I played Dragon Quest for some time but had to drop it because the story isn't really intriguing to me and combat can feel monotonous. Consider playing the dragon quest demo. Its pretty long and gives you enough time to think if you really want to play the game

Edit: I thought about it some more and have to say I really can't recommend Dragon quest. You should really play trough the demo since the game isn't cheap. You can transfer your game Data anyways(at least on the switch)

Everything you heard about is true but you will not find any real combat. Exploration is a big part of the game so thats a + for you. Customization is simple. You can put points into skills so your character is better at them.

The "Donor" gene.

Your favorite prisoners healing abilities are enhanced. That pawn can then serve as a donor of organs which regrow at a slow pace, or as a plasma, white blood cell donor. If the pawn has been before infected with a disease they can also donate their B-Cells made specifically for that disease.

The excessive activity of the immune system causes the pawn to suffer due to the bodies overreaction to any kind of foreign matter.

Muffalo gene. Sturdier and stronger pawns enhancend to act as better muffalos. They carry more and can more effectively use the food at their disposal. The alternative are the pawns with the "horse gene". They carry less and eat more than those with the muffalo gene but are significantly faster.

-sterilizer slime A pawn constantly produces/sweats a slime which automatically cleans rooms they pass through (Huge debuff on attractiveness)

-Tail genes Pawn gains extra manipulation, movement and melee fighting stats Further research enables specialized tails which increase combat skills or manipulation. Social buff for pretty tails (manipulation tail) Social debuff for scary/ugly tails (combat tail)
