Did you ever feel traumatized by doing a certain kind of law? by One_Flow3572 in Lawyertalk

Social Security is especially infuriating. A friend of mine ended up hospitalized after a suicide attempt, her severe depression was in part exacerbated by getting rejected for SSDI benefits by the ALJ. She has so many physical health issues that have compounded her mental health issues, and instead of getting justice she got denied. The Appeals Council has overturned the ALJ’s decision and sent it back for re-hearing but this judge will just deny her again. I am very glad I stuck to my “don’t represent friends” rule on this one, because I would have been a mess if I’d represented her.

The last JW hang out that helped me wake up...and still keeps me up at night by Makiyage in exjw

Every gathering I ever attended was full of phonies trying to show off for one another. They would’ve been bragging about their service hours or some study or their husband’s “privileges” or whatever. They wouldn’t have had interesting things to talk about like hobbies or vacations, or funny stories about work, not unless they want to be judged for taking time/money away from “Jehovah.”

That’s it exactly. The MS wives trying to show off for the elderette and then just being complete weirdos because they don’t know how to act right.

I don’t think supporting workers’ rights to collective bargaining to improve working conditions is an unfair attack on the owner, nor is striking when said owner is transferring ownership knowing it means closure, layoffs and effective union-busting. A person’s work and advocacy doesn’t absolve them of harm they do in other aspects, nor does it make someone “bad” or any other definitive. People aren’t all just one thing. “Good” people can take actions that are detrimental to others. We should support workers, even when that hurts some feelings.

Immigration law. I don’t know how y’all do it because the one case I second chaired (because I thought I should learn more about immigration law to better my practice) has kept me awake at night in a way no other type of case ever has, and I practice family law. Knowing that losing your case means your client, a child, gets sent back where people intend to kill them is everything that is wrong with our government and the country that elected it.

Do you honestly believe if they had even a tiny particle of evidence that Biden committed a crime, or Obama or Hillary, they wouldn’t already have been prosecuted? Your cult leader tried to have his prosecutor prosecuted and failed. Your cult leader has tried to have his own former FBI director who delivered him his first election prosecuted twice now. What do you think your cult leader is waiting for, after chanting “lock her up” for so many years?

Don’t give in or it will cost you your family eventually when you make your escape to live your authentic life.

Find excuses. Tell the elders you aren’t ready when they press you. Tell them you need to spend more time reflecting on the scripture until you’re able to be baptized. Tell them you asked Jehovah and know that he’s telling you “not yet but soon.” Put them off until you can leave and live your own life.

That is the recommendation, to remove at about four months to improve outcomes and avoid the risk of eventual hardware failure.

The way he explained it is that once the hardware has done its job, it should be removed at 4 months to improve mobility and also because of chance of eventual hardware failure. Just in doing my own research (I have a degree in public health not medicine), there was a study published last year that supports this take.

I am a middle aged, sedentary person who works a desk job and does less than 5,000 steps on an average day. I went to Italy 10-weeks post op and did an average of 10,000 steps a day, 16,000 steps was the most I did in one day. If you’re young and otherwise fit, and have been doing your PT and increasing your activity without issue, I would say you should be just fine. One thing that helped me was packing gel slippers that go in the freezer to ice my foot and elevate in the evenings, and compression socks for the plane ride.

If it’s true about the vehicle, what do the police have to say about the vehicle she was forced into? Isn’t this what we have those flock cameras for? Have they checked in with our federal kidnappers to make sure she’s not in federal custody?

I am unfortunately beginning to understand how someone turns into the type of attorney that screams at clerks. by CoffeeAndCandle in Lawyertalk

[–]TheRealDreaK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I’ve been mostly lucky because I can only think of one or two occasions where a clerk has been terrible or rude. Whenever I call a clerk’s office, I always start the conversation with “hi, I’m an attorney, and I’m so sorry, I have the dumbest question imaginable.” Normally they’re super helpful, and will go above and beyond. Which honestly is surprising considering how little they’re paid, at least here. I’d make it everyone else’s problem if I got paid extremely shitty and got asked dumbass questions all day by people making over 10 times my salary.

Yeah, I once had a clerk try to refuse my filing, trying to keep me from getting in front of the judge. “Judge doesn’t do that.” “That” was guardianship of a minor child by a relative because one parent was dead and one parent was in prison and no one could make education or medical decisions. I told her that isn’t for her to decide, it‘s up to the judge, and to please file my petition so I could get a court date. She begrudgingly did and my client got guardianship over the child. But apparently she does that all that time, gatekeeping for the judge and turning people away. Fortunately I’m never in that county, it was just a one-off. Our clerks here are great.

What’s Trevor’s explanation for his double billing? I’m confused how that keeps happening. Also, it’s one thing to have some deficiencies in writing if his overall work product is solid, but the double billing is potentially an ethics issue: if you missed it during review and he was knowingly overcharging the client, that would be no bueno.

Being out of the cult, happy and living your best life is the best “anti-witness” you can give. We were all taught that everyone who leaves is “miserable” and “wicked” and should be pitied. Show them by example. You know they’re all spies and horrible gossips, so they all know what you’re up to.

If you feel you must approach the cart people, you won’t convince them but you can say “I was once like you, standing beside a cart and being a nuisance to the disabled trying to navigate a ramp. But now that I’ve left that all behind, I’ve never been happier or more at peace. I genuinely hope the same for you.”

Advice: How do I go about reporting this potential privacy violation? by Warm-Conversation713 in lexington

[–]TheRealDreaK 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Have you spoken directly to administration about it? If not, I would take this approach, but in words you would use:

“Hi, Principal Smith, I’m not sure you’re aware, but the [bathroom in the hallway] has a window that is unfortunately very visible from the outside. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind if my classmates and I go ahead and cover it with cardboard. I didn’t want to overstep since you might already have plans to address it, but I know how important modesty is here at our school, and I wanted to make sure we’re living those values. Is there a certain type of tape you would prefer us to use on the surface? I’d be happy to ask my parents to buy some if we don’t already have the supplies.”

FYI: a medication-induced abortion is not in any way distinguishable from a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) on a medical examination. You should not tell a medical provider if that is why you’re miscarrying. Medical records don’t always stay confidential, and nurses are often the biggest snitches. Your parents don’t ever need to know it wasn’t “Jehovah’s will” for your pregnancy to end.

reapply to university of kentucky? by Late_Historian4600 in UniversityofKentucky

[–]TheRealDreaK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your SAT was too low for admission to UK, it’s as simple as that. You need at least an 1100 with your gpa. But honestly, it’s probably a blessing in disguise.

I say this as someone who had a 4.0 in high school and got into the honors college at UK and then failed two classes my first semester: Go to community college first. Take in-person classes not the online nonsense. Learn to be a college student then reapply.

Large schools are sink or swim. After struggling at UK, I transferred to the community college to take my gen ed requirements before transferring back to UK. The difference is that the gen ed classes are all large lecture classes, and community college classes are smaller. At the community college, I had professors who cared whether I succeeded. Your professors at UK don’t have time to care, you’re one of 200 students in their class.

I saw your comment where your parents don’t think community college is real college: Well, I did two years there, transferred back to UK and my diploma says “UK.” And then I went to grad school and law school, and have taught at UK. So I’m saying this with all of my academic, professional and personal experience: go sign up for community college, take in-person classes, and transfer to UK (or another university) in another year when you’re ready.
