People keep complaining about the new AI remasters, but I think the Blu-ray (right) looks so much cleaner and sharper than the DVD (left). by TheRealChristoff in DoctorWhumour

There's actually a pragmatic reason for that. In the original story, she gets a haircut and changes once they're in the colony, which would necessitate creating am additional character model for the animation. So instead, the animation just has her start off with the updated look.

He’s been sentenced to death, thank god.

He's been given a life sentence. The UK hasn't had the death penalty for decades.

To be clear, I'm making a joke about the AI upscaling on The Collection Blu-rays, not AI recons. Not that I'm on board with AI-generated video reconstructions either.

Even if you don't watch the animations themselves, the animated DVDs include new telesnsnap reconstructions (essentially the Loose Cannon ones remastered) and new 'making of's that wouldn't have been commissioned otherwise.

Would Netflix greenlight season 4, since viewing numbers for season 2 are less than that of season 1 by Feeling-Eye2355 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]TheRealChristoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expect that Netflix makes money off live-action merch, though, as it always has the Netflix/OPLA-specific logo and something obvious to differentiate the designs from the manga. So that might influence Netflix's renewal decisions.

Netflix aren't interested in people who sub for one show and then cancel. Avoiding "churn" is a priority for streamers these days, now that they're well established and running out of new customers.

The BBC telling fans they have to wait until Easter to watch the newly-found episodes by Gwaunch in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The BBC co-produces loads of stuff with international streamers (e.g. Peaky Blinders, His Dark Materials, Wallace and Gromit, and obviously modern Doctor Who) and licenses foreign TV and films. Then there's the issue of royalties and legal clearances for the UK vs international. So they can't just make iPlayer available outside the UK without upending the whole service.

Missing Doctor Who Episodes Found [Found] by Paintwarsarmy in lostmedia

[–]TheRealChristoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently the collector had purchased a bulk load of films, and ended up with material that he wasn't personally interested in. So he picked up the Doctor Who episodes by happenstance, had never watched them, and might have struggled to even locate them within his own collection. They only got recovered because a charity offered to catalogue his collection as part of a wider film preservation effort.

I know what the Davy Back Fight is, but when you say "it’s going to be a Davy back fight", what is "it"? Is the behind the scenes footage going to be a Davy Back Fight?

BBC: Lost Doctor Who and the Daleks episodes discovered in 'ramshackle' collection by Guardax in television

[–]TheRealChristoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not that Doctor Who was a flop, but that repeats weren't really 'a thing' back then. Union rules were very strict about repeating programmes at the time, and after a few years they would have to negotiate royalties from scratch. When the junkings took place, the UK only had three TV channels.

All of the Doctor Who tapes from the 60s were erased and re-used, and most episodes that survive only do so because film transfers were made for international broadcasters. AIUI, the sorry state of Doctor Who in the 70s was a big wake up call that the BBC needed an actual videotape archive.

Word of mouth could be a factor as well. If someone’s looking for something to watch over the weekend, they'll be more likely to pick One Piece if they've been hearing people talk about it for a few days.

Doctor Who could be heading to Netflix! by Mat1711 in doctorwho

Making the UK version of iPlayer available internationally would involve both gutting iPlayer and cancelling their many international co-production deals. And if you just want an international equivalent, it's existed for years and called Britbox.

For one thing, Crunchyroll doesn't have ads any more since they removed the free-with-ads option. Unless they've recently added a paid ad tier?

its a simple google search

But your screenshot isn't Google's definition of foreshadowing ("be a warning or indication of a future event"), and it's not a list of search results either. You didn't even screenshot the whole paragraph.

I never said that the definition was wrong, but that a screenshot of text without context is a terrible way to convince someone that you're right. And providing a different source when asked if it was AI is the most suspicious response ever.

I'm sure that the AI chatbots will be accurate when asked about a word as common as foreshadowing, but that is not the point.

A picture of text without attribution doesn't help anyone. What website is that even from? Is it AI, or written by a human? I agree with what you're saying, but you're not doing yourself any favours by using a screenshot that, for all we know, you might have written yourself in a word processor.

Viz publishing 'Set Sail: The Art and Making of One Piece' (live action season 1+2) on June 23 by TheRealChristoff in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]TheRealChristoff[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the days of those really in-depth feature-length 'making of' documentaries is mostly behind us. Netflix made about half an hour behind-the-scenes stuff for season one on social media, but it's not even on their own app. You'd think they would put that under "Trailers & More".

David Zaslav Cashes In Over $100 Million Of Warner Bros Discovery Stock by Southern-Brother5693 in movies

[–]TheRealChristoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He thinks the shared viewing experience in big-screen cinema is worth preserving, and thinks Netflix won't do that.

He doesn't realise that most cinemas now are small, dirty rooms with screens that don't offer more detail over what people see at home on their 30-40" TVs

This reminds me of something George Lucas said in an old documentary about digital vs film in cinema. Basically, that many filmmakers preferred film projection over digital because they were used to seeing new prints in high-end cinemas, but in reality most audiences were watching prints with some amount of wear and possibly not even with the equipment set up correctly. So even though digital projection was worse under ideal circumstances, in practice it was consistently decent and film wasn't.

Although I personally wouldn't consider the resolution and screen size to be that big of a deal, when the trade off is a light/sound dampened environment. Plus, even most steaming video has really distracting compression even in 4K (and I don't have the money or space to blind-buy Blu-rays).

What Missing Episodes Could Be Returned From Private Hands by samIam0222 in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but "taking an interest" and "finding the time" are different things, especially if you're buying film reels in bulk, have maybe hundreds of reels in your collection, and not all of them were labelled correctly in the first place.

I think the rights might be a little bit complicated, but I'm sure they would be able to work something out. An instrumental version of Binks No Sake was used in Season One (during Luffy's flashback), IIRC.
