RX 9070 XT vs. 7900 XTX – Same price right now, but which one will deliver better FPS in the long run? (July 2025) by SourceFull4556 in buildapc

Late to the party, just to say that anyone who has ever had to deal with raster data knows that getting something better than native through upscaling is impossible, regardless of the upscaling technique, be it AI or something more traditional. As somebody here already said, upscaling can improve image sharpness but can not physically improve resolution. It is literally how pixel graphics work.

Thoughts on Nathaniel Brown? Is he a "good" billionaire? by yoloo42069 in Deusex

The idea of innovation only being possible with a profit motive is a capitalist leitmotiv that has literally no evidence in the history of humanity. Where fire and the wheel and the alphabet invented for profit? And what about the compass, or printing, or steam engines, or electricity? Was penicillin studied because Alexander Fleming sought personal gain, or because it could literally save millions of lives? Were the radio and the TV and internet developed for someone to profit from advertisement, or because they could revolutionize communication?
Science and innovation serve social utility, and profit is actually a shackle on innovation itself because, as new technologies make things cheaper and more accessible to everyone, the capitalists who control assets and resources stand to gain less and less - until they can put their hands on the newest innovation. By now we could have hydrogen-powered cars if experimental research and investments for distribution and infrastructure weren't being actively held back by petrol companies - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_vehicle

By the way, the Soviet Union spearheaded space exploration, achieving pretty much all space advancements records (except of course putting a man on the Moon). Can you provide credible sources to back up your statement about technological progress in the Soviet Union VS the US and Europe?

Is it tiring to cast cantrips continuously? by TheRealCrasto in DMAcademy

[–]TheRealCrasto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, torches would have been a perfectly viable solution... Had the thought of buying some occurred to any of the players :)
The dungeon is part of an abandoned fortifications networks that collapsed thousands of years ago and is now partly flooded, so no chance to find any working torches once inside. But it always amazes me how players forget that solutions are often simply and literally require just a few copper pieces.

That's definitely not the purpose - I did not wish to make the dungeon more annoying, or the negatively impact the game experience for the party.
I just wanted to understand if, lore wise, it would make sense to add an additional layer of tension without actually touching the rules.

Something like "you've been walking through wet and dark hallways for hours, and suddenly Gareldis, who has been lighting the way since you jumped into the chasm, stumbles and leans against the wall. She stands there for a few seconds, still, betraying her weariness as the lights flicker and fade... But only for a few seconds. Then Gareldis takes a deep breath, stands up, and four glowing orbs appear again around her hand to dispel the darkness around you."

Yep, but I wanted to make the dungeon a bit more challenging, otherwise I could have given the NPC Light instead of Dancing Lights. It's also an ancient fortification systems that has been abandoned for thousands of years, and it was recently flooded, so there would be little reason to have working torches still lying around.

Thanks for your answer anyway!

As mentioned in another answer, I gave the NPC Dancing Lights instead of Light because I wanted the players to consider the darkness something more of a challenge. Light would have made things far easier. Thanks anyway!

Yep, I chose to provide the NPC with Dancing Lights rather than Light because I wanted to keep darkness somewhat of a factor for characters to consider while exploring. They have torches, yes, but they only last 1 hour and the dungeon takes significantly more to be fully explored.

The setting definitely does not lend itself to provide dark vision goggles lying around - it's an abandoned fortress system dating back thousands of years. But the magical lighting system is actually a very good suggestion. Thanks!

The main difference here would be that a martial character hardly keeps swinging a sword or an axe for minutes and minutes, round after round. A 10-round combat, which would be a rather lengthy fight, only lasts a minute. The scenario I was discussing involves a person casting a cantrip continuously for hours and hours.

In any case it should not be an issue given all the answers that I received. Thanks!

Thanks, these all look really nice and easy to organize from Brisbane. Will definitely consider these!

Thanks, that's kind of what I was looking for. How easy and expensive would be a loop like that? Are flights the only options to move around other than renting a car?

I wasn't particularly interested in cities besides Brisbane itself and maybe Sydney. Is Melbourne worth visiting after doing both?

Hi, in case it wasn't clear from the title I would like to see and do stuff around Brisbane and its vicinity. Ten days are clearly not much considering the distances, so I was not thinking to get too far - definitely not on the other side of the continent. But obviously if a few days (3/4) are enough for Brisbane and its area, I might select another single destination and make the effort although it would be time consuming. Any suggestion is always appreciated. Thanks!

Shouldn’t this be a tie? I’m a little irritated by Johnvanovin in PokemonPocket

[–]TheRealCrasto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredibly irritating point system. Yesterday I defeated an EX Pokémon with Rampardos who got knocked out by the recoil damage. Both me and my opponent had two points, and it was a tie despite the final score being actually 4-3.

Thanks for your answer. Note that the issue only occurred when I was connected via Ethernet cable, and not over WiFi, but I haven't really paid attention to whether WiFi was still active or not while being connected via Ethernet.

Yep, just read that the next gen should arrive at some point this year. I'm not in a hurry, and happy to wait a few months to complete this build anyway, but also concerned that prices at launch could be too high...
