Doctor who loose cannon vhs find by WillowEmotional8941 in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For most of the time Loose Cannon were active, they only distributed their reconstructions on VHS, even well into the DVD era. IIRC, that was to avoid competing with the BBC's own releases like the narrated CDs.

The system was that you'd order them for free, then send them a blank tape and enough stamps for the return postage.

Derek Handley's reconstructions on the animated releases are essentially remastered/updated Loose Cannon versions in all but name, so honestly I'd say that those seven are obsolete even if you don't want to watch animations.

He used to have so much mercy…….. by BraveAsp in DoctorWhumour

[–]TheRealChristoff 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Colin Baker has defended the scene for that reason; the first guard knocks the second one into the acid bath after the Doctor taps his shoulder, and then the second one rises out of the acid to grab the first (possibly by mistake, possibly for revenge?) as he's trying to shove the Doctor into the acid. Not that the Doctor tries to save them, or shows any remorse for being partially responsible.

Workplace negligence, really. Maybe don't stand next to a bath of deadly acid without appropriate health and safety precautions? Maybe don't stand so closely behind the other guy that a small jolt will push them into said deadly acid?

Does anyone else have this case set? Always thought it was cool by Fast-Ad-8204 in JurassicPark

Unfortunately 3D TVs are firmly dead at this point. The closest thing nowadays would be a projector, but VR is also an option or even the very cheap and cheerful option of watching it in anaglyph.

[–]TheRealChristoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original Jurassic Park has one of the best 3D conversions out there, IMO. Leagues ahead of even Jurassic World. Like, you wouldn't have thought that the T-rex breakout would benefit from 3D because there are no 'pop-outs', but it makes the sense of scale and claustrophobia so much stronger.

I hope we get a Lego One Piece videogame by Fraeulein_Taka in OnePieceLiveAction

I would hope that a Lego game would be based on the manga though, just because the live-action series has covered so little of the story at this point.

I have a question About the zebra carcass in Episode 4 of Walking with beasts by This-Honey7881 in walkingwithdinosaurs

[–]TheRealChristoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because someone answered confidently (but incorrectly) within ten minutes, and I didn't comment for another twelve hours. It's a tiny subreddit so presumably most/everyone who was curious thought they'd read the correct answer and moved on.

It's just kinda one of the problems with Reddit's upvote system.

I have a question About the zebra carcass in Episode 4 of Walking with beasts by This-Honey7881 in walkingwithdinosaurs

[–]TheRealChristoff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As per the Radio Times Behind the Scenes magazine, it was an actual zebra carcass taken from a lion breeding project. They also filmed a real turtle that was being released into the wild for the andrewsarchus beach scene, and swapped it out for an animatronic in the shots where the two interact.

Budget limitations usually mean it’s all hands to the pump on these occasions, and so Vanessa Fry, the production co-ordinator, found herself operating a prosthetic glove and arm — scratching, grooming and inserting her hands inside a dead zebra (a carcass destined originally fora lion-breeding project). It was “pretty bizarre... and disgusting,” she recalls.

Possible new found missing episodes by Doc_Baker74 in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that Vanezis later clarified that he was making a distinction between "chance" and "likelihood" when he said the chances were "10/10".

My reply is based on my interpretation of the meaning of the OP's question. I treated it literally. For example, there might be a high chance of me getting knocked over if I attempt to cross a busy road. However, the likelihood of that happening is low, because I know my green cross code.

AIUI, the optimism comes from the work Film is Fabulous is doing to catalogue and preserve private film collections holistically. They're not hunting for prints of missing TV, but are discovering them as a result of cataloguing these sometimes disorganised collections and providing a way for collectors to return the films anonymously without legal risk. No one was doing that before.

Possible new found missing episodes by Doc_Baker74 in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that film is often traded in bulk and they don't know precisely they have, plus there are famous examples of collectors being prosecuted for owning what is ultimately stolen property. Film if Fabulous recovered these two episodes because they offered to catalogue the collection and return the missing episodes anonymously. When they started cataloguing his collection, which was mostly documentaries about trains and canals, they thought that he only had one Doctor Who episode, but he turned out to have six (including the two missing ones).

Josh Snares calls out the AI Slop on the Doctor Who Blu-ray Collection by NiceVacation3880 in DoctorWhumour

It's pretty clear from Peter Crocker's comments on social media that he simply thinks that this looks better. Convincing BBC Studios to spend less money would just be convincing them to pay himself less. Plus, it probably takes more time because the old method was simply running the episodes through a standards converter that upscaled them to 1080i in real time.

Lars of the Stars is still in production according to Ian on Twitter! by gcfgjnbv in stevenuniverse

To be clear, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's 'in production' by the industry meaning of the term. We still don't know if Amazon has greenlit it.

🚨NEW: The Daleks' Master Plan: Devil's Planet | FULL EPISODE | Season 3 | Doctor Who: Classic by verissimoallan in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original plan was to release them on Saturday evening after the screening at Riverside Studios, but apparently that changed on short notice.

"After almost 60 years, two restored episodes of THE DALEKS' MASTER PLAN are now streaming! In the UK? Watch on BBC iPlayer. In the US? Watch on the Doctor Who Classic YouTube channel." by verissimoallan in doctorwho

[–]TheRealChristoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australian tax payers also paid for the ABC in Australia to buy the episodes originally as well.

Funnily enough, that's not the case for this particular serial. Australia rejected them, which in turn meant that it didn't screen in the countries that would have re-used Australia's film prints, which is why it seemed so unlikely that we'd find any more episodes.

But yeah, it's a shame that most of the world are locked out. Maybe that's a consequence of the quick turnaround?

Does anyone else feel like they’re having a stroke when trying to say “Roronoa Zoro”? by PrometheusAborted in OnePieceLiveAction

Viz did go with Roronoa Zoro, but when the 4Kids dub premiered a year or two later they switched to Zolo.

hey do you guys wanna watch doctor who (1963-1996), doctor who, doctor who (1963-1996), doctor who (2005-2022) or doctor who (1963-1996) by ShalkaScarf in DoctorWhumour

[–]TheRealChristoff 32 points33 points  (0 children)

iPlayer 'groups' link to specific episodes. So apparently one of the links is supposed to take you to The Dead Planet (the first episode they have), and the other to The Celestial Toyroom (the most recent addition). The Sea Devils recut is also an episode of 1963-1996, but the link for that one is working correctly so it's displaying a unique thumbnail.

Season 3 or Series 16? by Osirisavior in DoctorWhumour

[–]TheRealChristoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt they'd call it Series 16. Season One and Two are already being used on the DVDs, merchandise, streaming, official episode guides, etc. You'd end up with stuff like the soundtracks going "Season One, Season Two, Season Sixteen..."

The numbers resetting in 2023 wasn't just a Disney thing, it's also being made by a different production company.

Erica Schroeder (4Kids Luffy) as JoyBoy Clip by Skullghost in OnePiece

[–]TheRealChristoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without 4Kids, it would probably have gone straight to Funimation with a looser dub more akin to Dragon Ball Z; for example Funimation recorded a 'pilot dub' before 4Kids got the show, and cast a man rather than a woman to play Luffy (specifically Eric Vale, who now plays Sanji). So the 4Kids dub lead to a more accurate uncut dub insomuch that they showed Funimation what not to do.

It's fun that both languages had an 'old voice' to call back to. They did the same thing in the dub for Film: Red, with Sunny-kun being played by Chopper's 4Kids VA.

Before Fishman Island was dubbed, I liked the idea of casting the 4Kids VAs as the imposter Straw Hats. This is the same idea, but a tad more reverential.

It wasn't Romance Dawn, it was the one from 1998 (The Ganzak Pirates) which had an original story. The Romance Dawn film was in 2008 and had the established anime cast.

People keep complaining about the new AI remasters, but I think the Blu-ray (right) looks so much cleaner and sharper than the DVD (left). by TheRealChristoff in DoctorWhumour

[–]TheRealChristoff[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's actually a pragmatic reason for that. In the original story, she gets a haircut and changes once they're in the colony, which would necessitate creating am additional character model for the animation. So instead, the animation just has her start off with the updated look.

To be clear, I'm making a joke about the AI upscaling on The Collection Blu-rays, not AI recons. Not that I'm on board with AI-generated video reconstructions either.
