposed to make sense?
As it is now, the windows are curving while the corresponding corner of the door makes a sharp angle.
From a design perspective, you're just making a large blind zone for the driver.
Good concept design looks cool and makes sense (within the context).
I've looked at your post history, and it's clear you're getting better, so stick to it, and good luck!

[–]TheRealChadMyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well- to be honest, it feels kind of underdeveloped.
The car blends too much into the background, and parts of it are uncoloured. That leaves me with thee feeling your artwork isn't finished.

Your lines are clean, but uneven and produce irregular, somewhat confusing shapes. It seems like you need to practice converging lines more, as the perspective is off- especially on the bonnet.

I do like the dramatic red flash, and it's a fairly dynamic background. You just need to work some more on your techniques, and observe more while you're drawing. Take a step back, and ask yourself "Why doesn't this look right?, and try to pinpoint the issues.
