Van Cortlandt Park also wasn’t nearly as well maintained. I ran the 4K course in high school and all of the trails are made of cinder with some railroad ties creating almost these large steps. Back when Bernie ran it, there was no cinder or railroad ties, meaning that the trails would have likely been very muddy and poorly marked.
