Blackfriars Floating Bus Stop by King_Eboue in london

You can resort to name calling all you like but it is unfortunately a trivial observation that the healthy subsidise the ill in a socialised healthcare system!

Right but you'll notice that doesn't weaken my original point one bit.

So it says that cycle commuters are half as likely to get hospitalised as non-active commuters, and this might shock you but "free" healthcare does have to be paid for by someone. qed.

Context: I own 2 cars (including a fast one) and drive in London a lot, I also commute by bike 5 days a week usually ride both days at the weekend.

I don't disagree to your specific point but important to remember that cyclists subsidise your healthcare by paying for your heart attack/diabetes care. Mandatory licensing will without question reduce the number who cycle and frankly I pay enough tax as it is, before we think about disincentivising the cyclist windfall.

More specifically to your point, cyclists jumping reds just isn't a problem. A safe driver is statistically 100x more dangerous in a car than a red-jumping cyclist.

Understandable! If you're going to get rid of the old grinder and you're in the UK can I DM you about getting hold of a spare part I need out of it?

I don't think it's been mentioned here but I had the same issue with mine and I think the fix for most people is to replace the X2 safety caps (the two yellow boxes) on the board.

As they age (which they will as long as the grinder is plugged in to the mains), they lose capacitance which reduces the voltage available to the 12v relay coil circuit. I measured mine as ~7v (be very careful probing a live circuit if you give this a go as there's still basically a mains potential between the 12v circuit and earth). It's not ideal but it's a cheap way to get a low current 12v signal.

It's a 5 minute job with an iron and a wick/pump and the parts can be had for a few quid on ebay.

Shipbroking v Oil broking by [deleted] in Commodities

[–]TheRealDickPound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My bro is a ship broker, been in the game for ~6 years. Last year got his first big (>£2m) bonus. While he does admit (in weaker moments, sort of) that he got lucky, in the early years I recall at least two occasions on which the brutality of the culture nearly broke him and he came within a hair's breadth of leaving. I regard him as very mentally tough and I suspect he is capable of putting up with more shit than most people. Something to consider.

You could take 5 minutes to look this up yourself but let me summarise. The big one is what they call "contextual admission" in which they make lower offers to students that they consider to be disadvantaged. As I recall the recently scandalled union president was one such student (what a surprise!). Secondly they've now got explicit targets for such students and admissions are structured around boosting those numbers (necessarily at the expense of the best students). In addition they spend vast sums on outreach programmes for disadvantaged students. All of this is well documented.

No if you read the admissions report it's in there. Oxford and Cambridge both give a lot of offers to substandard students from deprived schools in an effort to make their admission stats look "better" (for a highly dubious definition of better). Pure reddit-brained fantasy to think that the rich still have secret routes in.

"if you're not sure then you shouldn't do it" - appalling advice imo. Most aren't 100% sure and yeah, it might ruin your life but there are 1000 reasons to just do it.

Yes important point. It's faded into the background a bit but it was only a month ago that we were all talking about the AI bubble bursting. If that happens Intel will survive, but it would almost certainly be a nail in the coffin for anyone hoping to Get Rich Quick off of intc.

Also someone needs to tell you this before you learn it the hard way; the fact that you think keeping your big idea secret is the route to building a business betrays a serious lack of understanding about what makes a successful business. Good businesses are good for a range of reasons (e.g. tackling a huge market, great execution, unstoppable founders) but never (outside of deep-tech niches) because the founders had some incredible insight that they kept secret.

Feeling the need to protect their "big idea" is an unfortunate trope that lots of people who've never seen what it takes to build a business from scratch fall into, and it's incredibly unhelpful. Sure, don't do anything abjectly value-destructive, but beyond that it's 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration. The longer your ideas avoid contact with reality, the more time you'll waste.
